Fraudulent email on election scandal circulating

| 31/05/2017 | 9 Comments

Cayman News Service(CNS): Officials are warning that an apparently salacious but totally fraudulent email that purports to be from Supervisor of Elections Wesley Howell is not coming from the Elections Office email servers and that anyone who recieves the email should not forward it or click on the links. The email claims that a candidate in the recent elections has been caught on video rigging the elections and bribing an official and it supposedly provides a link to the video.

Although the email claims to come from Howell, “Chief Office Public Safety and Security”, it is clearly not a government email.

The email is circulating very rapidly, officials said, however efforts are being by a cyber security team to shut down the email servers behind this chain of emails.

The one I received this morning was from @gov.ky
It was held up by Flows Spam Digest that I get daily. (Which is very good I might add) But I still wouldn’t have opened it.

Puritan DOT ky is the website for Puritan Cleaners, so this is an obvious spoofing attempt, and should be immediately obvious that the elections office would not be sending by that address.

I get about 2-3 dozen failure notices about emails sent “spoofing” my sender address every day. A good IT sleuth should be able to ferret out this poser by analyzing the transmission headers and routing of the messages.

There are methods of blocking the “harvesting” of most email addresses on the web, but the spammers are learning new tricks to get around such address obfuscation. The battle rages to keep ahead of them!

Remember, this is how the “WannaCry” ransomware was circulated, so NEVER click on any links unless you VERIFY, VERIFY, VERIFY the source of the message first!

These scammers are really stupid. Once the email is read thoroughly, one can identify the name Wesley Powell in the line with the email address. Eye for detail is critical here. I deleted it immediately. Mr. Howell is a professional and he would not compromise his integrity to forward such an email. Sadly, we are not always willing to discard these email but open them to get the news. I hope people did not open it.

Whoever opens it deserves what they get. This email was so very obviously spam. So if one falls for it, ‘da wah ya get!’

There are kids with email accounts that might not be so savvy or elderly that might not be as educated about these things, once they get hacked their contact become vulnerable. Try not to be so nonchalant about it, because you never know.

So your view is the honest but dim person deserves to be cheated by the thief? Nice.
