Severe weather headed for the Cayman Islands
(CNS): A strong tropical wave, which has a very high chance of becoming a tropical storm, is headed towards the Cayman Islands and local weather experts warn it could be here tonight (1 August). Government issued a severe weather warning this morning as the National Hurricane Centre said it ecpected the system, which was crossing the Hispaniola coast around lunchtime, to develop into a tropical storm. Regardless of the potential development, the system was already packing winds up to 45mph on Monday and was expected to bring heavy rainfall and gusty winds to Cayman.
Moving west at 20-25 mph, the tropical wave was forecast to pass across Jamaica later this afternoon or this evening before reaching the Cayman Islands by tonight. Local forecasters said the Cayman area will see increased cloudiness and showers from late tonight with cloudy rainy conditions tomorrow with up t0 1.25 inches of rainfall and possible flooding in low lying areas.
Residents are being warned to exercise caution as forecasters predicted moderate to strong easterly winds and rough seas through the night and wave heights of 5 to 7 feet along the east and south coasts.
All marine interests should seek safe harbor until further notice. The RCIPS Joint Marine Unit also strongly recommended that boating activities be suspended and urged boat owners to take the necessary precautions to secure their vessels.

Pray, pray, pray and it will go away.
Or are we now being punished because of accepting gay people ?
Y tho?
Mr. Eden what does the magic book tell you ?
Are we going to be ok ?
Please Mr. Eden, help us.
Unbelievable!!! residents are only being told of the impending bad weather that will be bearing down on these islands. It’s really sad how CIG barely recognize this storm. What are the homeless, single mothers that had to work all day, the elderly, the sick and the handicap do in less than 24 notice? Betcha if it was a drug boat or a new hedge fund it would be on the front of the news paper! Blatantly a disregard to the unfortunate residents!!
really a bogus comment when the local weather service had it in their outlook from friday gone. maybe your maths is just poor
There goes electricity!
I stocked up on batteries and candles at lunch time today….I’m ready for Cuc this time…
Nice flood weather coming in – great time for breeding mosquitos I would say.
And WB gang bangers. Hell, it’s gonna be miserable, maybe we should all do a little breeding!
So glad they finally felt compelled to tell us. The fact that most of us have been following this since late last week shows just how much use you can attribute to the use and value of CIG weather service. They should have been issuing preliminary advisories over the weekend, not just as its about to arrive.
But even worse than them is the pointless and expensive in manpower Hazard Management Unit. They do nothing all year round and even have a PR person working for them.Social employment at its best…..worst.
anon 3:00 maybe you should pay attention to our forecast as it has been in the outlook since friday
Agree, and while we’re ranting, why is the NHC recon 12 hours and counting late? Jamaica sure could have used the info. To local wx service credit, they have issued a TS Watch, which must have taken sand, given that the NHC hasn’t first done so. Good on them.
No harm ever in being over cautious or extra ready. Watch for the feeding frenzy in the stores tomorrow. Hope everybody stays safe and keeps a cool head.
With all due respect NHC does not issue warnings for countries unless specifically arrange for. The country can issue the warning at any time. The warning is posted on their bulletins. The problem in this case was that there is not a mechanism in place for them to issue bulletins unless a system has formed.
Nothing like an armchair meteorologist
I don’t how to say this kindly, so I’ll just say it. If you’ve been here for any length of time, you have realized you’re on your own. I’ve heard radio “updates” that were mirrors of those 8 hours old, giving false and dangerous information. I’ve seen posted information that mirrored the NHC that was more than 12 hours old, and was dangerous to depend upon it.
My sense of things is that our NWS has become more proactive than in previous years. Us “armchair wx folk”, what I like to think of as “weather weenies” — most of us are on wx boards and have been for a long time through necessity of getting current and valid information. I’m not a trained met. That’s not to say I don’t have skills. I think most folk here are like that.
If you’re ever in doubt, ask an old sea captain. Most of them can sense the weather and the patterns and tell you what is going to happen. I was fortunate enough to have one of them mentor me. Capt. Arlen Reid, and he was rarely wrong. Miss you Cap.
The wages of sins is death!
You live in a hurricane-prone region. It is hurricane season. God is not pushing the clouds your way every year. It is because the planet spins on its axis, the axis is tilted, and the distribution of heat changes with the seasons.
It is guaranteed that the tropics will have hurricanes, and that movement of the Caribbean plate will cause earthquakes. People have figured out what causes these things, and the amount of sin has nothing to do with it.
I believe the above comments were posted as a joke….we are all well aware that we live in a hurricane prone region…..smdh!
True. The sinners move here to receive their punishment.
Sometimes it’s hard to tell. Because all the businesses are closed on Sundays, then people who don’t go to church have all day for gay sex.
Why the hell does every comment have to revolve around gay people all of a sudden?! Wtf does the weather have to do with gay people!! I’m so sick of hearing comments about gay people. Who cares what they want to do with their lives and their bodies. We are talking about the weather here. Try to FOCUS on that please…
Good old Cayman, can go to church on a Sunday, hit up the bar right after (I know a LOT of people that do this and this type of hypocrisy is one of the reasons why I dropped religion from my life), but can’t even buy a loaf of bread to feed the family. Backwards country. I long for the day that we remove religion from the court of law.
You can buy a loaf of bread many places on Sunday. You clearly don’t know where to shop then! Backwards country!? You ungrateful heathen! Be gone then since you’re not happy with the ways things are done around here!!
Atleats someone with common sense thanks
Too much sin in cayman
Who us? We love, tolerate and encourage every kind of sin.
Sin is everywhere and everyone of us sin at some time or other, some more than others, even you unless you are perfect?
What’s sin?
It’s a missing of the mark
I know, it wears you out, let’s hope for a day off work tomorrow to recuperate, and back at it by Wednesday.

Followed by a good old fashioned buttock stabbing.
