Police revisit GT murder scene

Walk-through of murder scene where Damean Dwayne ‘Deebo’ Seymour was shot

(CNS): Yesterday, detectives and uniformed officers revisited the scene where Damean Dwayne ‘Deebo’ Seymour was shot dead in a gang-related killing on Martin Drive to talk with residents in the area who may have seen something that can help the investigation. Seymour was gunned down in broad daylight last Monday morning, 28 November, at around 11:30, close to the now infamous ‘Globe Bar’, the scene of two murders and several other violent incidences over the last few years.

An RCIPS spokesperson said officers were pursuing various active lines of inquiry, including a suspect seen on CCTV. She told the media that the release of those images is under consideration but in the meantime, as is customary in murder or serious crime inquiries, officers returned a week after the crime to see if they could learn anything new.

The neighbourhood walk-through around the scene was designed to jog memories and give officers a chance to talk with potential witnesses who may have been missed in the first door-to-door inquiries or to speak again with people who may have remembered something. They also gave out information to allow people to approach the police confidentially.

Seymour was the second person to be murdered in Cayman this year and both killings are believed to be gang-related. In such cases the police continue to struggle to win the trust of the community to reveal what they know to help them put an end to the ongoing tit-for-tat violence that has taken the lives of dozens of young Caymanian men and landed many others in HMP Northward.

Detective Inspector Collins Oremule, the senior investigator on the murder inquiry, led the walk-through and he was hopeful that they could learn more about who shot Seymour. However, he admitted that many people in the area are not comfortable talking with police, especially those in uniform, after a local crowd of residents disappeared once the police and reporters arrived.

Regardless of the challenges, the police liaison officer said the RCIPS was committed to the case and it remained a priority investigation.
