Miss Cayman Islands Anika Connolly
(CNS): Anika Connolly from West Bay has been crowned Miss Cayman Islands following the annual national beauty pageant at the Lion’s Centre on Saturday. The 27-year-old, who also won a $70,000 scholarship, will become a tourism ambassador for the islands and will go on to compete in the Miss Universe pageant. However, it is not clear if she will compete in Miss World as the cut-off age in the past has been 27.
Connolly beat out four other girls for the crown as well as winning Best Gown and Best Smile.
First Runner-up Kristin Amaya won the People’s Choice Award, and Second Runner-up Mahalia Seymour was also voted Miss Congeniality.
The new beauty queen was crowned by Monyque Brooks, the former title holder.

The fact that so many people are so content with a winner that won’t place, that can’t compete in the Ms. World pageant, that basically makes the Country stuck with ‘the short end of the stick” beauty pageant wise, is astounding. Also, to be fair, she has a lot of work to do on her body; she has already done some but has a long way to go. Do not misconstrue my comment or take it personally as this is constructive criticism, she is a beautiful girl and intelligent, but these are beauty pageants and you will be judged harshly on your physique.
I say this because I have been watching the Miss Universe pageant all my life and those girls are serious competition. They take it extremely seriously, work-out every single day and only eat certain foods.
We all know that WE Caribbean women are “big-boned” and heavy-set. Unfortunately, this is not the physique you will find at Miss Universe/World.
My advise to the new Miss Cayman Islands would be to check that you will be allowed to participate in the Miss Universe pageant, once confirmed, work your a$$ off everyday and give it your best; that’s all any of us can ask or expect.

Let me point out a few things you DO NOT KNOW! Miss Canada competed in Miss Universe 2016 and placed top 10 and she was “full-figured”. Or what about Miss Jamaica who competed in Miss World 2015 and placed top 5, the 1st Jamaican to wear dreadlocks and beat out 99 other ladies. These are significant changes to pageantry that is defining the way forward that bigger can be better, that different is still beautiful.

You must not have been watching. Every other girl in that competition struggled with walk, posing, gown choice or question response, and “the white girl” struggled with all four.
It is not just about who the majority thinks is prettiest (although I also have to back the choice made on that one), or whoever is “more Caymanian” (whatever that means in our melting pot society of today).
The best representation for this country was chosen. She deserves our love and support – she is already going to receive flak and criticism from international sources, she should at least have her people behind her.

You’re reaching. The comment makes no reference to her working harder than the other girls, simply the opinion that on that day, she deserved the title most, all things considered.
And in response to comments about representation at Miss World, if our Miss Cayman is unable/ineligible, the first runner up takes the spot. Caymanian representation will take place in international competitions. This is not however the only or the most important part of her job – she also has a number of local commitments, and those have no age limit. She should therefore not be penalized for her age.
Too old for Miss World, and yes, it is a viable opportunity for a Tourism Ambassador. Too bad we would have to send Miss Cayman #2, instead of the reigning contestant. Oh well.

Don’t forget Kenny Bryan represented Cayman on the world stage as Mr. Cayman. Wonder if thats on his resume again this time around.
Anika is a beautiful lady both inside and out. She is cool calm and collected in most situations. She works with the youth and is behind development initiatives that encourage and develop Cayman future workers and leaders. Anika could easily win an international competition if she had the opportunity to represent Cayman because her views and attitude on topics come from her heart. She is an excellent role model.
I wish Anika much success with this title, and all the best in her future aspirations. Next time we hear about Anika I hope it’s her running for education MLA role that will actually bring about much needed change and deliver.

She has to be a certain age to enter at the international competitions. She is too old for Miss World. She had to have a toned body, which her dimples and saggy body does not show those. Weight correlates with health and being overweight shows that the beauty queen did not care to eat right and exercise.
Her face is beautiful. Her intelligence shines through. But this is a beauty competition. Realistically, she won’t get anything internationally.
Not one Caymanian beauty queen has ever placed. Why send someone who won’t even get tv coverage? At the very least the last beauty queen got tv coverage. She was gorgeous and intelligent and she had a toned body.
As an average lady, she is fabulous. As a beauty queen, Cayman must have better individuals to represent the island.

Incorrect – Monyque Brooks was not where she needed to be “body wise” before she left for international pageants – she worked hard to get where she was – JUST LIKE Anika – what got Monyque the crown was her stage presentation and her points – not her body.

She is NOT “very much overweight” and clearly you know nothing about the intense training and healthy eating regimen that young woman puts herself through. Anika is a tall woman with natural curves and she should not have to feel pressure by anonymous trolls like you when she is healthy and works hard to maintain her physical appearance.
She is an advocate of young Caymanian empowerment, of civic responsibility, of wholesome values, and of community spirit and she always has been. Those are traits that are far more important to her as a role model for young Caymanians than her hip-to-waist ratio.
And so what that she won’t be able to enter Miss World? In the history of the pageant, only 4 Miss Cayman Islands have won some sort of title in those international competitions and the only one to actually make it into the Top 15 did so in the 80s. If you think 2 seconds of airtime in the national costume segment is a serious tourism boost for our country then you need a serious dose of reality.

When you enter a beauty pageant, be prepared for criticism.
It is a fact that the women who enter the Miss Universe pageant are extremely beautiful and physically attractive; they look like perfect models.
They work extremely hard for this physique, so don’t label people for trying to point the facts out to this young lady; she must know the amount of work that needs to be done to be seen as “competition”.

Some very small suggestions that can easily be fixed with some good support , which I am sure you have:) Start eating and exercising and you will be ready for the Miss Universe (or any other pageant) before you know it. Spot on. We all know there is some sort of “political” way the winners are chosen. What is not considered is the fact that it leaves the rest of Cayman in the dump, when it’s time for competition. I for one will not be cheering just because of blind patriotism.
Why can’t we ever chose the ladies that will best represent us on the international stage? Are the judges even paying attention to the representatives of other countries, you know, the competition? For the people’s sake, get out of the box Cayman.

What an excellent choice. Taking nothing away from Anika, i do think moving forward as a tourism ambassador we should not limit Miss Cayman’s exposure to the world, and our selection process should be one that allows our winner to compete, and showcase our islands on the entire world stage.
Congratulations. I do not doubt Anika’s attributes in anyway but as a country we have to move on from sexist and patronizing pageants. Let’s empower women and not belittle them.
