Police focused on rounding up burglars

Cayman News Service(CNS): A 33-year-old man from George Town was one of half a dozen suspected burglars that the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service has rounded up over the last few weeks as it maintains its focus on break-ins. Detective Superintendent Peter Lansdown said burglaries have declined since last year but the police continue to target the crime. The latest suspect appeared in court Wednesday, charged with a break-in that happened on the morning of 20 March, when a building on South Sound Road was broken into.

“Despite a drop in the incidence of burglary last year, it continues nonetheless to be one of our top concerns and priorities,” said Detective Superintendent Peter Lansdown. “Since last week we have arrested six persons, four of whom have been brought before the court, and we know these efforts have a tangible impact.”

My qualified disagreement is that 1 beat officer to cover 50 sq miles after 8pm is insufficient coverage. Response time (if there is a response), is measured in glacial quarter hour increments. Maybe you’ve never called 9-1-1 after 6pm, but I have, many times. Others that have unfortunately had to call during “crime hours” can surely relate. If the RCIPS were transparent about their evening staffing for our most important tourism district you would be appalled.

I think RCIPS should be commended on dealing with the vast amount of daily crime going on in Cayman. Not many of these criminals get away with their crimes. If residents were more forthcoming they’d be a lot more put behind bars. Well done RCIPS!!

Instead of “rounding up” these people how about we focus on treatment! Where are the churches on this?

Burglars and bandits operate on a nocturnal schedule knowing that our cops are off-shift at home in their pajamas.

Police Officers are not “off shift” as you put it 11.02am during the night. Officers are on duty 24hrs of the day. Even when there are not on duty a Police Officer is never off duty if you can work that one out!
