Off-duty cop nets drunk driver in hit and run

(CNS): A West Bay man has been arrested for leaving the scene of an accident and drunk driving after an off-duty police officer witnessed the 41-year-old driver hit a pedestrian on Reverend Blackman Road, West Bay, Sunday evening. The injured man, who also lives in West Bay, ended up with a broken leg, among other injuries, when he was hit by a green Honda Aspire.

The incident was witnessed by the officer, who was also travelling on the same road. He followed the driver who fled the scene to an address on Gaston Smith Drive, West Bay, and called uniformed patrol officers to the location. The injured pedestrian was taken to the Cayman Islands Hospital in  George Town, where he remains in a stable condition.

Superintendent Adrian Seales commended the efforts of his colleague and his actions in apprehending the driver.

“It is a callous act to hit a pedestrian, a bicyclist or anyone and leave them on the roadside without calling  for help or medical assistance,” he said. “The RCIPS will continue to prosecute drivers, with the help of the community, in bringing  these persons  to  justice.”

The hit and run happened at around 8:35pm Sunday and the matter is now under investigation by uniformed officers from the West Bay Police Station.

Great job RCIP. Sympathies to the pedestrian. Just to be on the safe side, all the pedestrians must make sure to walk on the opposite direction of the traffic so they can see the oncoming traffic. Also the pedestrians must try their best not to wear dark clothing while walking on the road after sunset as it becomes difficult to see dark color at night, especially if the road is poorly lit. It would also assist to wear or carry some reflective stuff when walking after sunset.

The investigation should not have to go much further before the charges are made public. If it is not done and made public in a week, then I think that the investigation officer should be made to step down from his job . The police is always asking for anyone with information about the accident to come forward , here we have a off duty officer with all the details of the accident.

well as far as I know, a Police Officer is OFF DUTY, he/she maybe out of uniform but and off shift but they are still on duty should they see a crime or someone in need of help they should help. So good for that officer. HE/She is one of the good ones I guess. Thank you for doing your job Well Done

That’s right. He might be off duty but he’s still an officer of the law. That is defending the law fulltime and not only on duty.

Good work off-duty RCIPS Officer! Maybe that’s the secret – let RCIPS officers work “off-duty” and they might be more productive!
