More traffic trouble ahead for George Town drivers
(CNS): Work on the George Town Revitalisation Initiative is now expected to cause delays in the business district area of the capital until December following a decision to combine phases 3 and 4 of the work. The next step in the project, which has been ongoing for several years and has several more to go, begins next week, and the relevant traffic diversions are expected to be in place well into December.
To accommodate the construction work during this next phase, a traffic diversion will be implemented from Edward Street to Main Street. Officials said commuters are advised to plan their routes accordingly and anticipate possible delays during this period. Pedestrians using the George Town Post Office are also advised to proceed with care when accessing their boxes, as construction fencing will be put up inside the walkway.
While officials have not detailed the work in this combined phase, they said the merging of these phases is expected to streamline the project’s timeline, minimise disruptions and enhance the overall efficiency of the revitalization process. According to a press release, the work will focus on “significant infrastructure enhancements, including the installation of external light posts”.
This long-running project was designed to improve “the infrastructure and aesthetic appeal of George Town”, officials have said, “ensuring it remains a vibrant and accessible hub for residents and visitors alike”. However, to date, the spruce-up does not appear to have had a positive effect on the capital, which is still seeing an exodus of larger companies to locations such as Camana Bay and many supporting businesses such as restaurants and coffee shops closing down.
The public is urged to stay informed about the traffic diversions and follow the recommended routes to ensure safety and ease of travel. Regular updates will be provided through the GTRI’s social media channels.

This project is a complete mess, taking forever, no end in sight, digging up the same areas over and over again, causing traffic chaos, blocking access to the Central Post Office. Whoever came up with this chaotic plan should be put in the stocks so we can all express our outrage.

I can’t remember the last time I actually stopped in GT. Why would you? There’s nothing there of any interest. Fiddling around with the roads and pavements isn’t going to change that. Even if there was a reason to go there, there’s nowhere to park.
As you get out your car there’s drugged up homeless people running you down for money and food. It’s ridiculous what’s allowed to go on there and the police station is in the area.

Part of the upgrades is to remove 16 parking spots on Main St and replace them with 3 parking spots.

“Downtown” GT is dead. Cheap, blocky or faux colonial-style buildings from the 70s and 80s, no restaurants or nightlife, and finding parking is a frustrating nightmare. Really, just jewelry and cheap souvenir shops, meant for disappointed cruise shippers.
(Not sure how the OneGT hotel/condo development will fare. I never thought it would even go ahead but its actually approaching topping out!)

Tenants that have upgraded by moving out, or gone out of business, will not be coming back. The CIG is compounding remaining local landlord nightmares by executing yet another thinly veiled FCCA destination plan that nobody locally asked for.

The civil service killed GT. They actively prevented mixed use development, including housing, for decades.

bus is used pretty loosely. it’s a bunch of vans. sure they charge a fare and mostly follow a route but even that can vary and there is no reliable schedule and they just stop wherever. it seems like it’d public transportation but it gives off vibes of people just driving around to scrape money together for themselves rather than being paid a salary out of the public purse
