False news report stirs anger on social media
(CNS): A bizarre and inaccurate news story appearing on a UK-based website stirred up anger on social media after readers believed that the PPM government was about to offer visa-free access and to waive work permit fees for Jamaicans coming to the Cayman Islands. Based in Brixton, in London 1ndependent describes itself as a breaking news and rumours website. The report was denied by officials here and the premier indicated it was completely false. The report indicated that the decision had been made by the governor and Cabinet and passed by the Legislative Assembly Friday.
There was no date on the report and the local parliament has not met since it finished its budget meeting in June.
The idea that government would forego the millions of dollars in permit fees it collects on workers for the neighbouring island is hard to imagine, as Jamaican workers account for half of all permits issued by the immigration department.
Speaking to Cayman 27, the local television news service, the premier stated that the story was “nonsense”.
He said, “Cabinet has neither considered nor does it intend to consider nor has it sanctioned any such measure. Certainly the Legislative Assembly is yet to meet and has obviously not passed such changes to work permit fees for Jamaicans.”

Oh please, I can’t believe anyone fell for that.
Apparently a lot of Supporters of UDP and the Independents fell for it and went off on PPM.
Well they had it partly right…permits for all yes….free no way! Thank you Alden and Marco for all the rejections and humiliations your people endure when seeking employment.
10.17 UDP,UDP Don’t you guys get tired because your tactics are really, really tired.
Only hoax around here is the PPM and its election promises.
@ 7.43am Maybe, but UDP not won’t benefit from it.
They safer in Jamaica anyway.
Marl Road gossip, trial balloon…. Stay tune folks, more so stay very vigilant, you never know! Just thinking out loud.
It just goes to show how many simple minded people we have here. They will believe anything and what is bad these people vote.
At least we could allow the higglers back to sell their lovely Jamaican mangos.
This was obviously an intelligence agency psy-op to gauge public sentiment and reaction… to which it worked brilliantly. Way to go MI6.
Spot on
You don’t need MI6 to spend valuable time winding the little islander idiots up, you do well enough on your own.
Better not. We need less petmits and not a free for all policy.
12;41 you are very correct
This just goes to show how the Cayman people truly feel about their elected representatives. Judging from the all the comments, the people of these islands certainly wouldn’t put it past the shenanigans of these self-serving career politicians.
You’re welcome.
