Man killed by own truck in tragic accident
Cayman Islands Hospital, George Town
(CNS) Updated Tuesday: The man who died in Bodden Town yesterday evening had been pinned between his truck and a palm tree in his yard after the truck had shifted into gear while he was working on it, police have said. The victim was Luis Rhoden (69) of Bodden Town. Following the accident, which happened at his home on Valencia Drive just after 5:30pm yesterday, neighbours released the man and followed instructions from 911 operators until police and emergency services arrived. Rhoden was taken to hospital and pronounced dead around 6:45pm.
The RCIPS clarified that no one was behind the wheel of the truck when the accident occurred.

The poster who referenced the poor road design, especially round-abouts, is absolutely correct. Some years ago I questioned an NRA worker about the camber on the round-abouts and he told me that the workers had questioned same but the “engineers” told them to ‘mind their own business’. I can really believe that! Too many “experts’ in our public service whose credentials aren’t worth the paper they’re on or whose egos surpass their knowledge!!
Not only round-abouts are dangerous but the high pavement edges on some roads, the poor markings and lack of proper signage, etc. I’ve wondered about why the northern lanes of the Esterley Tibbetts bypass near Governor’s Harbour are raised well above the southbound lanes, with no barriers. If a vehicle goes off the northern lanes on the right hand side it will surely land on the top of any southbound vehicle in its way, not just collide with it, thereby risking much worse injuries – decapitation, etc. God forbid.
I was born in the UK and visit every year and I am yet to see a roundabout that pitches outwards. It is a simple case of physics. An outboard pitch will cause cars to be unstable in corners. Whoever designed the roundabout here is simply an idiot and has obviously never seen a racetrack or roundabout in any other country before.
Savannah, BT and beyond seem to be the deadliest areas thus far for 2016, have the RCIPS thought about placing a patrol car on the side of road in the areas during rush hour? If Manny was still around none of this sh*t would be happening.

With all due respect to the victims, and condolences to the family’s .
But can anyone that knew most of these victims , say that these people drove with their seat in a layed back position ?
I think that the Judge said something about this in Mr Scott case .
CNS, the events as reported here are incorrect. I was there in the direct aftermath, before fire and ambulance got there. It was a freak accident in a driveway. Please investigate further.

The roads of Cayman are done of the most dangerous I’ve seen , not the roads themselves but total idiots on them, not a police car parked up anywhere, people speeding, texting, no seat belts, overtaking on the inside, weaving, you name it it goes on, I drove into town last week at around 715am and people were virtually cutting me up just to get 1 car length in front of me, more will die I assure you as no one is doing anything still,
I am sorry but the roads themselves are also to blame in some instances, camber on roundabouts leaning the wrong way for example. It is interesting that the newspapers reported that there will be much traffic congestion over the summer when the NRA re-build the roundabout at Red Bay. However no one seems to question how the roundabout got built back to front in the first place. Entrances and exits based on driving on the right, not the left and adverse camber, which has the effect of throwing cars outwards when driving round. I have seen many instances where if a high sided truck was going just a mile or so per hour faster it would have fallen over. In fact one that did turn over at the Butterfield roundabout might have been because of adverse camber.

The roads are almost never to blame, only the first time you use it could that excuse be legitimately used. We are all obliged to drive with due care and attention; sadly too many people forget all too soon. I was recently driving overseas and saw an “Adverse Camber” sign on a stretch of road, people drove accordingly.
BUT when have you ever seen an “adverse camber” warning sign here? and forgive me, but how many people actually know what that means?
Every morning I wake up and think that today might be my last as I get in my car and drive for 30 minutes (against the traffic) to my place of work. It’s a long drive and I see idiots most days. They think it will never happen to them, but the more they put themselves and others at risk the more likely they will die or cause someone else to die. It’s horrible and very scary. I was suprised to see that it’s not only young men inexperienced drivers either, it’s also respectable people in the community who drive like complete nutters! I see my co workers over taking and they only get to work 5 minutes quicker than me. What’s the point in taking someones life for 5 minutes? Get up 5 minutes earlier for goodness sake!
The worst are children not in car seats and sitting or standing in the passenger or drivers laps. Only a matter of time before a devastating accident occurs with one of these
In first world countries not having children in proper car seats is a serious offence that could well end in child endangerment charges and children being taken away from their parents and placed in foster care. Here is it a common occurrence with no enforcement by the police just like many other laws (traffic or otherwise).
