Savannah man killed in hit and run
(CNS) Updated Sunday afternoon: Police have now named the cyclist who was killed by a hit and run driver on Hirst Road in the vicinity of Butterfly Circle, in one of two road crashes early Saturday morning. He was Anthony David James Moore (34), of Newlands, Savannah. In a separate incident but shortly afterwards, just before 5:00am Saturday, there was a crash on Shamrock Road involving a government truck and a Honda Accord.
In an update on the fatal hit and run, the RCIPS said Sunday that officers of the Traffic Department are seeking the help of anyone who may have been on Hirst Road (better known as Newlands Road) between Shamrock Road and Butterfly Circle, between 3:15am and 4:45am on Saturday, 30 April to contact PC Orville Harris (324-9853) or Sergeant Butler (325-5958) if they had witnessed anything in relation to the death of the cyclist.
Anyone who may have heard any sound in the vicinity that could have been a vehicle collision between these times is also asked to contact those officers.
Regarding the second crash Saturday morning, police said that the government the truck was travelling towards Bodden Town, and the Honda was travelling in the opposite direction towards Savannah when the vehicles collided. The driver of the Honda has been admitted to the George Town hospital in serious condition.
Someone made it back to Their home in Newlands Saturday morning
but I guarantee Something was “Different”, “off” and “odd” about Them.
There was SOMETHING UNUSUAL in That home That morning.
Maybe you noticed They seemed agitated, or distant and preoccupied, somewhat paranoid.
and maybe They cancelled that appointment that They had with you on Saturday.
maybe They were seen washing their vehicle early first thing in Saturday morning.
or maybe They had to visit your auto-body shop Saturday with an emergency repair request.
maybe They put their vehicle in the garage late late Friday night
and you noticed it wasn’t parked on the street where it usually is on Saturday mornings.
maybe They have refused to drive or go out the house since Saturday morning
I hope they can’t bring themselves to get behind the wheel.
They
could have called 911!
You
have a civic and moral duty to come forward with ANY information
that might help bring this cold hearted murderer to justice!
Murderer blood de Pon your shoulders.
U can hide from man
but not your conscience.
U could wash your hands
till you can’t wash no more.
Your insdes must be hollow.
Walt Whitman?
Probably drunk,. The police should be appealing to repair shops, there would not exactly be hordes of other drivers around at that time of morning.
Any results/information from the million $ CCTVs that someone or company should take full responsibility for. We are the laughing stock of the world. CCTVs that only work went there are no clouds and no rain.
Lets see if when they catch this guy if he gets the same amount of jail time as the recent gold digger got.
When one get 16 months for killing someone, what do you want?
As we all know, there is two sides to every story. 5 in the morning is still quite dark, not making any excuse for the driver but im sure if he was following the speed limit such tragedy would be less likely to occur, there is also a slight elevation change in that area which would be slight challenging for intoxicated or ametuer drivers. Many cyclists are unequipped for riding on the especially in lower lit conditions, by the sounds of it this young man was exercising and even though i dont know him im sure he would of been well equipped. But we must teach cyclist and drivers courtesy for one another.
Cyclist range from recreational athletes to workers on their way to/from work. Many of the workers ride on the wrong side of the road, no lights, helmets or even reflective vests. Police should policing and picking out these minor infractions and educating them to prevent accidents. as for the recreational cyclists most of them are well equipped but the dark clothing does not help at certain times of day.
Im not trying to point any fingers but we all have to be considerate while running, cycling, and driving on these public roads. Its not fair for someone to lose a loved one by someones carelessness or inconsideration. Lets do our part and be CaymanKind!
R.I.P to the young man who lost his life prematurely and condolences to his family.
If one can’t drive down the road without hitting cyclists (and by extension, schoolchildren, animals, walkers, etc.,) you are wholly and absolutely unqualified to be driving.
There can be not mitigating circumstances, excuses and acceptance. As a driver you should be able to stop or avoid a dog, or child running out into your path, let alone a cyclist, who may well have been fully lit and traveling in a nice safe predictable line close to the edge of the road.
No excuses. There would certainly be none if this driver had hit and killed schoolchildren.
So, as at 1.54pm, let me get this straight, 10 likes and 2 dislikes. So 17% of people here think they can kill at will, as long as it’s in a car. Says everything about this country. Disgusting. Disgrace. Morally and socially bankrupt.
Well maybe they are just disagreeing with your statement that a driver should be able to stop if a dog or child runs into your path. That’s not really true. You should be able to stop if the vehicle in front of you stops, yes. But to say that if someone that runs out in front of you can be avoided….. not so much.
Not really. I was driving normal speed and I heard this thump. A bird had flew into the rear passenger side of my car.
It has hit and run. Regardless of circumstances.
This is a direct result of the extremely relaxed attitude of the RCIP towards traffic laws for the last 10 years.
Since Baines took over.
Give it a rest. Only a fool would believe this.
500. 500 years.
I gave up jogging along Hirst Road after several experiences of being almost knocked/run over at 5:30 a.m. despite wearing “blinkers” on my shirts and a flashlight in hand. People must be in some serious rush at this hour to get to work on time or to get home before parents/spouses realize they were gone!
The CCTV cameras in that area should be able to narrow down model and make of vehicles on the road during that time.
Were the CCTV cameras working properly? If not why not?
Until a person(s) responsible for CCTV operations is known and the answers are demanded, nothing will change.
At the end of the day we need more police on the roads to stop drivers breaking the law. Transport police are a huge chunk of the police budget in any part of the world except cayman. Even today I spotted a motorbike going down west bay road on his back wheel around 3pm. I haven’t seen one police car today. Where are you all hiding? If you pull a wheelie in the UK it’s close enough to an instant ban for dangerous driving. Come on cayman get your police back Behind the wheel and keep these law breakers and mindless fools off our roads.
Seems they went around the island. I saw two of them on walkers road yesterday evening.
Green motorbike with the driver STANDING ON HIS SEAT while doing a wheelie down Walkers road followed by another on a white bike around 4pm yesterday…
Anyone walking, running or cycling on the roads is taking their life into their hands. I do it regularly and the speeds that the drivers are traveling at (especially early in the mornings) are terrifying. And I NEVER see a police car – this is potential revenue the Government is missing, as well as being a major issue that is taking people’s lives. I just wish the police would take this seriously and deal with it. If this many people had lost their lives in gun related crimes this year then resources would be being thrown at the problem. How can this be allowed to continue?
Can’t have that, they might ticket the wrong person, then years of delays until that officer is no longer on island and BAM, no case to be answered.
Cayman Islands have not evolved enough to have the police involved in Law enforcement. They are way too busy doing crime clean up because of the non functional court system here. This is not going to change anytime soon.
A government truck out before 5 am? The garbage truck? Who else out in government vehicles at that hour?
The daily schedules of DEH garbage collection must be appreciated first, before the follow up questions are answered. I know for a fact that the drivers of these trucks have to report to work as early as 04:00 am and are on the road within minutes to handle long routes, to avoid crowded parking lots for easy access to bins, while at the same time, minimizing impact on traffic congestion during peak hours, let alone they command a huge presence on the road. Instead, we need to focus on the sporadic dangers on the road during the early morning hours, where alcohol consumption usually plays a factor, compounded by the fact that these drivers assume that the road is reasonably clear of traffic at that time of the morning, and they can afford to drive at dangerous speeds in a relaxed and fluid position. This is more prominent after wet-fets, concerts etc. We may very well find some consistency between those two separate accidents.
They were emptying our garbage before 6.30am today. These guys do a great job and should be appreciated
the sanitation department is one of the hardest working government agencies, you should refrain from your comments.
Was the government vehicle off the clock? If so it was an illegal use.
RIP and condolences to his family Cayman is becoming like Miami – the hit-and-run capital of the western world!! This is a most despicable and heartless act. Please turn yourself in!! Anyway, God will be your judge and surely his wrath is harsher than the Courts!!
Driving to a venue in the evening is like playing Russian roulette with all the idiots on the roads. Just to get somewhere you run the risk of at best, an accident, if not worse.
Then you get to where you are going and cannot help wondering if your home is getting burgled or the establishment that you are in is the next for an armed robbery!
Then, run the gauntlet again on the roads!
I just stay in now, save my money and work on my escape plan.
My sentiments exactly! I am leaving as soon as possible – Cayman is going to crap in so so many ways.
Me 3
Good luck, where you move to will probably have a higher rate of this than here. Cayman is so small that this is news and we hear about it and it is sad and it is wrong, but Cayman is still a lot safer than so many other places out there.
This response is the common knee jerk defensive response which has been thrown out time after time after time. One of Cayman’s biggest issue is that we compare ourselves to worse off places rather than trying to get better. How much longer do we want to wait? Until we can say we are just as bad as Jamaica, Honduras, Bahamas etc?
Let’s take the head out of the sand and face up to reality. There really is no excuse for that much violence, crime, , corruption, reckless driving etc on an Island as small as Cayman.
Can you people ever deal with a problem or address something without putting down other islands? FYI crime poverty etc is base on the population the road deaths and accident in Cayman compare to Jam or Bahamas is ridiculous so Cayman is worse …. But of course the discussion strayed from the accident NA true
Have you actually looked at the crime stats per capita ? I suggest you do. Cayman is failing on so many issues and crime is one. These things have to be addressed by a government that actually cares and acts because as of now Cayman is on a very slippery slope and I can’t see it improving without some serious intervention.
I doubt it will have a higher rate of road fatalities than here but I guess you will never know.
“plan my escape plan”…you literally made me LOL for the weakest attempt to pretend like you actually have a plan to begin with. If you have to plan an escape plan out of here how are you going to be better off anywhere else? Are you trapped here? You are free to go whenever you want mr/mrs boomerang.
Another reason for a decent CCTV on the island
Anywhere else the contract for our current cameras would be investigated and the responsible persons for allowing such a low quality system would be identified.
to 8:53pm, we all knew who allowed it, many times this person’s name has been mentioned, but nothing ever happens…same security gets govt contracts with no bids…yet nothing happens…police station gets robbed of drugs being guarded by the same company, nothng happens..
Incumbents and BFFs. Politically Protected Men.
6:53pm. Only in the Cayman Islands this could happen. Not a comment from the Premier on the low quality cameras that costs a fortune. The more you fleece the country the more promotions you get.
The whole traffic problem in the Cayman Islands needs to be seriously looked at by the government and everyone living on the Islands.
When you have 5 tragic deaths in 4 months on the Islands the size of Cayman Islands , Mr Hanes nearly been knocked down on the shoulder of the road , where the driver had no reason to be driving on .
I think that everyone living on the Islands should get together and get Government to address these traffic issues , because we don’t know who is going to be the next victim of stupid and careless driver’s.
As with so many other issues on island, this sadly like the rest will not result in any action from rcip or gov. Best just stay off roads as much as possible and cyclists should just not bother at all. Sad but true.
It’s careless mindless drivers. There’s nothing you can do about it. You can jump through the appropriate hoops to get your liscense but then it’s a free for all.
Getting your licemce is a free for all, that is the exact problem.
What on earth do you mean there is nothing you can do about it? What about rapists and pedophiles? Anything you can do about them? Or nothing? Murders? Nothing you can do about them, right. Just stuck with them. Corrupt thieving politicians? Unassailable.
Forgive me if I am wrong, but is this not the second year in a row that an innocent road-user has lost their life after Wet-Fete(last year, a jogger was hit on South Sound Rd)? It would seem that this is an event that RCIPS should have a strong presence at, with drivers being tested before they get behind the wheels of their cars…..
That would kill the spirit of party and freedom wet fete stands for. Leave us alone!
The spirit of the party and freedom it stands for is a distant second to the safety and well being of other citizens. Why is that so hard for you idiots to understand? Do you honestly think that your desire for fun should matter more than someone else’s life?
If you do, then you have proven that you, your parents, and your government are utter and complete failures far from anything resembling the so called Christian people who know how to follow God ‘s law and live in His way. Don’t worry I already know the answer when it is waved proudly in my face every day. Church on Sunday only helps if you practice living in a godly way whenever you are not in church too.
Seriously never been advised to not feed the troll? It’s quite obvious that’s what they are but by all means, have a heart attack trying to break it all down for someone who was just looking to see who they could wind up.
Condolences to the family and friends of the hit and run cyclist. R.I.P.
Cayman kind! What BS!
What a horrible way to go. I hope they catch the heartless bastard that did this. RIP Tony
To Anonymous 7:39. Really you need to chill and give the RCIP a break. We dont have alternates routes in that area and what were they suppose to do, sweep the road quickly so you could pass and forget about investigating the accident. You should thank the people that allowed you to drive through their front yard, and oh yeah, use your toilet before you leave home.
I haven’t seen a police car in weeks. Where are they hiding?
Also I had never experienced a gravel truck going 60 miles an hour before but had to move out of the way of one last week otherwise my car would probably have been overrun. I tried to speed up my car to 50 miles but it still wasn’t enough for this truck.
Next time slow down to 30
Say a prayer for the family – his Father died last week. RIP
Go cycling, jogging, running or walking and put your lives in idiots hands, I run regularly and every other car either has no seat belt on or is texting, stop it now Cayman, idiots,
I very seriously cannot help wondering what on earth is it with the police holding up a whole world of traffic for a full TWELVE HOURS following an accident like this. Thousands of dollars and gallons of gasoline get wasted and thousands of hours get subtracted from hundreds of peoples lives and the police appear to be blissfully unaware of this fact. This happens over and over and over in Cayman at very considerable cost to the general public. I would be the last person on earth to complain of indeed there is a reasonable explanation for this and if indeed there is I would be most grateful for some enlightenment on the matter please.
Get over yourself!
Sorry folks NONE of your smart ass responses even begin to approach a reasonable explanation.
Sorry idiots, “trolling” does not constitute a reasonable explanation or enlightenment on the matter.
I will help with your dilemma, Less rubber necking, and ghouls around the scene would help the situation.
Sorry, doesn’t help with my dilemma at all.
Cheer up. As they say, 3 x 3 = 9 :))
At least we know you’re not mckeewa.
Judging by some of the comments here I would consider it quite safe to question that.
Have you seen them trying to investiate an accident. The time I was involved (and actually probably at fault) it was pathetic…. and they sent me on my way!
I have seen. I concur. I told them to take the photos of the damage. They looked at me, scratched their heads and said they have no camera.
You just don’t get it, do you. I’d say that there’s already been a “considerable cost” to a member of the public. How can that not justify doing the investigation right?
You just don’t get it, do you.
Well tough luck – the inconvenience to you is nothing compared to the grief of a family that also lost their Father last week.
Sorry, doesn’t answer my question.
Are you one of the same people that complains when the Police response is perceived to be below par? The road is closed so they can properly examine the scene and gather all the evidence possible in the hope to secure a conviction. Someone has lost their life. Have some respect and put up with the mild inconvenience of a closed road.
Sorry, holding up traffic for 12 hours is definitely below par.
Uhmm someone died you inconsiderate ass…
My sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased but this does not begin to answer my question.
A reason, may be it is because a cyclist was mowed down by in all likelyhood, a drunk driver. Who then fled and left the man to bleed to death
It should be treated as murder, but even not< do you not think the dead man and his family deserve a proper investigation?
You are probably the driver that almost hit another cyclist head on by a car trying to jump the traffic by driving in the wrong lane on to incoming traffic.
Cayman is such a christian place, where when a boat goes missing, andpolice spend days searching and then called into the LA. Meanwhile a cyclist is murder and it is just an inconvenience to this lipservice christians
You disgust me
You disgust me more.
It is such glaring ignorance to attempt to discredit an entire class of people, or indeed an entire country of people for a single person’s misdeed. Do you KNOW that the individual responsible for this was a professing Christian??? I would say the answer is no, but if you do I think you may have some information the police can use. Otherwise I would suggest you kindly keep your sewer trap shut.
I wish you had the guts to identify yourself you selfish spoilt little child.
I would give you what your mama and daddy couldnt give you because they were so stupid. In fact they can come too because i would give them theirs too.
But as usual you are a coward and wont. But I will make it easy for you. I will find you.
Punk.
R.I.P. Tony. You deserved better. You were a friend.
I doubt it. Let’s stay on topic here rather than allowing things to run off!
R.I.P. Tony. I am certain you are much better off with the kind of friends you have now.
YOU seem to be “blissfully” unaware that someone DIED. I hope that answered your questions to why you wasted “thousands of hours” of your life that you’re ungratefully living. btw, NO ONE spent 12 hours in traffic.
You seem to be blissfully unaware that I have offered my written sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased, or am I required to offer that to you personally? Btw, who on earth suggested that ANYONE spent 12 hours in traffic??? The rest of your idiotic comment is simply not worth responding to. Go get a life.
Actually, the original post said 12 hours. “the police holding up a whole world of traffic for a full TWELVE HOURS following an accident like this”. So either the OP didn’t mean what they said, you’re trying to split hairs by only IMPLYING that people spent 12hrs in traffic or …
“the police holding up a whole world of traffic for a full TWELVE HOURS” does not mean or even remotely imply that any single individual was held up for twelve hours. It means precisely what it says. That the police had traffic held up for twelve hours.
The madness… and the sadness continues. Five road deaths in the first four months of the year. We are on pace to be above last year’s total. When are we going to learn?
I wonder if the bicycle has the same color paint on it as the car that got in wreck with the truck .
If you read the story correctly and stopping jumping to conclusion would have notice in the story it said, the bicycle got hit in newlands…. the car accident was by lower valley…. the honda was travelling towards G.T…… newlands is after lower valley….. so you are saying the car hit the bicycle and went towards bodden town, then turn around and start to head back to town and then hit the truck……. lol, people stop trying to plat detective…..
@ Anonymous 5: 35am , I did not say what you are saying I said , did I ?
But if you seen the bicycle of the victim , it could probably tell you a lot .
5:35 Stupid is as stupid was and STUPID always shall be. No sense of direction/location.
If you knew where Hirst road is in relation to the direction of the car, you would not have made that remark.
I wonder if the people that trolled my above comment are the kind of people that would knock you down and kill you and run ? Or is it that I didn’t say anything about the victim ? Can someone please explain, but I think that is the first question .
I would imagine it’s the unlikely scenario you presented due to the direction of the cars and where the crashes occurred, nothing personal. Better explained by an earlier poster, but one car was travelling into town, the other out, for them to be the same car they would have had to have had to kill the cyclist, travel out to Bodden, turn around, and come back to crash into the truck. BTW condolences to everyone related to and knowing the victim.
Oh my!! not again.
Such a needless tragedy. People exercise early before it gets hot. With all health related problems this island is not pedestrian and bike friendly. And people are not kind at all. Just think how someone almost run over Derek Haines. She had no shame forcing him off a road shoulder. That woman should be found a prosecuted for aggressive behaviour.
Government vehicle? There we go.
So sad the recurring stories! How many have to die on our roads before we maintain them so that they can be used responsibly and safely by all? Cycle lanes, when they are available on select roads are used as an extra lane by passenger vehicles! I know of a number of senior government employees who take their chances on the road yet maintenance and repairs are done willy nilly. Our roads remind me of that haunting soul song a long time ago by Clarence Carter. “Patches” we are so poor we can’t get an ‘A’ class road on this island. Sorry guys and dolls with your expensive carbon fibre bikes, your lives ain’t worth a dime on this rock with the road madness. Watch out, attach a camera and pray. On a better note would any MLA move a motion to establish a fund for cycle lanes so that all can enjoy, including people who drive but treat cyclists like green iguanas.
Same for runners/walkers. Not everyone uses the walking tracks as the scenery on south sound is so beautiful yet a bit dangerous with the cars speeding along and negligent.
Rest in peace Tony.
Wow. One of my brothers really good friends. RIP. I hope the RCIPS doesn’t ignore this and let whoever did this to him get away!
CaymanKind, lick you down, kill you, and run away. What a people! Lord help us. Just last year, I lost a good friend this very same way.
Condolences to the family.
What an absolute lunatic. How on earth do you know it wasn’t someone from YOUR country, a**hole? What on earth are we doing with this class of idiot in this country, Cayman?
By the looks of the thumbs it seems there is a whole load of this class of idiot in this country.
Are you sure its a caymanian who did this terrible thing? We have all nationalities living on this beautiful island. Any person doing that to another human being, does not have any humanity or feelings.
so true and usually they do it on the way to church, where they pretend with the rest of the congregation that they are good christians.
Man some mothers bring some truly sick children into this world.
You always have to come on with your rubbish about Caymankind.it is very sad but please remember this stuff happens all over the world and not just Cayman. The entire world has these stupid irresponsible idiots and if you come from any place except under a rock you should know this. . You are callous and hateful all the time and I wonder what happened to you to make you like that. Condolences to the family, I hope the driver’s conscience will not allow him to rest until he turns himself in
We have a serious issue with negligent and criminal drivers.
Hit and run should get a mandatory sentence of ten years where injury results AND life if death is caused.
There is no justification for hit and run. It is an admission of guilt.
It is an admission of chicken shitness.
Please don’t insult the chickens.
