Two Honda Fits crash early Sunday, one driver arrested

| 25/08/2024 | 48 Comments

(CNS): Three people were injured when two Honda Fits collided on the Esterley Tibbetts Highway near the Kimpton Resort shortly after midnight on Sunday. The police said investigations indicate that one car was travelling along the ETH towards West Bay when the other, travelling in the opposite direction, crossed the median and collided with the first Honda. The driver of the second car was arrested on suspicion of DUI.

The police did not say if the three people injured included one or both drivers. They said their injuries were serious but non-life threatening, and two of them have since been released from hospital.

The roadway was temporarily closed while police conducted their investigations but reopened shortly before 3:00am.

Anyone who witnessed this collision or has any information relating to this incident is asked to call 911 or the West Bay Police Station on 949-3999.

The carnage will continue until morale improves.

Stay off the roads past sundown during the week and beware at all times on weekends and holidays, lest an idiot crashes into you.

And any time between 6 am and 9am. that’s when all the qualified F1 drivers are on their way to team headquarters. At least assume they are, what with their F1 style brake lights etc. Heediots.

Honestly, lay off the demonisation of the Honda Fit. It just happens to be very popular on our roads, and that’s that.

All occupants survived a head-on crash. Indeed that’s a plus-point for the Fits.

If anything, the lowered old Honda CL7s and EKs with deep tint and the seats laid back horizontally warrant more raised eyebrows.

Correct – the Cayman Car-Tel of large garage owners are bent on stopping the ordinary working man and woman of the Cayman Islands from importing such economical, fuel efficient, reliable cars.

They have a number of willing, usefull idiots, supporting their cause.

Arrested for DUI? Safe to say the driver wasn’t “John-John” then.

These silly rabbits haven’t caught on yet that once you get too drunk to drive in Cayman, you take a Bird scooter and ride home instead? You know, for safety reasons.

Because they are very obviously involved in a seriously disproportionate number of serious crashes.

1 out of 10 cars registered in the Cayman Islands is a Honda Fit. They put far more miles on the roads than any other type of car. Your point is very hard to defend.

Moreover, please note that despite this being a serious head-on crash … everyone is alive. Surely, that’s a testament to the Fit’s positive safety record, if anything.

They are involved in FAR more than 1/10 fatal accidents. The point stands just fine.

1 in 10 car on the road and 1 in every 2 deaths. Disproportionate. The car is junk and driven by mostly terrible drivers.

Lame insults don’t change the maths. I’ve always imported my own cars, perfectly simple and no need to pay the usual Cayman premium. Now back to Hondas, they suck and the people who drive them suck too. The accident and death statistics prove it but anyone with eyes already knows it to be true.

      • Anonymous says:

Honda accords too. There was a comment some while back on CNS that listed all the road deaths in Cayman for the prior year and something like 12 out of 13 of them were Hondas.

          It’s not rocket science!

Its becasue they are the most prevelent car/make on island.

Also, due to their affordability, reliability and fuel economy, younger drivers tend to buy them. If Land Rover Defenders/Chevy Tahoes/ Ford F250s etc were affordable etc., early to mid-20 year olds woiuld buy them as well and they would be involved in crashes.

Honda (any Japaneese vehicle) is a perfectly good brand.

The Japaneese economy is the third largest in the world and 1st/2nd in car manufacturing – for a reason!

They make up 20% of the cars on island and they are involved in 90% of the deaths. You’re right, it’s not rocket science. The fits are unsafe and the brand is popular with idiots who have watched too much fast and furious.

Obviously. I’ll wager 100% of the drivers killed by their own actions on our roads have never had a real driving license from Europe or North America.

My favorite site this weekend was an old Mazda pickup truck with business graphics for a tire business, driving along Shamrock Road. Broken light clusters with no brake lights working, this was in addition to no license plates, and actual parts of the bodywork flapping in the wind.

Guessing that in this case RCIPS either breathalyzed the driver or managed to persuade the hospital to take a blood sample. Funny how that doesn’t always happen.

I wish those injuted a full and speedy recovery.

…..at least they weren’t two (government issued) Chevy Tahoes……then the damage would have been really off the charts.

Those, gas guzzling, humongous SUVs are designed to be driven in the USA (as Right Hand Drives), not in the Cayman Islands.
