Kenroy Leonard Rowe

(CNS): A security guard who was on duty at a bar in George Town has been found guilty of stabbing a customer with a flick knife in March last year. Kenroy Leonard Rowe, a Jamaican national who was working at the Energy Bar and Lounge on Shedden Road, was convicted of wounding with intent by a seven member jury following a two-day trial and just over two hours of deliberation. Following the verdict, the judge said it was a serious offence and remanded him in custody ahead of a sentence hearing next month.

The incident was caught on CCTV and there was no question that Rowe had clearly stabbed the customer during an altercation at the bar but he had claimed self-defence. However, the jury of five men and two women were not convinced and found that Rowe had used excessive force when he stabbed Sanchez, who was a patron at the bar. The court also heard that the flick knife which Rowe had pulled from his pocket and lunged at Rowe had been confiscated by him from another customer.

Sanchez, who was at the bar with another man, had punched Rowe after he had attempted to pat him down before he entered the bar. But Rowe, who the court heard was uninjured by the thump to his jaw, responded by pulling out the flick knife and lunging, then stabbing Sanchez in the chest.

The court heard that  Sanchez had sustained very serious injuries when he was stabbed but as a result of the quick actions of a police officer his life was saved as he was rushed to hospital. The man remained in hospital for some four days as a result of internal bleeding on his lungs.

Anyone who actually went to the case and watched the CCTV video would see the security guard was clearly in the wrong. The first act of “Physical” agression was in fact from the security guard. He is someone who is supposed to protect the people but he lost his cool which lead to him stabbing an unarmed person. Simple as that. He would have been found guilty no matter what race or nationality he was.

If he had counter-punched he may have been charged but maybe not and probably not conviceted because the response would not have been “excesive force”. Excesive force is more important than the action. Counterpunch is OK. Counterpunch and kick the guy while’ he’s down? Excesive force. Knife in response to punch? Excesive Force. (Remember, uninjured from the punch, in hospital from the knife. Escessive force.)

The only thing on interest in your comment is the spelling. Much tougher to resolve than the Times Crossword.

This case only highlights the risks and hypocrisy that security guards work under here in Cayman…and the United Kingdom, as well.

They are expected to enforce rules, regulations ans some laws but…

Are given no authority and protection to do so.

They are no more than any other citizen, can carry no weapons or tools for protection and yet have to confront violent people on their jobs.

Even if this security guard had not used a knife and punched this guy back, he would still have been charged with ABH or some other charge of violence…and quite probably convicted as well.

He now loses his freedom as well as any right to hold a security license to work in Cayman…and that conviction goes on his police record and follows him for the rest of his life.

    Exclusion order to follow?!
Or is he a “Caymanian” too?

  8. Anonymous says:

The only reason he’s in prison is because he’s Jamaican. Caymanians are prejudiced!

Isn’t it typical of some to justify their shortcomings by blaming other people. Why is it that some people cannot do no wrong in their own eyes?!!!
He stabbed the man!!! How in the hell do you come up with the theory that its because “Caymanians are prejudiced”??? I assume you meant PREJUDICE.

      • Anonymous says:

Ummh, no, I meant prejudiceD. Like with a “D” on the end. Prejudice is the noun, prejudiced with a “D” on the end is the adjective. Look up the words “noun” and “adjective” in the dictionary for additional details. And yeah, Caymanians are prejudiced – as prejudiced as they come! God-fearing and loving? Tscha man!

Well leave the country if that’s your opinion!

          • Anonymous says:

You want me to leave the country because I have an opinion? You are deluded as the rest of them. Let me describe Caymanians for you in three words: corrupt, deluded, whiners. Question: How many Caymanians does it take to ruin a country. Answer: 25,000+

            • Anonymous says:

Stop hiding behind anonymous and say that in a room full of caymanaians! I dare you.

Make that 25000 + 1 cause you just want to be caymanian too! Why else would you be here

              • Anonymous says:

What exactly are “caymanaians”? Are they related to Caymanians or perhaps a new species of alligators?

            • Anonymous says:

Well your opinion is quite stupid how can you make it seem like all caymanians are all the same? How about if someone told you that your the same like everyone else in your country that your from would you agree on that?Your just being a complete racist d*ckead i bet if you acted like that in your country people wont take your side but you’ll get whats coming for you and if you can say this and that on a computer feel free to do it with your mouth as well!

              • Anonymous says:

Wow, how can anyone discuss anything with someone like you who has never heard of proper grammar and proper punctuation. Obviously your “O” levels didn’t do much for you.

                • tampaguy816 says:

Your the one who is on “0”levels if your acting racist and immature.People with class don’t act the way your acting so who’s the one on “0” levels?Your only acting like that behind a computer why cant you act like that in person? If you can’t say this in public don’t bother to run your mouth!

            • tampaguy816 says:

you are being childish and racist as hell not everyone is the same so please grow up and open your mind or simply relocate somewhere else bub!

      • Anonymous says:

        Agreed

    • Anonymous says:

Oh really now? Don’t be an idiot. He stabbed the man!

      • Anonymous says:

Remember the incident in which the Caymanian man shot the burglar and charges weren’t even pressed? That man wasn’t even attacked. This guy gets attacked yet he is convicted of using excessive force? Like I said, Caymanians walk, Jamaicans get their a$$E$ handed to them.

        • Jah Right says:

The “Caymanian man” who shot the burglar was actually born and raised in Jamaica’ eventually achieving Cayman Status after immigrating here. He is a decent man too but a born Jamaican who still speaks like a Jamaican. So your argument collapses, 12:41.

        • Anonymous says:

Caymanian dis and Caymanian dat. If ya nah like eh, gwan back a yard and prosper there. Oh, wait a minute……

          • Anonymous says:

I’ll take Jamaica over Cayman any day of the week.

            • Anonymous says:

Lol, this the best one yet. Jamaica is beautiful yes, and I love going back there to visit. But make no mistake about it, life is very hard for the overwhelming majority who would LOVE to get to Cayman.

A lot of Jamaicans like to run down Cayman and Caymanians, but yet need both to send money home.

Cayman is a good place, and has been good to me since I left Jamaica 20 years ago. While I will always be proud to be Jamaican, I will not deny that I had to leave, like many many others to carve out a life elsewhere.

Stop the bad habit of categorizing everyone. If the day comes that Caymanians really start hating Jamaicans, and stop employing them, it will be Jamaicans to suffer more so.

I know the truth hurts and offends many, but it is what it is.

        • Anonymous says:

It’s funny of you to sit there and think that you actually know what happened when you in fact, DID NOT see the CCTV footage and WERE NOT in the courtroom to see or make your own verdict based on the evidence presented. I suggest you keep your “prejudiced” opinions to yourself. The only person who’s prejudiced on here is you for having a problem wih ALL Caymanians based on the FEW you may have encountered. And it is not true that if this person were a caymanian he would get off. If he were a caymanian I would expect the same verdict to be given to him. Based on the footage seen in the courtroom. Which I might add, you obviously didn’t watch.

    • Anonymous says:

I agree. If this guy had been Caymanian he would have walked based on self-defense. No jury would have convicted him. Caymanians can barely stand themselves, never mind Jamaicans. What an insufferable country.

      • americaneagle says:

@11:21- are you really that stupid?you shouldn’t live here if you feel that way buddy and no matter what race you are if you do the crime you will have to do the time!

    • Anonymous says:

      So is Jamaicans

  9. Anon says:

And smoking ganga is such a terrible offence, nuh true? Pathetic. This type of violence is always alcohol fueled.

    • Anonymous says:

You sound very ignorant. Obviously if the man was a security guard AT the bar, he couldn’t have been drinking. Therefore; he would have been SOBER when he stabbed the man.
