Premier heads to London with 5 person team
(CNS): Premier Alden McLaughlin leaves for a week-long trip to London on Friday and he will be taking four members of staff and a Cabinet minister with him for what officials said would be a number of “meetings and appearances”. The premier will be delivering an address at the Caribbean Council reception, meeting communication experts for advice on government’s planned merger of its radio, TV and communications.
The delegation, which includes Financial Services Minister Wayne Panton, will also meet with FCO and Treasury officials regarding the question of Cayman’s plans to deal with the issue of ‘beneficial ownership’ for offshore firms.
In a release from his office Wednesday, McLaughlin said the week-long trip to London presented an opportunity to promote Cayman and its offshore sector.
“This gives us yet another opportunity to appear on the world stage to tell of the amazing opportunities available to those who would consider investing in the Cayman Islands,” he said. “It also gives us a chance to highlight Cayman’s position as a major player in the world of international finance and the leading role we continue to play in support of the global agenda on fighting tax evasion and money laundering.”
McLaughlin and the five person delegation will also meet with communication consultants to discuss the ongoing efforts to merge Government Information Services, Radio Cayman and CIGTV, the government’s television channel.
As well as meeting with the group, Friends of Cayman, officials said the team will also meet with business leaders and Lord Foulkes, who, as president of the council, invited McLaughlin to speak at the annual reception at the House of Lords.
The event is scheduled for next Tuesday and officials say more than 300 people will be there, including many MPs and peers, members of the diplomatic corps, a wide range of business leaders and senior officials from the UK government, as well as the overseas territories minister, James Duddridge.
Accompanying the premier and Panton will be Chief Officer Dr Dax Basdeo from the finance ministry and Cabinet Office Policy Analyst Jason Webster, as well as the premier’s senior political adviser, Roy Tatum, and his press secretary, Tammie Chisholm.

I don’t understand why they would need advice to combine those functions. They were previously combined under GIS, which was formerly housed next to Radio Cayman. Just combine the departments – how hard is that???? Do we need advice on how to clean our butts next? Geez. Way to play into the expat belief that we are all stupid without them.
I think that this is the time that we need to show our faces to the Mr Premier in a protest against the minimum wage . This little money would have great effects on people , and I am not sure that it’s only the $6. in the pipeline of this piece of legislation .
That thing in the bathroom of your posh hotel is a bidet not a water fountain you use it to clean yourself not drink from it.
and the silverware, first you use the small fork then the next bigger fork
Do not use clip on tie
do not use the term “Hi Guys” to the ladies
Fist bumps are not as popular as a firm handshake
Put the toilet seat down (raise it first)
don’t forget to tip
don’t use the word UNNA
and please don’t drink to much
A fag is a cigarette not a person
have a safe trip
And do not confuse “to” for “too”.
Gee. Now that post couldn’t be considered condescending at best or bigoted at worst. now could it? Although I do not personally like him, our current Premier does know how to behave in a civilized manner – as do Minister Panton and all members of the current entourage. Implying that Caymanians don’t understand basic etiquette is insulting.
Pure entertainment don’t have a stroke
At least two deadwoods there.
How about Alden and Wayne just keep going east and go visit Mr Li Ka-shing in Hong Kong and thank him for his business, ask if The Cayman Islands Government could be of any service, and ask if he has any other billionaire friends that might want to move their business here.
On the 2&3rd of December 2014 there was overseas meeting in London where a quorum of Caribbean leaders addressed this issue about this company register and they said no. subsequently in February 2015 the Labour leader wrote his threatening letter of intent. My question is why is the Loyal subject Wayne Panton having further discussion about this and has he consulted with his OT’s counterparts prior to his “Meeting” No doubt the details of this “meeting” will be forthcoming just like the other meetings they had.
A five person team? Sounds like a jolly to me!
Isn’t there a conflict of interest somewhere here where Wayne Panton is owner of C3 and is also dealing with matters for communications, tv and radio for the country? Something doesn’t smell right. If it were Mac there would be such an uproar about corruption! How about the tendering process for the concessions in the new airport when you have some junior ministers involved in that and are also restauranteurs or other businesses where there are ministers from large family businesses. I wonder who will get the concessions there?
Communications fall under the purview of the Cabinet Office/Cabinet Secretary not Minister Panton’s.
Sssssure they do.
I hope whoever get the concession stands, they will have a different choice of foods and snacks. Also some better tasting wines.
Its a good thing it was only mac government travelling, this current government says one thing and does the other!! zzzzzzzzzz so not interested in hearing anythign from them
