(CNS): Despite the pre-testing and the worldwide rollout of vaccines to combat COVID-19, a dozen travellers on flights from Jamaica and Miami tested positive over the weekend for the coronavirus. Chief Medical Officer Dr John Lee said that from the 808 COVID-19 tests carried out this weekend, 12 came back positive, increasing the current number of active cases of the virus among those in quarantine to 35, with four of those individuals suffering symptoms. The number of people in isolation at home or in a government facility is now 723. Public health has still not stated how many people have been able to reduce their isolation period as a result of being vaccinated.

Meanwhile, government continues to offer vaccines to everyone aged 16 and over and around 45% of the estimated population or 29,644 adults have received at least one dose of the Pfizer vaccine, with 28% having completed the two-dose course.

At the last count, public health officials said that the percentage of those aged between 50 and 60 who have received their first shot is now 65%, compared to 44% of those aged 40 to 50, 36% of the 30 to 40 year olds and just over a quarter of those under 30.

Alaska governor to Biden in response to call for face mask mandates: ‘No thanks’

“No thanks, @POTUS – you can keep your mask mandate,” the Alaska Republican tweeted Monday. “We’ll keep doing it the #Alaska way: trust the people & let them live their lives.“

Cayman needs to observe what is happening in Gibraltar for the next few months. They have fully vaccinated 75% of their population and are starting to re-open. It will be interesting to see what happens there with all of the new variants. Perhaps if everything there does not go to hell by July we should think about how we can safely re-open

Just open the borders to those who are vaccinated. Skip the quarantine!

And reintroduce local transmission? No thanks!

The ones that will be coming will be vaccinated. They will be tested. You want to stay locked up forever?

        • Anonymous says:

Being vaccinated does not mean the person can’t catch or carry the virus. It only means they are better protected from it.

          • Anonymous says:

It means we won’t get sick from it. It also means we are significantly less likely to catch it or pass it on, but we can. I fail to see why we have to quarantine to protect the anti vaxxers. They’re welcome not to take it but that should not restrict the rest of us. You don’t want the vaccine that’s your problem not mine.

I want to stay locked up until it is relatively safe to open. Opening now, in any way, would be madness, cost tens of lives, and wreak economic devastation on the aspects of the economy that are holding it all together.

        Get the vaccine then.

It is gonna happen one day.
Cayman is not an island from Disney World.

What I want to know is at what day do they test negative? Is it upon arrival, which would suggest the tests taken in the other country are not accurate. Or is it after 14 days meaning they either caught the virus during their travels or the virus has a long incubation period. I would have thought that’s a useful metric to determine the length of quarantine.

This is concerning, especially since all are supposed to be tested before traveling.

I hope and pray that ALL of our Airport workers and bus/taxi operators are taking all precautions!

If we required Caymanians and residents taking shopping, partying and other non-essential trips off island to be fully vaccinated first perhaps the numbers would go down.

So, just so that we are clear, these are 12 that we are supposed to believe had some kind of a negative PCR test less than 72 hrs prior? Might we be so bold as to suggest that all inbound travelers take those 72 hrs more seriously? Maybe extend the expectation of due precaution all the way to the boarding gate? Good grief.

How much it cost to buy pre-flight negative test results in the places these flights are coming from?

I recall that we were sending samples for genetic sequencing in order to determine which variants were arriving and with what frequency. After the initial report everything has gone silent. The number and types of variants arriving should not be a state secret. What are they not telling us and why?

I dont understand what the government is doing because they say no tourist will be coming here and yet still every day you see a new face you have never seen before and the amount of car rental on the road is unbelievable, why do they keep taking people from those covid country how I see it they might as well open up the border, also I taught it was the cruise that bringing the covid here now its no ships but covid still coming what a dam mess

    • Anonymous says:

Maybe you need to inform yourself. Most tourists cannot come but it doesn’t mean NO tourists can come. Those with family ties and those with property here are allowed to come. Also, there are lots of new people coming here to work in financial services. As for seeing new faces everyday, do you know everyone on this island? There’s 60,000+ people here and I am pretty sure I don’t know you even though I’ve been here 20 years.

Covid: Secret filming exposes contamination risk at test results lab.

“Evidence at the lab captured on film shows:
Checks to ensure samples could be identified, were rushed, meaning tests were sometimes discarded unnecessarily.

Some test samples “glooped” across an area where other samples had been placed, risking contamination.

Swabs used by people to take Covid tests were left in their tubes when processed, presenting a further contamination risk

A quality control scientist telling the reporter that the quality of the results progressively got worse throughout the day

The findings have led experts to question the way the lab was operating.”
