Radar out of action for annual maintenance
(CNS): The Cayman Islands National Weather Service said the Kearney Gomez Doppler Weather Radar will be down for scheduled annual maintenance from today, 4 December. Once the radar is cleared to resume service, the public will be informed, officials said, thanking the community for their continued support and understanding during this maintenance period. Officials did not say how long the machine, which has been plagued with problems ever since it was installed, will be offline.

Look no further than the name ?
Well Done CIG. Shut down the weather radar 3 weeks before Christmas. Chances are nothing will get done after December 13 until Mid-January. If it does it will be at a huge cost. Good Luck seeing this online before March.
I am sure at some point at least 1 department involved in fixing this will have a full day off for a Christmas party. Always amazes me everywhere else in the world Christmas parties are done after hours. Not on Cayman. Wonder how much the CIG will spend in total on all the Christmas parties??
This is the only weather Radar in the world that goes offline for months at a time. Must have been one of the newest models that are not supported any longer.
Good job CIG. Let’s shut this down for maintenance 2 weeks before Christmas. Its either going to cost an arm and a leg in overtime our nothing will happen from December 13 to Mid January.
I am sure what ever departments involved in fixing this will have at least 1 full working day off for a Christmas party. Anywhere else in the world if you have a Christmas party it’s done after hours. Not here on Cayman.
The problem is not the system but the result of poor management of the NWS.
I’m genuinely amazed they didn’t decide to do maintenance in the middle of hurricane season. Just sell it, total waste of time.
This piece of crap would look great on top of the dump.
Hasn’t worked a day in its life. Never before has something been so aptly named, except maybe the Linford Pierson Highway.
Lol
Let’s just sell it.
Its always broken, no news here
See you in a few years like normal. I do wonder what the social welfare recipients, sorry I mean employees of that department do with the rest of their spare time?
Annual Maintenance, meaning all year!
It’s funny how something that was only up and running for around 6 months is now down for yearly maintenance. Sigh
piece of crap…
its a massive white elephant anyway…totally not needed.
but we do live in wonderland…
I find it very useful particularly as I work on the water. I don’t know about you but I like to know when I need to bring a rainjacket or umbrella.
Agreed! Use it whenever it works to determine if I should wash my car during rainy season and when to go out and run errands to see if there is a break in the weather.
Perpetual maintenance, not working more often than working. Reminds me of my gardener. I have to get out there before he shows up to clear the flower beds and after he has left to do the finishing up like cleaning the flower beds and under the hedge where he blew the leaves.
