Police still alarmed by boozed up drivers

Cayman News Service(CNS): Six drivers were arrested over the weekend after they were found to be drunk behind the wheel. Four of the six men and women were twice over the legal limit and one was arrested after a midnight collision on the West Bay Road involving another sober driver. The other drunk drivers were arrested after they had been stopped for other traffic violations. Despite the persistent amount of drinking and driving on local roads, police said they were still shocked by the level of drunkenness they encountered between Friday and Sunday.

“We are alarmed at the level of inebriation of some of the drivers arrested this weekend, which makes a collision almost inevitable.” said Inspector Ian Yearwood of the Traffic and Roads Policing Unit. “We are just thankful that that we were able to stop some of these drivers when we did, and that there were no serious injuries. However, we cannot continue on this present path. Remember, the life you save may be your own.”

Of the six DUI arrests made, one was just after midnight on Sunday, 13 January, when a 28-year-old woman from George Town, who was driving a Honda Civic, was arrested after a crash on the West Bay Road. Officers conducting patrols in the area had come upon the scene of the smash just south of Seven Mile Public Beach, which also involved a BMW. The drivers were breath tested, and while the driver of the BMW was given the all clear, the woman gave a reading of 0.277%. almost three times over the legal limit. She was later granted bail.

All of the other drivers, including another three with blood alcohol content of over twice the legal limit, were arrested after they were stopped by police for speeding and other traffic offences.

    free solution:
    allow buses to run late
    introduce uber/lyft asap
    deregulate taxi industry
    increase punishment for DUI’s

will cig do anything.?….of course not.
cig should be sued for negligence…they have blood on their hands for protecting the existing rubbish taxi cartel.

As long as taxi prices remain exorbitant, and nighttime buses are unavailable, don’t be alarmed

How about get the taxi fare list from the driver himself and no one can cheat you. If im not mistaken all fares are for up to 3 people. Or you can just call the main taxi number like 777 7777 and they wont lie over the radio. They most likely will if you call their personal line.

Though its absence is never an excuse to DUI, and wouldn’t necessarily be any cheaper than existing, smartphone app transportation services would add an extra layer of convenience, security, eliminate payment issues, and motivate 5 -star experiences from both drivers and passengers.

Implementation would be easy, and should have support from DoT, CITA, Chamber, as well as hotel/tourism and business stakeholders.

For example, the Curb Mobility Platform, used in many major cities (including NYC Yellow Cabs) would use existing Taxi fleet, equipping them each with a simple GPS tracker so everyone can manage their expectations. http://gocurb.com

Where are the meters in the taxis? Why wasn’t flex or uber allowed? Rhetorical questions. It’s a huge part of the problem when you can get affordable and reliable rides home. Some people will drink and drive no matter what… but the majority will stop when they know they aren’t being gouged in the wallet or given crappy service.

Crappy attitude more like. If you live over 10 miles away from your drinking hole, that is the equivalent distance of a cross-town airport run in most major urban centers. Your fare, in any city you want to name, using Uber or any service, will be around $50. If you think meters are going to cheapen that fare, you are dreaming. You could ride share now if you had friends. None of these sad “convenience-based” excuses grant you the authority to drive around drunk.

Ride share, Seriously? Have you lived here long? I tried that and they rate the cabbie gave was $75, then when I got out of the car he proceeded to charge and additional $75 for the 2nd person and another $75 for the 3rd person. Meters will help with this. one rate, one meter running. Even if the meter is stopped and started again it begins at $0.

There is no where in the world that would charge you $50 for a 15 minute ride. Reality check please.

Properly metered taxis or this new Flex system would drastically reduce the drunk driving. It’s in the hands of the politicians and they are sitting on their hands.

Self-entitled millennials…DUI decisions are on the idiots that do it; it’s not a function or consequence of an omission in the app store. Grow up, be responsible, and don’t drink your cab fare!

nothing to do with “self-entitled millennials” this is an issue which has been rampant in Cayman for decades. Yes, I do agree that it is the person’s responsibility and noone elses, however when you know you are being robbed blind by taxi drivers when you are only going 10 miles down the road, stupid decisions are made. The fact of the matter is that we do need something like Lyft/Uber to bring the cost of getting home (day or night) down.

why the thumbs down? In Cayman you lose your license for one year with no blemish on your criminal record. Unless there is a sufficient deterrent people will continue to drink and drive.

Why are they so alarmed when it’s common knowledge to the rest of us? Did they just wake up or something?

RCIP, I’m quite surprised that you are still alarmed and shocked by this. You know the results of your “Christmas Operation” you need to do that “Christmas Operation” 24/7/365!! So at the end of the day you should NOT be surprised with what you find.
