Beached Cuban boat irritates residents

(CNS): An abandoned Cuban boat that is currently beached at the water’s edge in South Sound, near to Miss Lassie’s House, is irritating residents. A group of Cuban migrants arrived in the vessel two weeks ago and it has been sitting there since. Despite complaints, the authorities explained that there are some challenges in moving the vessel.
Officials told CNS one of the reasons the group of Cubans crammed on board were forced to give up their journey from Cuba was because there is a hole in the side of the boat, which is hampering efforts to move it. The Public Works Department is responsible for the removal of vessels in such circumstances and the immigration department is pressing for the removal of the dilapidated boat.
CNS readers living in the area said that, as well as being an eyesore, they were worried that the boat was leaking gasoline. But an even greater concern is that the boat is near to a turtle nesting area, and with the start of the egg laying season, female turtles may be put off by the debris and diesel.
CNS also understands that there is another damaged Cuban boat at Beach Bay that is also presenting problems for the local salvage experts.

How about the DOE and the PWD banding together and addressing the derelict (Aqua – still afloat), the sunken and abandoned vessels that sit in the waters of Governors Harbour??

Yes it does really need to be removed, mainly for safety reasons but I doubt that the “residents” want it removed for that reason. Maybe an aesthetic reason but not safety.
In accordance with Public Works and DEH practices, first a red sticker has to be placed on the windshield. Then you have to wait about a year to see if the owner makes contact.
Shouldn’t be too irritating to chop up if its wood, fiberglass is a different story. Beach bonfire anybody?

Try to get them towed out to sea and sink the vessels with target practice. That’s what the US COAST GUARD, US & HMS NAVY does.
Sinking them with gunfire from what exactly? 9mm hand guns and HK submachine guns? Or the old 303 rifles the cadet corps have? Because that’s the extent of our “navy” armament.

Thank you CNS for drawing some much needed attention to this issue. Hopefully something is done about it now. The weather forecast for this weekend looks amazing, it would be an ideal time to get it moved while the sea is calm.

Why can’t the people who has been so willing to provide food and water to these illegal migrants and sent then off in their unsafe boats to their death do some good for a change and just move this boat. Clearly your help of these migrants is the reason we have been flooded with them.

I live a few houses down and it doesn’t bother me at all.
However, with the waves being pretty heavy in South Sound for the past few days, you can smell the diesel. Plus 2 of the containers broke off and were beached. Someone has collected them already, but it will continue to break down/apart and be even more difficult to remove.
Buy a chainsaw and get to work. Not that difficult.
