(CNS): The Cayman Islands Fire Service has begun the competitive element of its recruitment process to fill 15 entry-level jobs. Officials said that 79 Caymanian applicants who met the criteria test when they applied took the 20 question Fire Service entry exam last week. The potential recruits were tested on their knowledge of basic grammar, reading comprehension and mathematical reasoning.

Applicants who score 80 percent or higher on the written exam will take the physical ability test for candidates later this month.

“The turnout was outstanding, and I am delighted to see so many applicants show interest in a future career with the Fire Service,” Chief Fire Officer David Hails said. “We are determined to find passionate and hardworking individuals who are willing to do whatever it takes to serve and protect this community.”

Human Resource Manager Clara Smith, who helped conduct the testing, along with Human Resource Officer Kandie Hurlston, at the George Town Public Library, said she was heartened that, while there were a few no shows, most of the candidates arrived at the testing facility “early, eager and excited for the opportunity”.

Chief Hails said the next round of physical tests would ensure that those who make the written grade are also physically fit, can swim to the accepted standard, can handle being confined in small spaces and deal with heights.

Applicants in Cayman Brac will take their entry exam later this month.

The Fire Service is so popular with Caymanians just the opposite of the Police Dept, can anyone guess why?.

Does expats with Caymanian Status or PR qualify to become fire officer?

Doesn’t matter, who ever “makes the grade”, will have to wait months, at least six, before training will even start. Been there, done that. A complete waste of time.

One wonders if people would post hogwash if they didn’t have the option to post as ‘Anonymous’.

How do they know the applicants are Caymanian?

Drug testing and a background/character search should be compulsory.

What would be great is if the new recruits had a first responder EMR course along with CPR.
And train any of the current staff who have interest the same. Our fire guys do a great job and should be given the opportunity to do more.
