Witnesses wanted in year-old teen drowning case
(CNS): UPDATED – The police appeal to the public to find two people who may have seen what happened to 14-year-old Risco Yaris Batten, who died swimming at the beach last year near South Sound Cemetery has paid off. The RCIPS said the couple had come forward following the release of images showing them near the water’s edge with a blue canoe.
Batten was pulled from the sea and CPR efforts by police at the scene were unsuccessful in reviving him.
Following a review of the case detectives believe there were more people in the area on Sunday 29 November who may have information that could help. Police asked for the man and woman to come forward or anyone who knows them to help officers make contact with the couple, who may have been visiting the island.
“Often witnesses may have seen something that they don’t even realize is of significance and this may be the case with this couple,” said Kurt Walton, Deputy Commissioner of Police. “Given the fact that many people are here on island only certain times of year, we are taking the opportunity of the one year anniversary of this incident to try to reach them, in case they have some information that can bring some clarity to this tragic incident.”
Melbourne Batten, Risco’s father, said the year had been one of grief and sadness.
“What could help us most through this difficult time is fully understanding what happened. If you know how to reach the people in these pictures, or if you were there that day, or if you have any other information, please call the police,” he urged.
Detectives can be reached at 936-8746 or at George Town Police Station on 949-4222.

A drone pilot can’t be minding his own business whilst enjoying his device. He then happens to notice what’s taking place and decides to get the horrifying ordeal on video for the evidential value it brings.
For all the people commenting on this talking about how they take picture or drome, He was my little brother who lost is life.
It does not matter how long Risco Batten die, our pain continues until justice is serve.
Until this happen to someone you know or close to you, then you will know what me & my family are going through.

Kerry-Ann, I am sorry for your loss. And I do hope anyone who knows anything, comes forward and speaks to RCIPS. People will oftentimes say careless things, and as you say, until it happens to them… All the best.
Obviously you did not think clearly before you commented. Yes – their child is drowned – there is no bringing him back but if there is was foul play involved that is a different ball game. Put yourself in the father’s shoes – what if it was your child – wouldn’t you want to know if there was more to it
Definitely from a drone… The camera angle is from over the water.
Why is there CCTV videos of the beach? These video pictures look purposefully directed on these folks. Who would be doing this? Creepy, very creepy. Make note that when you go for a nice walk alone on the beach, you are not alone.
The entire Island is hard-wired. Have you not figured that out. There are cameras pointing down every line where water meets sand. Think not, then foolish mind.
These pictures were probably taken by the security camera at the condos next to the cemetery!
Wait CCTV photos at the beach? So if that is the case and these have been released why can’t you publish the photos of the murder suspect? So odd.
They look like still-shots from drone footage. Very creepy.
More likely a perv with a drone but whatever works I suppose.
I feel for the family but what’s the difference. He drowned…..it’s a year ago……what are witnesses needed for . To confirm the obvious.
9.54pm What are you afraid of?
I am not concerned where the pictures came from.
My concern is why has it taken over 12 months for the Really cops incompetent police (RCIP) to release the photos?
People want to help but no one remembers that far back without being asked sooner.
I feel so bad for the family. The officer dealing with this should not be a police. No excuse why the photos could not have been release sooner.
Who took these pictures? Where did they come from? Why are they only being released now?
