Girl sexually assaulted in water at Smith Cove

(CNS): Police have arrested a 36-year-old man from George Town following a report that a girl was indecently assaulted in the water at Smith Barcadere yesterday. The report was made to the police around  3:20pm and the man was arrested shortly afterwards. He remains in police custody while inquiries continue. The child’s age has not been reported. This is the second incident in the last few months at the popular George Town public beach location where children have been assaulted. 

In February Joseph Valiayaveettil (51) was charged with two counts of indecent assault on a girl, also while in the water, and the case is currently before the Summary Court.

This latest case is now under investigation and police said all safeguarding measures have been put in place for the victim. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the George Town Police Station at 949-4222.
