MLAs’ meeting clashes with Clinton v Trump debate

| 26/09/2016 | 18 Comments

(CNS): The independent MLAs will be in West Bay this evening, raising their concerns about the impact the raft of legislation that the government will be bringing to parliament next month will have on the community. But the meeting clashes with the first of the televised presidential debates in the United States. While the five independent members are hoping local voters will be more concerned about local government policy, there are many people in Cayman who believe that the result of the US election will have far more implications for the islands then all 29 pieces of government legislation put together.

Alva Suckoo, Anthony Eden, Arden McLean, Ezzard Miller and Winston Connolly are hosting the fifth in their serious of district political meetings Monday 26 Septemebr, in which they have taken aim at government policy regarding issues such LGBT rights and criticising the long list of bills that will be on the Legislative Assembly agenda when parliament meets on 4 October.

But as the race for the Whitehouse heats up and Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump are neck and neck in the polls, locals and residents in Cayman are keeping a close eye on the election to the north before they turn their attention to the local race, which is likely to begin in earnest in the New Year.

The influence of Cayman’s massive northern neighbour is such that the presidential election in the USA has an impact on the entire global community, but with Cayman’s economy so intrinsically linked with America, the election in any year is always of significant interest here.

However, this year, given the views about and the behaviour of the Republican candidate and fears people have about his temperament and suitability to take office, the first debate between Trump and Clinton, the first ever female presidential candidate in the US, is expected to attract a record-breaking audience. US media was suggesting Monday that more than 100 million people will be watching. The event comes as much of the US press has come to the conclusion that despite the accusations made at Clinton Trump actually tells more lies. The West Bay Meeting is being held at the Sir John A Cumber hall and starts at 8pm, the same time locally as the presidential debate which is being broadcast live by the main US TV networks and streamed online.

Goodness how did our state of political affairs sink this low? I use to take pleasure in going to political meetings back on the 70s and 80s. People when we got no refreshments and were not seeking handouts, we are regressing Caymanians.

Actually I pay more attention to US politics because that’s mainly were our tourism dollars and financial investments comes from.

Our local politicians giving away a washing machine, a fridge or a stove in Birch Tree Hill, Windsor Park, Swamp, Gun Square, Hutland, John McLean Drive, Spot Bay – doesn’t allow me to pay my light bill or buy groceries weekly at Fosters, Kirks or Hurleys supermarket.

Vote Hillary Clinton for POTUS. She and Bill has lot’s of money invested in the Cayman Islands which provides jobs in the financial sector.

Donald Trump has his in China and Russia.

Trump needs to go to West Bay where he would fit right in. He is a dummy who wants to be President and they all want to be Premier.

CNS you are clearly showing bias against the Independents the only ones standing up for Caymanians

We have enough big mouths running around West Bay now, and therefore no more is needed from the east or elsewhere.

I already got my popcorn warming, in preparation for watching the US debates tonight.

This article is a very good indicator what is wrong with the world, and why Caymanians will not be prosperous in their efforts.

A theatrical “debate” between two crooks in the USA has a greater meaning to the community than the efforts of local affairs. Albeit, a lot of hogwash mumbojumbo bs being spewed in the local political arena, but to care more about the entertainment factor of those two buffoons vs try and change the bs in Cayman is just absurd. That is a country of 300 million, whereas the local population here is 30K. To say as a Caymanian you can’t make a change and make this country solid, is a total joke. Show up and make a difference, and just bow down and turn into Dart slaves. You have a choice and this next election will determine if you remain a slave or not.

I think you meant “Show up and make a difference OR just bow down and turn into Dart Zombies”, yeah? (‘Zombie’ seems more fitting then ‘slave’)
