The problem is that the Law has no teeth. I am a safety officer for a private company and have first hand knowledge of the inspections carried out the department. The law needs fines that are handed out similiar to a speeding ticket- in real time as the offence is found. This is how its handled by CANOSH.
That is a communist/socialist idea. We do not need any of these far left regulations.
The police department is good at giving high lights about certain incidents. When this happens it makes them look like they are hiding valuable information from the public.
We know that the case is still being investigated be the nature of the injury could have been revealed also the construction site where it happened even the company name. None of that information would have effective the investigation.
Of course its business as usual. Inspectors don’t inspect. They pick up their pay cheque. They are good at that!
Because big money developers pay big money to big pocket officials in return to keeping their big mouths shut.
These people want the jobs so if there are any problems they have a right to leave. We do not need any more beuorocratic nonsense to affect business. We need more development.
Were all goverment mandated job site saftey procedures in place? What about the warehouse site right behind the labor and pension office, are they noticing all the flagrant saftey violations on that project? How about the new Public Works building? Seems our paid inspectors are asleep somewhere and not doing there job. Why was that fancy truck purchased for because there are no job site saftey inspections being carried out.
It cannot have escaped your notice that there are many jobs in Cayman that are paid but no one turns up to do them. Par for the course!
That is correct and we do not need any government interference into this. These workers could quit if they don’t like there job.
No good having a Law that has NO teeth and this is exactly what the safety law has here…ZERO teeth.
Beg to differ, as a construction worker for a major company in Cayman, we had 2 vists just in Decemebr….so the comments are a fallacy. Can more be done, of course but dont go knocking what is being done, no matter how little. What is needed is onsite fines, as the OSHA agency in USA has.
No we do not need any fines, inspections or more regulations. The industry can take care of itself just fine. That is how we can keep prices lower.
What happened to safety first, I guess that doesn’t apply to slavery with these poor sufferers.
It is not slavery, all the workers are well paid with benefits. They even get to do sub contract work at great rates. All this regulation does is drive up the cost of doing business. We do not need it, let the market set the rates and lets get on with development. The developers are risking everything for small rewards after paying everyone. To bad for these workers but they need to be careful on job sites.
When will the department of labor enforce the laws which are on the books for workers safety? Hell right behind there office is a warehouse being built which has very unsafe scaffolding, men working on the roof without safety tie offs and loads of other infractions yet nothing is being done. Also the building in the Public Works compound has very evident safety violations yet nothing is being enforced but we taxpayers are paying the government inspectors to sit in the air-conditioned office. Get out and do your jobs. The Builders Law was implemented to stop these sham companies yet seems like business as usual.
They wont touch the money boys
Dumb ass you need to get your facts together first and find out WHO enforces the Builders Law?????
Correct, get rid of the stupid builders law as well as these other out of date regulations.
No Builders Law is on hold, as some “voters” were not to happy about being held accountable.
