Migrants evacuated during fire at Fairbanks centre
(CNS): Police are investigating a fire at the Customs and Border Control Detention Centre at Fairbanks on Monday. CBC said it started at about 1:00pm and the eight migrants housed there were evacuated from the building while the Cayman Islands Fire Service extinguished the blaze.
Officials said an assessment is being carried out to determine the extent of the damage. However, there was significant smoke inside the facility, so the migrants are not expected to return there until tomorrow. They also said the migrants would be relocated to temporary accommodation but did not indicate where that would be.
It was confirmed that no one was hurt due to the fire, which is now under investigation by police, implying that arson is suspected. Migrants have previously started fires at the facility, either by accident or through protest.
