Over 1,000 new voters sign up for 2017
(CNS): Canvassing efforts by the Elections Office have already boosted the electoral roll by 1,052 people, officials have confirmed. The new voters were added to the register following the first phase of canvassing in September. Enumerators went door to door in all districts except George Town during the month. Canvassing in now underway in George Town until the end of November, so many more names are likely to be added to the list, which now stands at over 19,500 names after the new names were added and more 30 names were removed.
“These additions and removals bring the total number of voters in the Cayman Islands to 19,515,” Elections Supervisor Wesley Howell said.
The highest number of new voters registered so far was in Bodden Town, where 538 were added to the list, followed by another 359 in West Bay, Deputy Supervisor of Elections Sheena Glasgow said. Among the smaller populated districts, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman had the most with 83 new voters, followed by North Side with 50 and East End with 32.
Canvassers also recorded a total of 2,364 changes to entries in the voters list, covering updates to name, occupation or street address for electors already registered, Glasgow added. The largest number of changes was recorded in Bodden Town, with 1,112. West Bay followed with 681 changes. Cayman Brac and Little Cayman was next with 339 changes, followed by East End with 118 and North Side with 114.
As well as new voters, 32 names were removed from the electors list; 22 of those people have died, two declared of unsound mind and eight others have been sentenced to 12 months or more in prison.
Glasgow urged people in the capital to prepare for visits from the election team.
“With the focus now on canvassing George Town, we are asking residents to be prepared for the enumerator’s visit,” she said. “This includes having their supporting documentation ready for persons registering for the first time as well as for those already registered who may need to submit name changes. We ask gated communities to allow the enumerator access to facilitate completion of the canvassing of residences within.
Anyone who wishes to vote in the 2017 May general Election, the first ever in Cayman under the system of ‘one man, one vote’ in 19 single member constituencies, must register before the end of December 2016 to make the list in time for the ballot. Anyone registering after the end of December will miss their chance as their names will not be cleared in time as it still takes the elections office more than three months to clear and confirm names.

Eight people prepared to admit that they had been in jail….you think that the Elections Office would have caught these guys already by doing a cross match between the prison records and the electoral role, but why use other government departments’ records when you can pay part timers to go and knock on doors. What is really noteworthy is that whilst they added a 1000 people, they only removed 32. Only 22 people that have passed away?
