Corey Robert Dodge

(CNS): Corey Robert Dodge has been given a prison sentence of three years and three months following his conviction after trial in February of indecent assault on a woman at a neighbour’s house in South Sound last June. Dodge had denied the allegation of sexual assault, claiming he believed it was consensual, but the court heard that the victim had been traumatised by the experience. Dodge was a guest at the house along with a small group of other people who were drinking. Late in the night, after the victim, a former girlfriend of the host whom Dodge had not met before, had gone to sleep in one of the bedrooms, he entered the room and committed the assault.

Justice Marlene Carter said that Dodge, an expatriate who has been working in Cayman as an electrician, had shown empathy towards the victim but not remorse. He said he was ashamed about being in court and sorry the victim felt violated but he was not remorseful as he continued to claim his innocence.

However, the judge said there was no evidence that he was a sexual predator and that this was an opportunistic assault fuelled by alcohol.

Justice Carter said that although Dodge had a previously clean record, the offending was aggravated by the fact that the woman had also been drinking, but she had an expectation that she would be safe in a bedroom at the home of a person she trusted. The judge also noted that Dodge was a guest in the home when he attacked the owner’s former girlfriend.

After reading the victim impact assessment, the judge noted that the psychological effect on the woman had been substantial, and with no family support in Cayman, she had sought counselling. Since the assault she has suffered from depression and anxiety, night terrors and panic attacks. She also reported feeling  socially alienated and was finding it difficult to concentrate on her work.

Dodge, who had mostly been on bail since being charged, was immediately remanded into custody to begin serving.

How can a sex crazed pervert only get 3 years and 3 months, yet the tennis coach gets 6 years and 8 months for nicking some cash. Whilst both crimes are a disgrace, I’d have thought the punishments should be the other way round?

As I have lived there, it is amazing how if you are an expat, you are disscimminated against. I have lived that and for him to stay there during this process speaks alot. I know the guy! He’s very easy going and a very good guy! Never would he have done this! This is totally the judicial system there that you are guilty before innocent if you are an expat! DE

An easy going, good guy who got drunk and raped a woman. She was asleep, alone in a bedroom and he chose to enter that room and assault her and he thinks it was consensual? He didn’t even know her.

It is very apparent that ignorance is prevalent in the comments here. Though not to minimize the seriousness of this unfortunate circumstance for the victim, but I do not believe there can be a fair outcome for either person based on both individuals testimony, considering as it appears they were significantly inebriated at the time of the per ported assault. To condemn a person under these circumstances could be construed as a travesty in itself. The point being, we weren’t their!

She was asleep. She had never met him before and went to bed alone before everyone else. He crept into a house that was not his after people had left and the house was dark …..and forced himself upon her in. He then tried to call it consent.

Women cannot give consent if they are not conscious.

He was found guilty and then still tried to call it consent. He has no remorse and is a disgusting human being.

Build the wall high enough that a landing approach is not possible. Simples. Of course, no one will be leaving then either.

“the judge said there was no evidence that he was a sexual predator” uh… THAT is the MO of a sexual predator…
Justice Marlene Carter needs to attend some classes about sexual assault and sexual predators. (They get drunk too.. which makes them think it’s consensual…)

“No evidence of being a predator and fueled by alcohol”, is the justice suggesting that it therefore is a lesser crime?

Deport him immediately and pay his country to take him into their prison system which would be less cost to the Cayman Islands and ease the mental stress on the victim.

Have been cases in the past of home countries accepting their nationals back to serve their sentences there. Usually in cases where the home country thinks the prison environment where they were convicted would be overly harsh or even dangerous- but doesn’t happen very often because who has sympathy for a criminal or wants to pick up the cost?

Except Cayman prison is better than life outside. Some of them commit crimes to go there. Three square meals a day and watch t.v. all day. What a life for those who are lazy and don’t care. They’re enjoying their steak while we can barely afford chicken.

It could be negotiated – particularly where large numbers of particular nationalities work here. Philippines and Jamaica, for example.

Corey got drunk and thought that a woman being nice to him meant she wanted him to sneak back after everyone was in bed and wake her up for some rape.
      That’s not a railroad.
He should have gotten a longer sentence.

Why no deportation order, or is it simply that one was sought and made, but not reported?
