(CNS): A woman riding a bicycle was critically injured in a collision with a car on Gerard Smith Avenue, Cayman Brac, around 8:30 last Thursday evening. Police said a white Hyundai H1 and the bicycle were both travelling along the left lane but in opposite direction when they collided, suggesting the bike was on the wrong side of the road. The woman initially received emergency treatment at the Faith Hospital, but due to the seriousness of her injuries, she was air lifted around 5:00 Friday morning to Health City Cayman Islands in East End, Grand Cayman, by the RCIPS Air Operations Unit.

The woman is still in critical condition and has suffered life threatening injuries.

The driver of the Hyundai was not injured and the cause of the crash is now being investigated.

Police are asking that anyone with information pertaining to this incident, is to please call the Cayman Brac Police Station at 948-0331 or 926-0635. Anonymous tips can be provided to the RCIPS Confidential Tip Line at 949-7777, the Miami-based call centre of Crime Stoppers at 800-8477(TIPS), or online here.

Very sad indeed that most comments blame the person who is in critical condition while the driver is free from any physical harm and shares ni blame in what he caused. What speed was he going to hit this young lady with such impact? For some reason people use that road in the Brac to test the pick up speed of their vehicle. I often hear tires screeching across the sandy gravel side road as car drivers on that road seem to want to impress anyone who may be near that busy area. Yes, the woman may have been on the same side at the time, had she perhaps crossed over to get to her destination? Was the driver distracted and was unable to stop or slow down? Continued prayers for the victim and her family . Shame on the Brac public to those placing blame soley on her. This could have happened to anyone of us.

This is very unfortunate and I wish her a speedy recovery BUT this is something that she does all the time – rides on the wrong side of the road into oncoming traffic. It was an accident waiting to happen.

If they were both in their left lanes and collided they would have been travelling in the same direction. Since they were travelling in opposite directions when they collided, one was in their left lane and one was in their right lane.

It said they were both in “the” left lane, not their left lanes.
Since we drive on the left, we all know where the left lane is so the article is correct, don’t try to me a wise ass.

Point is, the cyclist was in the wrong. Cyclists are supposed to follow the flow of traffic not go against it like pedestrians.

Speedy recovery to the cyclist. Sad whenever someone gets hurt but it was by her own negligence.

Hoping for the best for her condition, but as a fellow cyclist, you’re simply asking for it if you ride against traffic. I’ve literally screamed at a few cyclists riding against traffic who force me into the road to give them the way they aren’t entitled to.

Ride on the left, use lights at night, be aware, and your chances of being hit are less than being hit in a car.

I know a lot of people are going to say well she should’ve been on the other side of the road but I know why she did it. So she could see oncoming traffic instead of getting hit from behind she could maybe get out of the way in time. At least that’s what my thought process would be at 8:30 at night but you wouldn’t catch me on a bike that late at night on any island except for Little Cayman.

I understand that she was already hit by a car once that day so was perhaps dazed? Praying for her recovery.

Well if her thought process is your thought process of riding against traffic so that she can see oncoming traffic could have gotten her killed.

      Follow the traffic rules. Simple.

Just like the roundabouts, if people would just use their indicators, stay in their respective lane and do not switch lanes on the roundabout and give way when applicable, there would not be so many accidents on the roundabouts.
