One arrested over attempt to sell local parrot
(CNS): One person has been arrested, and a Grand Cayman parrot has been seized and handed over to a vet after it was listed for sale on various social media platforms. The Department of Environment said they were contacted by concerned residents who had seen posts with pictures of the bird caged up and began an investigation, which has led to an arrest. Although not as critically endangered as the Cayman Brac parrot, the Grand Cayman parrot, our National Bird, remains threatened.
Thanking the conservation officers and the RCIPS, the DoE said they all went above and beyond on this case.
“While the investigation is ongoing, we want to remind the public that poaching, trading and keeping Cayman parrots is illegal under the National Conservation Act,” the DoE said. “Only parrots already registered during the six-month amnesty, which took place in 2018-19, are permitted in captivity.”
Anyone who is offered an unregistered Cayman parrot should call DoE conservation officers on 916-4271. Active poaching or disturbing of wild nests can also be reported to 911.

Just look at that poor creature. What kind of POS would keep a wild animal and allow them to become so sickly?
I wish the person could experience the same sort of captivity in a cage, with crappy food and little care. Experience the same depression. There’s a term for that, but it escapes me. Oh yeah, it’s called prison.
The bird was given an anaesthetic, bathed and treated for parasites. Is it a common practice? Anaesthetic for people and animals is always a risk
Soon to be an ex-parrot, is it nailed to its perch? Looks to me like it’s pining for the fjords.
It certainly appears as though this parrot shall soon cease to be.
lol great add. Very intelligent parrot unlike the seller
Did the parrot type the advert?
What language is that?
What about the other parrot? The person advertised 2 of them for sale. Would be a shame not to rescue the other one also. Thank you to all those who were involved in saving this one from its living hell.
That parrot looks like he hangs out by welly’s.
The amount of local parrots kept in cages in Cayman is sad and sickening. Amnesty in 2018-2019 to register them? Yeah, right. Probably 5% got registered.
Then report the parrots to the DoE. If they’re not registered they can be confiscated.
That’s just crackers.
And some expats assume anyone of color is a Caymanian, and refuse to accept that Jamaicans are expats too.
I thought our civil service did not enforce laws. Some how the courts and the prison are full.
Thanks to our world class civil servants for all that you do. Protect our national bird.
My ex had a pet Cayman parrot called “Pirate” back in the 80’s. Noisiest thing you could imagine – just like my ex. Couldn’t wait to be away from them both.
I remember him.
Glad when he returned home. lol
why would anyone want to keep a bird in a cage?
Ignorance is a hell of a thing.
A fool is a fool even after he dies, he still a dead fool, can’t change.
