Registering officers ready to help new and old voters

Cayman News Service(CNS): The deadline for registering to vote in the May 2017 General Election is 31 December, so there are only a few months left for people who are or will be eligible to vote by the time of the election to sign up to join in the democratic process in Cayman’s first ever ballot carried out under the principle of ‘one man, one vote’ in single member constituencies. The Elections Office is already working on its education campaign but a key element is to encourage the more than 5,000 people who are entitled to vote but have not yet registered to sign up before the deadline.

Despite the change to the election landscape from six multi-member voting districts to 19 single-member constituencies, the Elections Office is sticking to six registering officers, each of whom will be able to register qualified voters in all of the constituencies within their respective districts.

The officers maintain voter registers so the public can check whether they are on the voter list. They can also deal with changes of address or other important changes in voters circumstances and ensure those who want to vote in the national poll next year are able to do so in the right place. Details of the officers are as follows:

West Bay
Bethany Powery-Ebanks: 516-4402

George Town
Kathryn Myles: 516-2117

Bodden Town
Kerry Nixon: 516-4478

East End
Leisa Welcome: 516-4647

North Side
Patricia Ebanks: 516-4349

Cayman Brac and Little Cayman
Ellen Lazzari; 516-5307 or 948-1707

I do hope that Mr Moses K will be in the race again which should not be much of a competition, because he is a man that says what he means and does whatever he says. He certainly is a good Representative that does not embarrass the Bracers.

Do they tell you who to vote for too?

Why do they need a 5 month cut off before election date to register a handful of voters?

    Do not vote. Stay home.

KYD$1.4mln/18,457 = KYD$75.85 per voter…with only 6 mos to go, there still aren’t the required new faces declared to properly contest each of the 19 districts – which (we should all fear) may lead to some of the tired career-kleptocrats winning by acclamation.

I never voted and never will. All of them are full of sh*t.

Where else in the world, do people hired and paid for by the government, go door to door to make sure people are registered or encourage people to register for an upcoming general election? Would love to know what this is costing us. Election fever OMOV.

8.30 I guess where you’re from you are accustomed to the corrupt political parties doing the registering and persons being left off the list because they are thought to be supporting the ‘other’ party.
