Police round up car thief suspect after high-speed chase
(CNS): A police pursuit of what was suspected to be a rogue driver ended up with officers bagging a suspected car thief on Thursday night. Just before midnight, officers on radar patrol stopped a red Honda Civic driving along the West Bay Road using lights and siren. The driver was alone in the car but as the police approached the Honda on foot, the driver sped away at a high speed towards West Bay along Esterley Tibbetts Highway. Officers then followed the speeding car, which they said was being driven in a dangerous manner, and at Yacht Drive roundabout the driver lost control and stalled the car.
The driver, who turned out to be a 26-year-old man from West Bay, got out of the car and started running toward the West Bay Road in the direction of Tiki Beach but he was rounded up following a foot pursuit by the police, who arrested him on suspicion of dangerous driving, resisting arrest and DUI.
As the culprit was being booked into custody officers, suspecting the car had been stolen contacted the 911 Communication Centre and confirmed that it was reported stolen from the parking lot of a George Town bar earlier that night. As a result, the West Bay man was also arrested for theft, damage to property and driving offences. He is currently in custody.
