Firearm and magazines recovered on 30 May 2024

(CNS): Mitchell Chean Ebanks (56) from West Bay pleaded guilty on Friday to the possession of a sub-machine gun, high-capacity magazine and 29 rounds of ammunition. When Ebanks appeared in Grand Court Friday via video link, he admitted having a prohibited 9mm Luger Glock 17 handgun fitted with an automatic sear and a high-capacity extended magazine when police raided his home in Rennie Ebanks Road in May.

Ebanks is due to be sentenced on 25 October. Because he was charged under the Firearms Act before recent changes to the law were implemented, he is facing a minimum seven-year term. The Fire Arms Amendment Bill (2024) raised the minimum term to ten years with an admission of guilt.

A woman who was arrested at the same time as Ebanks has not been charged in relation to the firearm.

No need for guns in Cayman this is ridiculous! Not long ago iabout 2014 there was lighthearted news articles like lime shortage on Seven Mile Beach causing an “issue” with ordering Coronas at Royal Palms and not getting a lime with your beer. I miss those days instead of reading weekly crimes violence robberies…

It feels worth nothing that in 2014 Caymanians weren’t outnumbered 2:1 or more. One has to wonder if there is any correlation to the throngs of imported impoverished, and the skyrocketing crime. Hmmmm.

Good on you Mitchell to admit your responsibility. May you use your time to better yourself. Let those without sin cast the first stone.

tip of the iceberg. the next gang war that kicks off in Cayman is going to expose how truly out-manned and out gunned the RCIPS is.

What is a “Truman Bodden weapon”?

      • Anonymous says:

He meant Ed Bush but is too stupid to know it. For the definition of a “Truman Bodden weapon” you’d have to ask the LYB staff, though I understand it to be much smaller than that depicted here.

Lock him up and toss the key over the drop-off. Send a harsh message to all these wannabe thugs.

false! would fall under a machine pistol at most. its simply a glock with a modified mag.
if I put 35 inch rims on my honda civic does that make it a truck ?

But its not just a hi capacity mag; it has an auto sear. Cyclic rate of 1200 rounds a minute – an M60 machine gun only fires at 500 to 600 rounds. So yeah – its not a machine gun – way higher rate of fire. And in many ways way more dangerous – controlling recoil on that….

I mean, for a car that is called a Civic, it’s somewhat ironic a lot owners are anti-social a***holes.

These guns are even illegal in gun loving USA. Automatic firing glocks with extended magazines are not even close to being allowed to legally own. the fire rate is around 1200 rounds per minute which essentially does make it a sub machine gun.

He is a drug addict, obviously holding it for someone else.

I have no sympathy for anyone caught with a gun, so I will not advocate for any reduced sentence for him.

The main reason for my posting here is another court case that I cannot find on CNS, and that was the bartender coming into Cayman who was caught and fined for bringing in lots of drugs. Did she get to keep her job and continue with her side hustle? I never saw any mention of a deportation order.

For future reference, it is a submachine gun.

The way this Glock was refitted with an altered sear, and therefore fits the classic definition of a submachine gun — that is a magazine-fed automatic carbine designed to fire handgun cartridges.
