Over 60% of recent virus cases unvaccinated

(CNS): More than one third of the new cases of SARS-CoV-2 confirmed last week were fully vaccinated and 3% had received one dose. But 61% of those who contracted the virus during the week of 24-30 October were unvaccinated, according to information released Tuesday by Chief Nursing Officer Dr Hazel Brown.

In the first weekly update from the Public Health Department on trends in COVID-19 data, Dr Brown said there was an average of 131 new cases per day. More than 97% of cases were in the community last week, impacting people of all ages, from a month-old baby to an octogenarian, with 52% of those who contracted the virus being women.

Five babies under the age of one year were among the positive cases, Dr Brown said, but despite the recent surge of the virus through the schools, only 14% of cases last week were in children under 18. Most of the cases are in the workforce, she noted, and the average age for last week’s cases was 34 years old. Only 1% were over the age of 70, as efforts to protect the elderly appear to be working.

Dr Brown said that over the course of last week, four patients with the virus were admitted to hospital with two were discharged. With the figures released yesterday, it appears that since the outbreak on 8 September ten people have been admitted with COVID-19 as of Monday morning, and eight people are currently in hospital.

Dr Brown urged people to continue with personal prevention measures.

“In the context of wide community transmission, Public Health is advising enhanced vigilance in prevention strategies. If you are isolated or quarantined, you may still prevent ongoing transmission if you adhere to the recommendations. Wear your masks, use hand sanitizer and practice physical distancing,” she said.

The COVID-19 vaccination clinics continue at the Lions Centre and Camana Bay locations, as well as district events as advertised on the Health Services Authority and government websites and social media platforms.

Very nice calculation of infection rates among vaxed and unvaxed. That statistitian should not continue in job unless he was forced to do that way.
Even 12 to 16 yr olds are given vax only recently and coverage is not great.
So we should take the total adult cases of this outbreak and see percentage.
Also severity among vaxed adult cases and unvaxed. That helps.

  2. Anonymous says:

Our rate is high because of the cut off for positive is at a higher level of CTs (testining cycles) compared to other countries. So picking up even minute virus presence that may not be capable of spread.
Now numbers are no longer imp.
Just test symptomatics and close contacts, treat as necessary and self responsibility of stay home if tested positive or symptomatic.
Just treat like flu and do what we do in flu season.

I read views on my comments. Forget about Govt ppm or Pact.
    Think logically.
Our infective rate is almost double of USA and many others during peak periods.
So even the double vaxed person from other countries should be concerned to visit cayman now as they will be at increase in risk of getting infected cayman rather they bring in.
The unvaxed adults are negligible in cayman.
So we have to learn to live with Covid rather than just criticising.
    There is nothing to criticise.

    • Anonymous says:

I don’t think we can compare ourselves with the US as they are not doing as much testing, so their figures could in reality easily be double ours.

    • Anonymous says:

Not worried about visiting at all. Been “living and working with covid” since March 2020- triple vaxxed, wear a mask, social distance, wash hands and don’t gather in large groups. Don’t plan on changing just because I am on an island.

    • Anonymous says:

Nope, we are not concerned in the least. This virus is so 2020 I can’t for the life of me understand how CI can gin anymore fear and anxiety out of it.

Get with the times, Wayne went to Scotland! There are Freemasons there, and nothing happens without their approval. My cousin’s baby-mama boyfriend’s sister is married to a Mason and she says the initiation ceremony includes a virus, or a vaccination, or maybe both. Anyway, knowing this is how she got a job she wasn’t qualified to do.

Nothing new here, We’ve known for over 6 mo the internationally that this is a pandemic of the unvaccinated… they catch it more easily, spread it more and are more likely to die. Those are scientific prove facts. You’d have to be mad to be an unvaccinated adult out of choice.

    • Anonymous says:

That is not facts. Please look at world news and try and understand what is happening in the world.

    • Anonymous says:

If it is indeed a ‘fact’ it is a disputed one by academics. I have observed with my own eyes what I call ‘invincible syndrome’. Vaccinated people (yes I am one) that believe they no longer have to worry about covid protocols such as hygiene, social distancing and masking. These people are just as capable of spreading.

The CDC has already warned that we are a few mutations away from a vaccine proof variant but believe the mRNA can be quickly modified. The ‘unvaccinated’ are blamed for this, but it appears the science does not fully support it. You can be your own judge, there are plenty of credible sources to choose from.

    • Anonymous says:

Check your I(s). Ireland, Israel. The vaccine rate could be 100% and it won’t stop and there’s not a credible science based theory left that says it will. Shut up about the unvaccinated, you don’t have a clue what you are talking about.

Just returned from getting my booster at the Lions Center tonight. This is not scientific, but I only saw 2 other people who looked old enough to be booster candidates. Everyone else appeared to first or second jabbers. So hopefully getting more new folks protected. Looked like a pretty decent turn out, at least 50 people waiting for their vax. Very quick and well organized. Bring a pen, and a flat surface to right on if you go; they have some but not a ton. There are chairs for everyone all the way through the process, it is a bit like musical chairs mixed with Mass. Thanks to all involved in getting shots into arms.

Thanks for the update. I went a couple of weeks ago and it wasn’t so well organized and at the time. I would say only 20% were there for their first or second vaccination (many were Jamaican, which I saw as a good sign). It looks like the last two weeks have scared more people into getting vaccinated. Many people on this site are complaining about what they liken to a panicky hysteria, but if it’s driving more people to get vaccinated, then I hope the panicked hysteria continues with the unvaccinated!

    • Anonymous says:

Some of us frontline workers to be jabbed first were young .. nurses, physiotherapists, and such .. I got my second dose in Feb and its now 8 months since then!

Why is a natural virus, infecting people in a community anything other than natural? Why does it need to be linked to a conspiracy theory? Listen to yourselves.
We have come from no covid to community transmission with 80% of our total population vaccinated. We are seeing a rapid rise in cases simply because the virus has an opportunity to grow in a population of people who didn’t go through the same waves of infection that the rest of the world went through. We are seeing rapid growth simply because very few people in Cayman have had it before, but the vaccinations are doing what they need to. Keep the vast majority of people safe. Why is this a conspiracy? It is a natural progression. Let’s stop for with the whole conspiracy theory fantasies for a little bit and think about what is most likely happening rather than what people want to be happening…. to prove their fears right.

@12:36pm – not sure where you got your figures from? In Canada today, there have only been 1,130 new cases reported, not 70k!

      • Anonymous says:

Dude, they said apply our rate to Canada’s population.

So if Canada was experiencing the same level of Covid that we have, they would be getting 70,000 cases a day.

  14. Houston - "We have a problem!" says:

Just to put what we have in context:

    131 cases a day
184.2 cases per 100k of population (Yay! We’re #1 in the World!)

For comparison apply our rate per 100k of population to the following places:

    U.K. – 124k cases a day
    U.S. – 607k cases a day
    Canada – 70k cases a day
    Florida – 39.6k cases a day
    New York City – 15.5k a day
    Jamaica – 5.4k cases a day

I am praying that we have such a high comparative rate because we are testing so many people.

We don’t need to be worried about incoming vaccinated visitors. They need to be worried about our seemingly uncontrolled community spread.

I’m not Houston, but they said:

“apply our rate per 100k of population to the following places:”

So let me break it down for you, if you take Cayman’s rate of 184 cases per day for every 100,000 people and multiply it by the population of the UK divided by 100,000 and you get 124k cases (I used the k here but it means 124,000),

What that tells us is that if the rate of infection we had here last weekend was happening in the United Kingdom, there would be 124k new cases a day there.

All this to put our rate in context which is that we have a lot of cases right now. Fully 3x the worst rate the UK has seen in 2021.

100% right. We are doing 1k tests per day that is far higher than anywhere else in the world given our population.

      • Yeah but.. says:

Our Test Positivity is off the Charts!

437 positive results out of 3,693 PCR tests in the last period.

That is 11.8%, which seems really high given how we are testing people. This was under 0.5% back in September when this outbreak started. I don’t think the style of testing has changed.

The other thing to remember is that these test results are giving us a look at how transmission was happening 1-2 weeks ago.

        • Anonymous says:

      • Sweet baby Jesus says:

No one was commenting/calculating the rate for the UK.

        But FWIW:

UK had 41,299 cases on Nov. 3rd.

        Population is 67,220,000

So 61.4 cases per 100k of population.

The lack of basic numeracy and reading comprehension in Cayman is part of our problem.

So obviously the vaccine is working.

We shall really see the effects on the unvaccinated in 2 weeks, when the surge of hospitalizations happens.

Even the health minister seems to have forgotten about the hospitalization surge that has occurred in every other country 2 weeks after a surge in infections.

We may have 8 people in hospital at present, but remember the number of active cases 2 weeks ago and compare it to new infections now

Please provide us with the percentage of unvaccinated children who fall within the unvaccinated 60%.

    • Anonymous says:

Ok, I went back and read the news story where “Dr Brown said, despite the recent surge of the virus through the schools, only 14% of cases last week were in children under 18.” So we can assume then that 14% of the 61% of the unvaccinated are children. This leaves us with a different set of facts, i.e of the infected adults eligible for the vaccines we have 47% unvaccinated and 53% vaccinated. Interesting.

      • Anonymous says:

Schools were closed for a week, government ones longer. It’s not rocket science. Check again next week.

      • Anonymous says:

Why does this matter? An unvaccinated positive is the same no matter what the age in terms of numbers. It seems like you are just trying to find a way to justify being unvaccinated even though you know that you are more likely to catch covid. And if you catch it you can spread it.

      • Anonymous says:

Not good at math are we? 14 + 47 + 39 (not 53)= 100. The fact there are four to one vax to unvax shows that being vaccinated works.

So We have 131 per day of 70000 population.
I.e. 750000 per day in USA . We know in peak period USA had 3.5 lakh cases per day . That means we are getting about double. Probably due to more testing as our sick rate is very minimal compared to USA.
    Let us be practical.
Vaccination does help in curtailing transmission to some extent but not fully. So vaccinated and unvaccinated can transmit but morbidity is minimal among vaxed.
Already more than 90 percent of eligible got vaxed.
With 131 per day local transmission quarantine of incoming vaxed and covid negative pts is waste of time and energy. They should be more concerned than us as many untested asymtomativ corona positives may be in our pop.
So let us not be panic.
This is even milder than common cold and flu.

Better keep schools closed for 4 wks until current outbreak subsides and urge parents to keep children at home as that is the purpose of school closer. This is because they are unvaxed.

I think better for unvaxed are not allowed in public places super markets restaurents bars etc. Unvaxed families can be helped with grocery pick up if needed for next 4 wks.

The vaxed working to practice social dist ‘mask and sanitize and all precautions as per flu.
A few will be sick and can be treated like in the past with pneumonia.

No need for public health to follow up each case. Rather self isolation is good even not tested if any symptoms.if symptoms go to doc.

No need to trace contacts. But if any contact is worried either use lft or go to health care settings.

Soon December and Christmas parties. We all should take personal resp and behave. Govt cant control behaviour.

We are lucky as this hit us after we had 90 percent of eligible got vaxed.

We should be thankful for what we have than complaining.

This was expected once introduced. One day it has to be. Many of us have gone to USA and uk as we sent our children there. So we brought back the virus. Quarantine for one month is perfect. But 14 days is taken in general. So some escape testing and later can transmit. That is what happened.
Govt and Health staff had done their part. We did our part. Let us continue to follow the advice and we will win.
Time to open up and live with Covid. It will continue to be here and throughout the world for next 10 yrs with ups and down with mutations.
    Enjoy life.

If you are looking at the effectiveness of the vaccine then the age of the people being compared does not matter. This is a binary condition that is you are either vaxed or your are not.

Roughly 4 out of 5 people in the Cayman Islands are vaccinated. You would expect 80% of cases to be in this group if the vaccine doesn’t make a difference. However that isn’t what we are seeing and this matches the experience in the rest of the world among hundreds of millions of people.

I hope you are prepared to shelter in place as you really shouldn’t be risking your health out in the community.

Vaccination does not provide complete protection but it is reckless to go without when it is an option.

Or those cases could just be kids, who mainly do just fine regardless…..

    • Robert Mugabe IV says:

You are just another of the huge proportion of people who don’t have a basic idea of what they are reading. So calm down!
It said 61% of the cases were unvaxxed.
It did not say that ALL of that 61% REFUSED to take the vaccine. Are ya with me? Do you see the difference?
………,,,,,,, There are different groups of people from youngest to oldest who havnt been vaccinated for completely different reasons than just REFUSING
That’s why the breakdowns of percentages need to be done correctly, which has not been happening.

This means that your unvaccinated coworker, friend, or family member is more likely to give you covid. Even if you are not worried about getting really sick, do you really want to quarantine for two weeks? Choose carefully who you are around.

    • Anonymous says:

Garbage. Everyone I have heard of who is positive now running at about 11 people are vaccinated. I have to be worried about vaccinated people thinking they are invincible walking around spreading it.

      • Anonymous says:

News reporting that fully vaccinated professional athletes, coaches and staff in the NFL are currently infected. Covid is making a comeback.

    • Anonymous says:

No dumbass, do the math and deduct the 14% of unvaccinated children from the 61% …. Whoolah! It’s actually 47% of the unvaccinated and 53% of the vaccinated who are infected. So go sit down with your idiotic bias towards the unvaccinated. The fact is, we all need to be careful!

      • Anonymous says:

Please explain the purpose of deducting children from the calculation.

This is just showing that unvaccinated people (whether it’s kids or adults) are more likely to catch covid.

      • Anonymous says:

Apparently the unvaccinated don’t understand math too well, though.

        • Clearly they don't understand many things says:

Grasping at straws to justify the choice they have made.

If it weren’t potentially life threatening and a terrible cost for Cayman as a society at large it would be comical and we could insert something about Darwin awards.

But it is a bloody big deal and the fact that they don’t understand basic math is tragic.

😂 my 3 vaccinated coworkers are the ones with Covid whereas my boss and I (unvaccinated) are the only ones negative and test negative every day for the last 2.5 weeks. So no we weren’t the ones to be weary of. Regardless, we all need to be sensible in the way we conduct ourselves, follow protocols and do what we can to protect ourselves.

    • Anonymous says:

You can’t really choose your coworker

    • Anonymous says:

Fake news! Most companies have their unvaxxed employees testing weekly but good attempt to lay blame on the unvaxxed. It is the asymptomatic vaxxed that are spreading the virus. They have no clue they’re infected and walk around like rules do not apply to them.

    • Anonymous says:

Anyone positive can pass along covid, even while feeling fine and without knowing. It doesn’t matter if they are vaccinated or not. Unless you’re a maniac trying to get covid, you should give people 6 feet of space and mask up (ie. over your mouth chin and nose) in public until this surge is through.

      • Anonymous says:

True but these numbers show that unvaccinated people are getting infected at a higher rate than vaccinated people. So you’d be better off sharing an office for example with someone who is vaccinated because they are less likely to catch covid.

But obviously this is a sensitive issue for people who have chosen not to get vaccinated.

    • Robert Mugabe IV says:

Problem with that statement is NOBODY can prove who they got infected from. Airborne transmission!
Can survive in air for 3hrs.
So next time your in Fosters or ALT or wherever just remember there is air circulating throughout the buildings that is tainted with Covid.
So tell me again how you can be certain Twas an unvaxxed person transmitted the Covid to you.
Simple fact is that you can’t.

    • Anonymous says:

It also means that your vaccinated coworker, friend or family member can infect you. The solution is isolation and a crackdown on all public places that are not utilizing recognized safety measures.

  22. Anonymous says:

if no real medical reason for not getting the vax,,,they should be made pay for all covid related treatment.

  23. Anonymous says:

yep as we have known forever…
they catch it easier…they spread it easier…more likley to get serious illness…more likely to put our health service at risk.
yet we are refusing to implement vax passport system in social environments that would protect them and us?

Did you know? If a patient gets ill to the point of requiring a mechanical ventilator, they are not awake and sitting up in bed checking memes on their phone until they get better. They are face-down in an induced comma until their lungs are able to function on their own again which can take 15 days or longer, so many people’s muscles atrophy (they cease up) so that they require physio to regain their upper body or walking ability – if they survive the ordeal. Not to mention the sequels. So this is NOT a severe flu. Do not risk catching it; please heed the protective measures or get vaccinated.

Very very few people in the US hospitals get to the intubation state, and they are usually have severe comorbidites, such as 4th stage of cancer for example.

Hospitals in the US are mostly treating people with medication and oxygen avoiding the need to put a patient on a ventilator.

So stop fear mongering here, and ask the right question: What early treatment being used in the Cayman Islands to prevent hospitalizations? Not a single article out of hundreds, not a single interview with HSA, Dr.Lee, whoever has ever talked about early treatments that Save Lives.

To 03/11/2021 at 1:42 pm: Do not confuse information sharing with fear mongering. You refer to US hospitals; so… only the US has hospitals? What about the rest of the world?

I agree with most of your points, but induced apostrophes are just as bad as induced commas.

That’s a lot of breakthrough cases!
Why isn’t the booster being made available to anybody who’s eligible, not just the 50+ and vulnerable .. surely it’s now a matter of preventing hospitalizations by any means available

    • Anonymous says:

I do not know if these classify as breakthrough cases. I suspect most are asymptomatic and only know they are positive because of the high level of testing and far reach of contact tracing in Cayman. I suspect in other countries they would never have been a positive statistic.

I think the unvaccinated percent is high due to school outbreaks and kids catching COVID. Under 12 doesn’t have the option to be vaccinated.

    • Anonymous says:

Because there is a world-wide shortage of vaccines and if I am in a low risk category it is morally wrong for me to get a booster before someone somewhere else gets even a first dose.

I think they want to make it available to the most vulnerable first. We have had two weeks of 50+ now, so I would think they would add groups like retail, restaurant, and grocery workers next. Seems logical to protect those who were in the first groups receiving the jab in order. But definitely need to add frontline employees ASAP. Hopefully will be soon.
