Tropical Storm Earl, Tuesday 2 August

(CNS): The National Hurricane Centre in the US confirmed just before lunchtime Tuesday that the tropical system passing through the Caribbean has become the 5th storm of the season. At around 11am local time, Tropical Storm Earl was around 215 miles south-southeast of Grand Cayman, with maximum sustained winds of 45mph and higher gusts, moving at around 22mph. Local forecasters said the storm would pass south of the Cayman Islands supporting fresh to strong winds along with rough seas as it moves through the Cayman area. An increase in showers and thunderstorm activity is also expected as Earl moves west by tomorrow morning.

Forecasters at the NHC called for a decrease in forward speed of TS Earl over the next couple of days as the storm heads towards the north coast of Honduras. With the storm on a track for the Yucatan Peninsula, the NHC said it was expecting some additional strengthening before it reaches there. Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 80 miles from the centre.

According to the local forecast, the storm will bring cloudy skies with a 60% chance of showers in Cayman today and 80% tonight, which may become heavy at times locally. Seas will be rough with wave heights of 4 to 6 feet.  Small craft should seek safe harbour and remain overnight as the storm passes.

    CUC:

“CUC wishes to advise its customers that its hurricane preparations plan has been initiated in anticipation of the possible effects of Tropical Storm Earl. As a result CUC’s payment offices at the Caribbean Plaza and the Administration Building on North Sound Road will be closed this afternoon at 1:30pm.”

Its all work, work, work over there. Watch out for sunstroke boys.

The NHC was very slow in sending recon into the storm; too late for Jamaica. I would like to see the NWS being more independent of the NHC and stepping up when they see a system that is likely to impact our country. Not denigrating them. It was apparent more that 24 hours ago that Earl had formed.

We got lucky this time. Kudos to the NWS for calling for a TS watch prior to the naming of Earl.

While you can look at satellite pictures there is much more required in the field of meteorology.

Hurricane hunter was being sent the day before but broke down.

I just came off a plane and we need to give our pilots a bump in salary, they do a superior job day after day and with a small runway in dicey winds.
