(CNS): A 57-year-old local woman who works at the immigration department has been charged with drug and immigration offences. The woman, who has not yet been named, is expected to appear in court Tuesday, facing allegations that she allowed her home to be used for supplying drugs and that she knowingly assisted with the illegal landing of a 30-year-old man from the Bahamas.

The woman, who was described as a “senior immigration officer”, was arrested in August during an early morning police raid at a house in Savannah, when an illegal gun and ammunition and an undisclosed quantity of ganja were seized.

The immigration officer was arrested alongside the illegal immigrant, two other men and a 21-year-old woman. At the time of her arrest officials from the deputy governor’s office as well as the home affairs ministry confirmed that the officer was placed on required leave while the matter was being investigated.

The police charged the 30-year-old man from the Bahamas with illegal landing a few days after the raid and a 22-year-old man was also later charged with possession of the unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

At the time of the arrests, the RCIPS said the raid was connected to an investigation into shots that were fired at a house in Omega Drive, Prospect, three days prior to the police operation in Savannah.
