(CNS): People across Cayman were mourning John Jefferson Sr on Monday, after the former MLA, known as “Chef John” died aged 93 on Saturday. Speaker McKeeva Bush announced an official funeral for the late politician, who was first elected in 1968 and served West Bay for eight years. His body will lie in state at the House of Parliament on Friday before the service on Saturday at Wesleyan Holiness Church in West Bay, where he was formerly a pastor.

Flags were flown at half-mast at government buildings and MPs paused for a moment in the Parliament to remember the well known West Bay man, also known as Brother John.

Delivering a short address from the speaker’s chair, Bush said, “Brother John stood strongly at all times for all things Caymanian, not budging on any matter he felt would cause moral decadence of the society and our values.”

There was an outpouring of sympathy on social media for the friends and family over the death of the much loved local community leader, who has for years fed the souls and bellies of Caymanians.

I will always remember his beach BBQ’s, the very best, but even more I remember Chef John as one of the older generation, humble but very wise, a great friend to all. Our little world of the Cayman Islands will be a little smaller without him.

If this man was the Chef John that fed me and my family for the past 24 years from his stand at Public Beach I am truly saddened by his passing.

I only knew him as a wonderful Christian man and his family as such too.

    His barbecue is legendary.

Cook some combos up for the Angels Chef John. Rest In Peace!

Brother John was a good man.
Too bad that it was McKeeva speaking for him in the house.

Chef John was a good man indeed and I extend my condolences to his family. However, I found it quite sad and sickening, that it was Mckeeva Bush speaking of this lovely man in our honourable house.Shame on all elected members and Martyn Roper for allowing this disrespect to the house and the people of the Cayman Islands to continue.
