UK Brexit chaos continues as PM plans Brussels trip

Theresa May in Parliament

(CNS): British Prime Minister Theresa May is planning to return to Brussels next week in an effort to renegotiate the Brexit withdrawal deal without the controversial ‘backstop’, which relates to avoiding a hard border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland after the UK leaves the European Union. But the goal is a tough one that many believe cannot be achieved. Meanwhile, chaos prevails in the UK, with the truce within the Conservative party already falling apart following a moment of unity in the Commons on Tuesday, when Tory Brexiteers agreed to support a motion giving May a mandate to go back to the EU replace to the backstop with “alternative arrangements”.

Some Brexiteers have already accused May of making mistakes over her choice of negotiating team, while her remainers, including some ministers, are calling on her to cross one of her red lines and stay in the Customs Union to secure a concession from Brussels over the backstop.

An increasing number of Tories are suggesting that the UK will need to ask the EU for an extension to the looming Article 50 departure date to avoid crashing out with a hard Brexit.

But European officials are concerned that, even though she is currently setting a course for a no-deal exit at the end of June, the PM will eventually have to ask for an extension but that she lacks the political courage to ask for the longer Brexit delay that she really needs.

Critics believe the prime minister’s strategy of simply trying to survive from day to day will lead to her requesting an inadequate three-month extension for fear of enraging the hard-line Brexiteers.

As the people of Britain face possible food and medicine shortages in the immediate wake of what is increasingly likely to be a hard Brexit, companies are beginning to stockpile goods. A no-deal Brexit threatens the UK’s food security and will lead to higher prices and empty shelves in the short-term, according to the British Retail Consortium.

Brexit stirs up the sentiments that are the most loathsome and out of touch aspects of the English character.

It’s odd that anyone that criticises Brexit on here is crudely called “leftist”, an insult only used by the extreme right or those who swallow fake news, when the vast majority of Tory MPs, the UKs party of the right, strongly supported and campaigned for Remain. Seeing Brexit as a bad idea is not a left/right issue, certainly not the way some of the more basic posters on this thread would like to say it is.

8.50 misses the point. “Leftist” is an idiotic term to refer to someone who is as likely as anything to be on the centre right political. Indeed the far left of UK politics was traditionally among the most vocal of the anti-EU critics.

Your talking with people who love Trump, reject science and have a distaste for all things that are not what they are – foreign, gay, different religion etc. Being called “leftist” by them just means “you are different and thus I condemn you”. You should take being called “leftist” a compliment.

Your made up suffering complimented by using historical suffering from minorities is a brilliant way to sell yourself as part of the people. That would have worked 30 years ago with documented cases to prove your point. All you have now are remnants of anger from a 30 years ago when non of that is happening in the present. Good luck foisting your depraved perception on the present.

That’s pretty much all you and your ilk seem to have — insults. I understand you Remainers have strong feelings and opinions; so do we. If we can’t talk it out in a civil manner here, then where?

Do you see how this is a microcosm of the division that is happening back home? The problem won’t go away and must be dealt with in a manner which most benefits UK citizens. Polarising and insulting comments don’t help. Not one bit.

      • Anonymous says:

The best way to sort this out would be to put what happens next to a three way vote – Stay, Deal, Leave No Deal. As a Remainer if the second two options prevailed fair enough. The first vote was a joke, filled with lies, illegal campaigns, fake news etc. If the will of the people in a fair vote was to leave, I can live with that, but I suspect there is a reason the extremists in the Tory party do not want a People’s Vote, because they know they are in the minority.

And that ignorant summation of the average leave voter just demonstrates the blind arrogance that some Remoaners indulge in.
And that is mainly because they are over pampered metropolitan lefties that wouldn’t know how the real world works outside of their little bubble.
The mind numbing idiocy of their argument illustrates just how out of touch their position is from the mainstream.
It’s not about racism, xenophobia or British superiority, it’s about the lies that have been forced upon the British people by successive governments.
From the original Common Market vote in the 70’s to the foisted treaties that were sneakily bought in to draw an unsuspecting and largely ignored population in a federal Europe.
Followed by uncontrolled Immigration and further lies, politicians were caught out by their own deceit and arrogance.
Sadly the whiners cant see the truth for their own dreams of European dominance with sovereign countries.
So the most undemocratic experiment in British history is coming to an end, and good riddance to it.
Of course, if those who sit from a far and snipe don’t like it, they can go live in Europe and leave us the hell alone.

China and Russia (amongst others) have been agitating and stoking ethnocentrism via subtle popular media and faked clickbait editorials; falsely linking your problems to “migrants”, and disrupting the collective morality of millions. They have been caught paying PR firms to post this crap, as part of their efforts to vacate Western government influence and justice-based process from troubled zones around the world. They were successful and have subsequently projected themselves into those vacuums to look like the good guys. That you haven’t even recognized the product of your own folly, even in hindsight, is sad for the UK, its territories, and for justice and humanity around the planet.

I beg to differ. Why is everyone so afraid of a second referendum. The problem of 52 versus 48% is that it has torn the country apart. Let the people vote on the actual mechanics of what leave means or indeed stay. But be in no doubt many of the people who voted to leave were NOT socialists.

(This is a serious/philosophical question given the 50/50 split in so many democracies today, including Cayman.)

What if the next vote is 52%-48% in either direction? Or do we need to move away from ‘50%+1’ to decide things to a larger majority in order to foster more generalist policies? (Imagine a US election where it took 75%, rather than 52%, to win the presidency.)
