PPM won’t help UPM with controversial changes to NCA
(CNS): A spokesperson for the PPM has told CNS the party is standing by their position that the current minority government, which they see as merely a caretaker administration, should not be bringing any contentious pieces of legislation to parliament ahead of the election. While the Progressives support both the idea of a cruise port and also want to amend the National Conservation Act they won’t support the draft bills that the UPM submitted to parliament for the meeting set for 30 January.
With at least five of the other independent MPs taking the same position it now seems that the two bills are doomed to failure. I they make it to the order paper they will provide nothing more than a opportunity for political posturing by MPs and a signal to their donors of their forthcoming election campaigns.
“Nothing has changed since we first said and repeated that we would not support any contentious business to be brought by a caretaker government,” the Progressives spokesperson told CNS in the wake of the release of the draft conservation act amendment bill on New Year’s Eve.
The party has said that the UPM is now a lame duck government and should not be placing any bills before parliament that are controversial.
“Changes to the National Conservation Act are controversial and should not be introduced by the minority government,” the PPM stated, adding that the party even opposes having the bills placed on the order paper at all and will make that opposition known during the meeting of the House Business Committee before the meeting starts.
If that fails the members will vote against the bills in Parliament the spokesperson confirmed.
As a result the current UPM administration led by Premier Julianna O’Connor-Connolly will not be able to steer these bills through. With just five cabinet members bound by collective responsibility and only two backbench MPs, one of which, CNS understands is unlikely to support these bills either the Government has no hope of getting the draft bills passed.
It appears that the decision to present the bills is largely about providing a free election platform for the members who will want to show their credentials to existing and potential donors who support cruise berthing and the wealthy developers who have been behind the efforts to gut the conservation act. This potential opportunity to make political capital appears worth the embarrassment of defeat.
Both the idea of a cruise berthing facility and the conservation laws are almost certainly to line up as campaign issues for this year’s general election alongside the bread and butter public concerns relating to the cost of living, the housing and transport crisis, affordable health care and immigration reform. Almost every MP who contested the election in 2021 be it on a party platform or as an independent campaign on those issues last time around but none of these critical issues have been addressed over the last four years.

Or at least not until the other side agrees on the number they’re thinking about. The ACC needs to have visibility on the curious Cabinet preoccupations with making louse developer dreams come true. These waiver and land forfeiture deals don’t help the people of Cayman, nor do they contribute to CIG Revenue…that leaves just one other way this makes sense…
Pretty simple strategy for the opposition – vote against it now, then get the campaign money to vote for it next time!
Mr Dart will not be happy about this.
I am sure that the money people were consulted and have approved any public statements
“I don’t like the sound of it…”
Oompa loompa lompity doo…
sorry. Boomer humour.
What if the PPM members don’t attend Parliament during the vote?
who would notice? Don’t you think they all should be paid by participation? Can you imagine making more than $6,000 per public appearance?
And they won’t ever because they aren’t getting back in. Vote smart in 2025 Cayman as it will be our last chance to make this right
The next election is right around the corner. Instead of blasting off about every one we need to settle down and try to figure out who to cast our votes for. It is slim pickings so far but I believe the majority seems to be kind of saying that the present UPM group needs to be rejected next time around. The only other choice that has confirmed that they will be a contender is the PPM. Hopefully they will attract competent persons to step forward, run and get us back on track. Perhaps other groups will emerge so that there will be others to choose from but so far that seems to be underwhelming.
I dislike PPM as much as is possible but, well done. I whole heartedly agree that no controversial legislation should be allowed to be passed by this current regime.
They won’t help UPM accomplish it because they want full credit for it themselves. They want to ensure their Dart/FCCA/merchant family handlers are fully aware that selling out Cayman is a PPM accomplishment.
Why the dummmest son always placed as a political Stooge!
Pray Tell now.
WHY did All you jokers have all that fake LA debate last month, but did NOT tell us about the Dart swap of Dump Crap for Pristine Barkers Beach?!!
I agree!
It is daft for the current UPM to bring these bills now, its a sorry stubborn form of resistance that reeks of Kenneth Bryan. Leave these major decisons for when Wayne Panton resumes the Premiership. He is the protector of the environment and will ensure that the development of the Eastern Districts is brought to an abrupt end. We dont need it in Bodden Town, East End and North Side.
These are unfortunately just people who think they know politics and feel they want to represent their districts and people. When or if they get voted into office they actually have no clue how to run anything. The whole country has been run like this since it began and look where it is now? Look. Open your eyes. Walk outside at night i dare you. Go to a bar with your bling on why not? Why’s. Because you cant. Caymanians cant buy homes or get jobs because their so called leaders would rather have permit holders on island pushing up the population with cheap unskilled workers brings crime. Over crowding. Robberies, shootings. Murders on the road in cars they are not skilled enough to drive. Open your eyes cayman , open your eyes.
u will help the billionaires instead! ZZZZZZ
Thanks Joey! Do not dwell on whatever you might have said and done/ or not done in the past and go forward with what is best for the Cayman Islands and its’s people. There is not one politician in the entire world who don’t regret and question their own decisions in the past. The way forward should be doing the best for our island home. The land space is not getting any bigger, too many acreage has been sold and badly developed without asking oneself what is being left for our people. Many of our younger and not so young persons are perplexed at the state of our homeland and wonder if or when will they be able to own and occupy their share of this 2×4 Rock. many are working in good jobs, savings their money but still the future looks very bleak for them. Please I implore you and the rest of the Progressives, think about our people, please remember we can only accommodate a finite number of people. It is almost too late but by not voting for these insane bills is a good start. All political parties, groups and affiliations go through changes over the years but, all have been set up and run by imperfect people, we are all imperfect but right now is the time that the Progressives can and must start to shine again. There will be a lot of naysayers ; everyone will have their stories to tell but if you , the Progressives, can get your slate of qualified, honest, eloquent, smart candidates together there is no other group out there who can do better. Please make it worth my /our effort to go to the polls to vote on Election Day. There is no place for mediocrity, there is too much at risk .
How can Julie, Dwayne and Kenny go back to PPM after this public slap down?
Same way PPM will absolutely accept McKeeva with open arms next election should it be the difference between them being in power or not. None of these scum have any integrity. The only one that had any semblance of it was told to step down by the rest.
The introduction of this Bill that will likely never come to a vote is all political theater staged to encourage cash from the development cabal and to pacify the gullible in our electorate.
Desperate pandering by PPM pretending to have principles
Who is the phantom “spokesperson for the ppm”?
The leader of party should be brave enough to own the decisions
Grogg da Ork Weighs In: “Oi, Cayman’s Govmint is a WAAAGH! O’ Nuffin’!”
‘Ere we go again, ladz! Grogg da Ork, yer proppa tourist wiv a war buggy an’ a bazooka, has been keepin’ an eye on dis Cayman govmint madness. Dere’s roads dat look like race tracks, a dump deal dat got krumped harder dan a Squig in a Nob fight, an’ a govmint battlin’ between Ork-style chaos (UPM) an’ Tyranid-style schemin’ (PPM). Wot a zoggin’ mess! Let’s break it all down proppa Ork-style.
Da Roads: WAAAGH! on Wheels
First up, yer roads is a zoggin’ battlefield! Dis so-called “safety campaign” ended wiv over 150 crashes in two weeks. Dat ain’t safety—that’s a race track wivout da fun bits!
• Speed Freaks Everywhere:
Yer humies drive like Orks wivout choppas, leggin’ it down da highways wiv no clue where da brakes are. If dis is a safety campaign, I’d hate to see da danger zone.
• Broken Buggy Blues:
Heard a tale ‘bout a humie wiv a busted disc brake sittin’ in da middle o’ da road, an’ da humie copz just left it dere! Wot kinda zoggin’ enforcement is dat? Even Orks know ya clear da path fer more krumpin’!
• More Dakka, Less Brakka:
Yer humie buggies is goin’ too fast (dakka) an’ fallin’ apart (brakka). Fix yer zoggin’ wheels before ya hit da road, ya gitz!
Da Dump Deal Dat Got Dumped
Now, let’s talk about dat George Town landfill—da biggest pile o’ Brakka on da island, an’ not just ‘cause it’s a dump. Dis mess started wiv da PPM an’ got even worse wiv da UPM.
• Da PPM’s Half-Baked Plan:
Da PPM made a deal to clean up da dump, but dey didn’t think it through. Sure, dey signed a contract, but did dey follow up? Nah, dey just shouted, “We’z fixin’ it!” an’ hoped fer da best.
• Da UPM’s Krump-It-All Approach:
Den da UPM came in an’ said, “Nah, we don’t want dis deal!” So dey zogged it off wivout followin’ through, racking up penalties fer da bidder while da dump still stinks worse dan a Squig pen. Typical Ork move: smash first, think later.
• Penalties Fer Nuffin’:
Now yer govmint’s gotta fork over a pile o’ teeth (money) fer cancellin’ da deal, an’ da dump’s still dere, smellin’ like failure.
Da UPM vs. Da PPM: WAAAGH! vs. Hive Mind
Dis govmint ain’t just messin’ up on roads an’ dumps—they’re battlin’ like Orks an’ Tyranids fer control, an’ da people o’ Cayman are stuck in da middle.
• Da UPM:
Loud, chaotic, an’ reckless. Dey bash through policies wivout numbers or plans, hopin’ noise will fix everyfing. Spoiler alert: it don’t.
• Da PPM:
Quiet, sneaky, an’ manipulative. Dey act like Genestealerz, infiltratin’ systems an’ underminin’ democracy while pretendin’ to be da good guys.
Grogg’s Proppa Plan fer Dis WAAAGH!
Oi, Cayman, if ya wanna stop dis madness, ya need a proppa Ork plan:
1. Fix Da Roads:
Clear da broken buggies, slow da speed freaks, an’ make yer highways safe fer humies who ain’t tryin’ to live like Orks on a race track.
2. Sort Da Dump:
Stop pointin’ fingers an’ fix da zoggin’ mess. Read da fine print, renegotiate da deal, an’ get rid o’ da stink—proppa-like!
3. Stop Krumpin’, Start Thinkin’:
UPM, PPM—yer both actin’ like gitz. Work together fer once, or step aside fer someone who knows how to krump responsibly.
4. Listen to Yer People:
Yer humies is tired o’ da noise an’ da schemin’. Stop treatin’ Cayman like a battlefield an’ start listenin’ to wot da people need.
Grogg’s Final Wordz
Dis island’s got potential, but yer leaders is too busy krumpin’ an’ schemin’ to see it. If ya wanna move forward, ya need more thinkin’, less Brakka, an’ definitely less Dakka. And fer Gork’s sake, leave da mangroves alone!
For Cayman! For Justice! For More Dakka Where It Counts and Less Brakka Everywhere Else!
Grogg’s off to enjoy da beach now—lemme know when ya need me to sort out da next mess! WAAAGH!
No offense intended; I get what you’re trying to do. If find this character you’ve created to be annoying. I didn’t thumb you down, because I get the purpose. If you are lucky, people will disagree with me and support your position. I will hope for that.
The idiots trying to force this through are totally shameless. I hope they all get kicked out.
The Bill signaled the UPM’s unsurprising true colours to their overlords and will no doubt guarantee substantial ‘campaign contributions’.
However, none of our corrupt politicians want to see this Bill get onto the order paper at this point. There is less money for them if it gets onto the order paper.
If the Bill got onto the order paper then they would have to vote on the Bill which would show their colours to the public as well as the development cabal. The PPM certainly do not want to show their true colours in relation to gutting the NCA as it would likely lose them votes from the electorate.
If our corrupt politicians collude to keep the Bill off the order paper and leave the NCA in an uncertain position going forward, then every corrupt politician can demand a ‘campaign contribution’ premium for their votes in the next Parliament.
They are corrupt but not all of them are entirely stupid.
Good points – no doubt the UPM and the PPM consulted on this to ensure that the Bill will not come to a vote.
Don’t even read any one of their same lying crap!
I will be happy to see this Bill fail, if it does.
However we must all note that the Bill, which was designed and approved by the development cabal before being released, indicates the absolute minimum that the development cabal is expecting our corrupt politicians to enact in the immediate aftermath of the April election.
The only hope for Cayman is to ensure that corrupt politicians are not elected – a tall order with the current level of corruption and the absence of any meaningful campaign finance rules.
Progressives are the it takes one to know one party in terms of last minute deals.
Remember the dump deal with Dart they rammed through that cost $100 plus million.
Pure chicanery.
Of course the equally scheming PPM are mute on the topic of land swaps and other secret gifts for DART, all stemming from their last actions in power. Rather than end this fiasco parliament, they quietly contribute to its longevity for their donor.
Thank Goodness! Well fckin done! Have a backbone for the first time in the last decade and hold Jujus feet to the fire.
I can sleep well tonight.
Joey is so full of $hit!
Please tell ppm that we see thru their games and pretenses. They not different from the current Julie, McKeeva, Bryan mess running the show.
Joey Hew and PPM are true frauds and playing politicks pretending to be different or better than UPM. Juliana, Jon Jon, Kenny will al join the ppm in time for campaign season. None of the PPM, UMP and elitists independents can be trusted to do the right thing for the country.
The PPM, who originally brought this law, did so without even reading it when it was brought to the House. Don’t take my word for it, go back a watch the proceedings. Wayne Panton had the money to fund the then upcoming election campaigns. Therefore, all PPM members knew that if they wanted any funds from him…. the better fall inline and vote yes for the bill. Now it’s law. Joey Hew is pandering and trying to navigate those mind field as he is more worried about loosing votes. CAYMANIANS, remember I told you. It’s about the land! Who has it, who wants it, and they will do anything to “encourage” you to sell it. You all up in the eastern districts can’t even get a need road. Why??? The western side of Grand will get a throes road before you all in the east get a proper one. And it will be done under the guise of “mitigation” or “resiliency”. Once you all have sold your land in the east, for pittance, watch and see how quickly things will change. Just watch.
You’re probably right
