Cayman heats up in line with global trend
(CNS): The average global land surface temperature was 0.9°C (1.62°F) above the 20th century historical average in 2015, knocking 2014 off the top of the annual temperature charts, which was in comparison just 0.74°C (1.33°F) above average. The Cayman Islands also endured a steamy year, with local weather experts confirming that the average temperature here for 2015 was 82.9°F, more than 0.9°F above the 30-year average temperature for the islands (81.8°F) and in line with the global increase.
“Annual temperatures have increased for the past four years by a total of 1.2°F,” Chief Meteorological Officer John Tibbetts confirmed. “A similar pattern is observed in Cayman Brac, with 2015 having a slightly lower temperature.”
Rainfall was also down by almost nine inches and the pattern of Cayman’s heaviest rains were out of synch with the usual seasonal downpours. While the islands on average see the most rainfall in September and October, this year June and November were by far the wettest months. The average rainfall figures for September, normally the wettest month, is almost 222 millimetres but in September 2015 only 74.5mm of rain were recorded by the National Weather Service during a month which recorded the highest average temperature for the year, turning out to be the hottest month in a very hot year.
Around the world scientists have said El Niño played a part in the increase in temperatures. But, as has been predicted, they also believe the planet is simply getting hotter. The UN World Meteorological Organization (WMO) announced this weekend that for the first time on record the world reached the threshold of 1°C above pre-industrial temperatures.
“It is a sobering moment in the history of our planet,” said WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas.
Temperatures soared, which scientists say is not just due to natural phenomena but also a result of mankind’s actions.
“An exceptionally strong El Niño and global warming caused by greenhouse gases joined forces with dramatic effect on the climate system in 2015,” Taalas said. “The power of El Niño will fade in the coming months but the impacts of human-induced climate change will be with us for many decades.”
If world governments can reduce greenhouse gas emissions in accordance with commitments at the recent climate conference in Paris, the world may stay within the maximum 2°C limit but Taalas warned that climate change will still have negative impacts over the next five decades for all of us.
“This emphasises the need to invest in adaptation besides mitigation. It is important to strengthen the capability of countries to provide better disaster early warnings to minimise human and economic losses. Climate change increases the risk of weather related disasters which are an obstacle to sustainable development,” he said.
The data was compiled by the Hadley Centre of the UK’s Met Office and the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Centers for Environmental Information and the Goddard Institute of Space Studies (GISS) operated by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
Most scientists agree the data indicates that the temperature jump is a trend and not an exception.

Hundreds of scientists sent a letter to lawmakers Thursday warning National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) scientists may have violated federal laws when they published a 2015 study purporting to eliminate the 15-year “hiatus” in global warming from the temperature record.

Those foreign sea levels will not be permitted in Cayman.
In theory according to global warming most of Cayman will be a few feet under sea level in the next 25 years
Great. My long term property investment will become a beach front property by 2041.
Who is really pushing this global warming BS. I know that a lot of people have got rich from it , from the time AL Gore started it .
I blame all the hot air emanating from the Assembly!
When I was working in Israel 20 years ago it was warmer in London at Christmas than it was in Eilat, that year you could ski the streets of Jerusalem in January, March in Eilat was hot and humid with rain and in the UK it snowed in April. Nothing like that has happened since.
I was diving in Key West in February 2003 and it was freezing, the water was 52F – that’s the same temperature as you’ll find off the west coast of England right now.
In the UK they’ve just had the wettest and warmest winter for years but in 2010/11 they had the coldest – where I come from it hit -17C in January 2011.
This isn’t global warming, it’s just shifts in the weather patterns. We’re getting into the Chicken Little syndrome here with people looking for things that aren’t actually there. The problem is that ‘global warming’ has joined the list of things like SARS and bird flu as a growth industry – people are making too much money screaming about global warming to admit it’s just natural changes in the weather.
Perhaps you could explain that to NASA in terms that they might understand. Look at the stupid things that they have to say.
“The difference between weather and climate is a measure of time. Weather is what conditions of the atmosphere are over a short period of time, and climate is how the atmosphere “behaves” over relatively long periods of time.”

and you have how many PHD’s
A degree from the University of Life with a major in knee-jerk republicanism and a minor in believing everything on Fox News.
7:10pm It’s actually PhD or PH.D. and there’s no need for a hyphen in the plural.
Unfortunately it’s the opinions of people boasting those letters after their names but who can’t look beyond the scientific explanations that are the problem.
Sorry had a grey moment here – my 7:52am should have read ‘there’s no need for an apostrophe in the plural’. Not enough coffee in my system!
So right, why can’t these scientists look beyond science when considering scientific issues and instead give more weight to politically and financially motivated gut prejudice?
This ( ” ) is not a hyphen. This ( – ) is a hyphen.
My bad. This ( ‘ ) is not a hyphen.
It is acceptable usage to use an apostrophe in the plural of terms that are comprised of capitalised acronyms.
He meant player haters degree….
King Canute tried it with the tide, it never worked then and it won’t work now. This billion year old planet has had wether cycles for ever. First it was Global Warming now its called Climate Change, an Al Gore discovery.
yep…you believe in a conspiracy of 95% of world scientists????….or maybe they are just wrong?????….zzzzz
keep drinking the oil industry kool-aid…..
As a rule of thumb, I give little weight to the climate change views of a person who cannot spell the word “weather”.
climate change is beyond the grasp of the average caymankind…..
“Annual temperatures have increased for the past four years by a total of 1.2°F,” Chief Meteorological Officer John Tibbetts confirmed. “A similar pattern is observed in Cayman Brac, with 2015 having a slightly lower temperature.”
ROFLMAO!! Temperature is rising every year and Cayman Brac demonstrates a “similar pattern” by having a “slightly lower temperature” B.Y.O.B. (believing your own B.S.)
It is obvious that you dont have a clue about climate change. Scientist says the earth is warming and you expect it to increase by a set amount each year. Thats not how it works.
Someone mentioned earlier that there are cycles and I agree there are. these cycles do have an impact but the concepts of global warming takes these things into consideration. The national weather service maintains 30 year average temperatures and they are increasing not steady but still it goes on.
Well now, you see how very wrong you can be? I know more about climate change than you might imagine. I also have plenty of “clues” about climate change and the hysterics involved in promoting and politicizing of the Anthropogenic Global Warming theory (AGW) ; the theory, that against all best scientific practices, preaches the dogma that catastrophic Global Warming is caused by human activity.
This article ticks all the boxes for how to promote this dogma; including avoiding details of any observed cooling or reduction in the rate of warming. I will also give you a “clue”. Just because you may go outside and experience weather or “climate” every day for years on end does not make you an expert in climatology. No more that walking makes you an expert in gravity and electromagnetism.
My theory is that you and others that promote this dogma care less about warming, human progress and sustainability of human well-being on this planet and a lot more about satisfying your primitive, perverse, insatiable desire to control other people and telling them how to live.
if you know so much you would have realised that one year showing a slight cooling means nothing not when all the others are showing an increase. we are not talking weather we are talking climate.
So we have learned you can Google and then summarise the fantasy ramblings of pro-republican websites. Next week children, intelligent design.
Actually I did not have to google anything. I have 30+ years in climate related roles and a college degree in the matter. So dont pay attention to all that you google.
according to the compass though we don’t have to do anything because cayman can make no difference…….zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
There is nothing we could do, as far as making a dent in the “climate change”. If we are doing it just to say we are doing it, we will still drown in the end. Don’t kid yourself, what the industrial nations produce in pollution will not stop until every dollar is milked out. Then, and only then, will it stop. Until then, we can do all we want and it won’t help. Just know how to swim.
We may not be able to have much effect on climate change and more extreme weather, but we can prepare for it effects in Cayman, which will come, watch those low lying areas
You mean low lying areas like the Cayman Islands
