The Mary Girl crashed into the ironshore

(CNS): Several people were injured and a pleasure boat was extensively damaged Saturday night when the charter vessel’s captain slammed it into the ironshore. The RCIPS Joint Marine Unit is now investigating what happened when the Mary Girl ran aground from the North Sound near Vista Del Mar. Police officers responded to the report around 9:30pm with the assistance of the police helicopter. The four people on board, including the captain, were all hurt, though no one suffered life-threatening injuries. However, the captain, who received facial injuries, has been flown off island for surgery. The other three were treated at the Cayman Islands Hospital in George Town and have since been released

Anyone with information is asked to call the Joint Marine Unit at 649-7710. Anonymous tips can be made to the RCIPS confidential tip line at 949-7777, the Miami-based call centre of Crime Stoppers 800-8477(TIPS), or online here.

Star fish point in completely out of control. So many boats, flying in – causing wakes – backing up and dropping anchor within feet of children, loud drunken guests and “captains” that care far more about money than safety.
A few more years it will be Point because the starfish are already almost gone…and not a single site of any marine unit / DOE, etc. All this island cares about is getting the money…safety is a far afterthought

My family and I just came back from the grand cayman on a vacation away from Pa / USA, and it was a great trip, we chartered a private boat to see the sting rays, and star fish point. The captain was first class original from London, and knew the laws for the sea life and boating (top class captain). One of the best trip s we have had. However going out to sea this boat on shore was the first thing we saw, and had allot of conversation about it instead of looking at the beautiful scenery. First thought was I hope they all will be ok, but I could not even think about my family or any kids being on this boat, and the how little responsibility the captain took for other lives. My impression is how poorly this captain handled this boat and his crew that trusted him friends or not friends, then I wondered if it was a captain from the Cayman Islands…… and how many others visiting the island could be on unsafe chartered boats. However not knowing any facts it puts a poor rap on the cayman island and all captains which is not fair….
This boat should have been removed the next day, not a week later on sat which we returned from our trip to see this eye sore was removed between 10am and 1:30 pm on 7/15/2017.
If the facts state he was drinking then pull his boat license, send him to jail, pay for the boat recovery and damage to the shore along with fines. In the US drinking and driving you will lose you licence and go to jail….
Again I must say there are many captains that are responsible, it just looks bad for all.

Also on a second note while snorkeling I could not believe the batteries out by the string rays that are sitting on the ocean flor and one at rum point. Seems to me the cayman government would have these toxic items removed…….

Is this the same boat seen at Kaibo partying all afternoon, surely not. So where are our glorious Marine Unit when they should be closely patrolling both Rum Point, Star Fish Point and Kaibo areas at weekends?
Why aren’t they standing on the dock checking skippers for alcohol or drugs, or stopping boats that have been partying all day around the North Sound?
The eastern side of the sound is out of control at weekends and the RCIPS need to get out there and do their job instead of cruising around during the quieter mid week days. Perhaps a wave runner patrol at Rum Point on a Sunday might be a start.

So. Was it a ex pat or Cayman captain?? Or. Was it just plain stupid. Lack of common sense. I believe. Just plain STUPID. This person endangered his guest and crew. Doesn’t matter if he was a Cayman captain or ex pat. He should go to jail for his stupidity. This kind of shit just makes us captains look bad to the world. Remember. This is seen around the world. And people will wonder if we. The Cayman Islands have responsible people at the helm. We all can laugh. But it is no laughing matter. Shit happens. But this was no accident. Pure neglect on the captain. When will this island learn the world is watching.

Non-Caymanian Captain=scooted off for “facial surgery”= no breathalyzer=back on job

    Equality needed desperately!

As an expat, I have to agree. I have met many seasoned boat captains here who know the water like the back of their hands but can’t get work for lack of papers. Then I also know several “qualified” captains over here right now that have the papers but lack the knowledge or experience of Cayman waters. I know who I’d trust.

Piloting without due care and attention?, or maybe he was taking it for a test drive to see if it would pass it’s seaworthiness test.

That is what you call dry dock. It costs a fortune to have a crane lift a boat out of the water so he’s just saved himself a ton of cash.

I am happy that none of the people were seriously injured . But this just shows us that the Captain didn’t have any boating experience , and all he had was a fast boat . It looks like he remembered that there’s a big pine tree that marks gov harbour channel .

But I surely believe that this Captain should have to take a new Captain / seaman course before he take his next charter . And I wonder how many more are like him operating charter boats .

Meanwhile the “captain” was on social media yesterday saying a friend was driving while he was at the back of the boat and the accident was due to faulty GPS…deleted his comments awfully quickly when the questions started
