Driver smashes up police car in hit-and-run

Cayman News Service(CNS): A police car was extensively damaged after it was hit by another car, which skidded into its path at around 3:30 Saturday morning. Officers in the RCIPS vehicle had just turned from Sticky Toffee Lane onto Batabano Road in West Bay when the civilian car travelling at high speed in the opposite direction crashed into it, damaging the right front section.  The car then hit a fence post before leaving the scene. One of the officers inside the police car received minor injuries.

Police officers who responded to the scene and conducted inquiries later arrested a 22-year-old woman from the district on suspicion of leaving the scene of an accident. She has since been bailed.

This was one of two incidents this weekend where a driver left the scene of a collision. Around 10:30 on Friday night police were called to a collision in the parking lot of a restaurant on South Church Street, George Town, where a blue Suzuki Swift had reversed into a Mitsubishi Navita.

The driver of the Suzuki spoke to the owner of the Mitsubishi but left the area without providing any contact details, police said. After getting a description of the car and driver, the officers found a man and a car clearly fitting the descriptions.

Based on this and other observations, they arrested the man on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and leaving the scene of the accent. The 35-year-old man from Bodden Town was then taken into custody and provided a breath sample with a reading of .210%. He has since been bailed.

Inspector Ian Yearwood, Head of the Traffic and Roads Policing Unit, warned drivers involved in crashes not to make things worse by leaving the scene.

“Leaving the scene of an accident only compounds the consequences you will face for reckless behaviour on the road,” he said “This is not just about legal consequences but also about the callousness of failing to show concern for those you have hit. Taking responsibility for your actions is always the better thing to do.”

So pulled out from a side street and got hit by a car on the major road? Sounds like the RCIPS doing a Prince Phillip. No excuse for leaving the scene, right enough, but it would be nice to know that someone was looking at whether the RCIPS driver had any liability.

Texting while driving is worse than drinking. Whenever I see someone drifting over the central line, slowing down for no reason or weaving about like a drunk, I look for the phone and always find it, that’s if I can see through the tint.

Some of the Police don’t know how to drive then blame the other person for their bad driving!

The question is how do we improve this situation. We will have to educate all those bad drivers. This will need a multi year long advertising campaign on the radio, tv , in the newspapers, social media etc. The Car insurance companies can play a roll here, every accident prevented safes them a lot of money.

The problem of bad drivers lies with the people that is giving the driving test they takes bribes an gives the license to people that can”t drive properly an don’t know the rule s of the road, this goes on on all 3 islands

And so many drivers from foreign places but their license before coming to cayman and just get it transferred to a Cayman license they have no clue what the road signs mean

Well we don’t need snow and ice on the roads for this like they do further north.

I’ve witnessed RCIPS police on the road in their phones, speeding without lights on, not using indicators, ignoring other wreckless drivers on the road. Nothing will change until they step it up and change.

Maybe is there were regular, hourly, Speed Traps along the main roads it would help us all with not being victims of speeders and criminals about

Where have you been. The police have certainly steeped up the patrols. Every morning I see at least a couple people pulled over for speeding or other traffic offences. Keep it up police, speeding on the LPH and Harquail bypass has significantly reduced.

Why is it that so many drivers MUST pass over the white line while going around corners?
Everyday I have to pull to the side of the road because of drivers who insist on taking up their side of the road and half of mine even on a straight way.

I am no longer surprised at the amount of accidents we have per day. What surprises me is that there are not more! Seems we have a lot of drivers with either depth perception problems or just plain don’t care attitude problems on the road.

THIS! A high number of drivers seem to struggle even with staying in their lane on straight roads, let alone corners and roundabouts.

Just yesterday afternoon, a self-entitled idiot changed lanes into mine, without indication, or bothering to check to see if it was clear, while I blasted my horn. This was on ETH at 55 mph traffic speed. I had to brake violently to avoid trading paint and being rammed into the central median curbing to be flipped or worse. Driving anywhere in Cayman, at any time of day, is dangerous because of the manner and skill level that RCIPS complacently allows to be on the road – it is ironic that they are now the victims and still don’t see the reason for them to be out there regularly like the rest of us. Everybody’s racing to cut someone off! 3:00-5:00pm, the tradesmen/construction rush-hour, is one of the most aggressive times of day! Many of these guys have been out in the sun, doing coke, and drinking rum all day!! It is insane.
