RCIPS helicopter

(CNS): A 19-year-old boy from Bodden Town who police say was riding an unlicensed dirt-bike on the roads Friday was arrested and bailed after he was chased by police. The teenage rider was netted with the help of the RCIPS helicopter after police officers on the ground lost sight of him. The young man was first spotted by officers who were monitoring traffic in Bodden Town when he sped past them at excessive speed.

Police went after the bike with sirens blaring and blue lights flashing but the teenager failed to stop and instead increased his speed in order to evade the chasing police officers. Other police units and the RCIPS chopper were also deployed in the pursuit.

After police on the ground lost sight of him, the police helicopter tracked him to an address in Bodden Town, where he was arrested for dangerous driving and speeding, as well as for driving the bike without insurance, registration or a certificate of roadworthiness.

hello. I am a biker and have many biker friends. The bottom line is that. Illegal vehicles and operators should be dealt with accordingly. Unfortunately we all get the bad rep. One thing I have not read in the comments yet is the vindictive and grudgeful drivers. Who try to sabotage riders on the road by cutting them off or “jamming” on brakes for no apparent reason. I don’t care for anyone to confirm or deny this as I have witnessed it first hand and destroyed a gentlemans side mirror and lower jaw for doing so to me. He humbly admited his wrong doing after explaining that his wife is fearful to drive because of the reckless riders. There are those who ride carelessly doing wheelies and disregarding traffic laws therein but a few bad apples doesn’t stop you from using your iPhone. Does it? Peace and bacon grease.

Is intentionally destroying someone’s mirror and lower jaw a proportionate response to someone being startled and intuitively tapping their brakes?!? You should be in jail.

Just two weeks ago I was driving by BT primary school and there was a dirt bike in front of me with no license plate no nothing. A police car was coming the other way and took a real good look at the bike as we went over the speed dump. They didn’t even bother to flash their lights or turn around, they just carried on as if nothing happened…

The noise and danger are really tough. I fear for the riders’ safety abut also that of pedestrians and motorists. The reality is you cannot stamp out people’s desire to ride or drive fast – in the correct setting (eg an F1 or Sebring track) its fascinating and many people have made lucrative careers from channeling this correctly. If we had a track where people could ride legally that would not risk other people’s safety and right to peace then it could potentially be a great thing. I see commenters on here referring to them as hooligans and such. They are dangerous and breaking the law but if given a proper track with enforcement from RCIPS preventing them from being on the roads I think the problem would be better addressed than just trying to make them go away, they’ll just pop up somewhere else because they want to ride. Riding in and of itself is not bad, they just ought to be doing it somewhere designed for it. Put that in place and watch them disappear from our roads. Before you knock my idea, reality is what we are doing now isn’t helping.

They should ban all motor vehicles and only allow horse driven carriages. That will solve this issue.

    • Anonymous says:

Good idea 1.08, except of course you will then have the people who love animals more than people brigade out protesting cruelty to horses in this heat. Lets make it camels drawn carriages. They were built for it.

Caymanian Heritage dictates that donkeys be used, not just for transport, but apparently our politicians as well.

There are whole packs of these unmuffled losers popping wheelies in traffic all the way up Esterley Tibbetts to West Bay – weaving around cars with children with regular impunity. Sooner or later one of these morons will make an error, wipe out, and get squashed and/or cause a major multi-vehicle catastrophe. The police should be out there in force apprehending and punishing all of these bums (and confiscating their equipment) before they kill themselves or someone else. It’s not just that these idiots don’t have a license or proper registration – it’s that they are doing extremely aggressive and dangerous stunts on public roads, tempting fate and endangering others – and they don’t seem to have the sense to wait for a clear road. These are road fatalities waiting to happen. Their behavior is a reliable indicator of criminal proclivity. If the whole point of the Police is to protect life and catch criminals, this should be a regular priority.

Why is there not a charge for evading police as well?

  7. Anonymous says:

Oh right blame the bikers, because CAR drivers never do anything wrong, right?????

  8. Anonymous says:

RCIP stopped these same bikers from riding their bikes off-road. Are you really surprised they chose to ride on the streets?

  9. Anonymous says:

Yes, 19 is hardly a “boy”, but so many motorcyclists riding high powered bikes behave just like little boys, racing at 70mph in built up areas (eg Walkers Rd), revving their engines at traffic lights, overtaking at excessive speed in heavy traffic etc. Unfortunately the police announcement that traffic offences are not a priority will only encourage them in this type of infantile behaviour.

  10. WayaSay says:

Glad they caught one of these bike riders, however, how is it a poor use of resourves to use cars and the traffic department but a good use of resources to use a helicopter to chsse these punks Baines?

    • Anonymous says:

The Traffic Department was disbanded last year if not the year before so fat chance of using anything other than the helicopter in such situations.

One of them almost hit me in standstill traffic (both directions) on a Friday night about 2 months ago. A group of them was speeding down the middle of the road between traffic and one of them had to lay it down to stop from hitting my car. Front wheel of the bike went under my car. He pulled it out and tried to start it to get away. I actually had to straddle the bike to stop him from leaving the scene with no help from the security guard at Casanova’s (was right in front of the restaurant) or any other of the many bystanders watching. And nobody would call the police.
I’m surprised a video didn’t make it to the public with so many people standing around watching.

  12. Mary says:

I live in Tropical Gardens and there was a young man doing the same thing up and down the road just yesterday evening … and if it wasn’t bad enough that he was doing wheelies and racing up and down the road he was wearing shorts, no t-shirt and no helmet. If he had an accident he could have been badly hurt.

    • Anonymous says:

Ah yes. We have seen him and his little lookout buddy on the bicycle the last few days actually. Don’t worry though, we can see them but they can’t see the fishing line.

      • Anonymous says:

Don’t complain to the RCIP when you find your car windows broken from retaliation then, smart guy.

      • Anonymous says:

Then you will want to complain to the RCIP after retaliation?

      • Anonymous says:

oh yes, seriously injuring him is the correct plan of action.. >_>

        • Anonymous says:

The safety of our law abiding children is of far more significance than that of some punk gangster wannabe who is just getting started out in his choice of careers. So it go.

        • Diogenes says:

As opposed to him killing himself falling off his bike, you mean, or running over some innocent? But you are right – no one wants the boy hurt, just to stop his reckless and dangerous behaviour. Which is why the police should arrest him, ban him and confiscate the damn bike.

      • ConcernedTGresident says:

and you will be the first to call RCIP if something happens to your vehicle after though, right.

      • Anonymous says:

That’ll surely lead to decapitation. I didn’t realize cns allowed citizens contemplating murder to freely post their intentions. You clearly need help if this issue drives you to want to murder some kid on a bike.

They are not hurting anyone and not riding on the main road. Leave these kids alone

  13. Isaac says:

    Finally!!!!!
Now they need to put some effort in getting these other noisy bikes off the road especially if they are not legal.

  14. Anonymous says:

These motor bike riders are out of control. But this is what happens when there is no police presence. East end on the weekends is free for all to break the laws.

  15. Anonymous says:

I saw police in a car, with the helicopter overhead, chasing a group of illegal bike riders in Savannah last weekend. I guess they all got away?

  16. Anonymous says:

    19yr old boy???

  17. Kenny says:

Thank godness civil servants didn’t listen to the negative CNS posters and sell the copter

    • Anonymous says:

Um, wasn’t it the politicians who wanted rid? And I certainly don’t the civil service can claim the copter was kept because of anything they did.

This CNS poster certainly fully supports it. Its an essential resource so far as I can see.

  18. BT resident says:

Congrats RCIPS, I hope the bike was seized by police, these unlicensed bikes are a nucience, and an annoying menace to traffic.

  19. Anonymous says:

Well done RCIP. These dirt bike riders are taking over the streets. Please come to the West Bay by-pass and you will catch 5 – 10 of these wheeling idiots any day.

  20. Anonymous says:

Well done police! That is what we are asking for and deserve. Please stamp out all illegal activity and get us back to where we were only 20 years ago.

    • Anonymous says:

I can tell you what you were doing 20 years ago, making babies, like this and the rest that were conceived around that time and are destroying the society, anyone can make a baby, only a few can call themselves parents. look at what you have done with you Cayman..

  21. Anonymous says:

    Would you like a trophy

  22. Anonymous says:

I am a Bodden Towner. Thank you RCIPS, there is a lot of this going on up and down side roads in the district, including one where we don’t report it because there is a Caymanian policeman living here and if he doesn’t think anything is wrong, not much point reporting it is there?

  23. I. M. Mature says:

19 year old boy? What is that?

  24. Anonymous says:

There are about a half dozen of these illegal dirt bike riders in Boatswain Bay (aka Rollins Road) which makes night time sound like a NASCAR racing track. Hopefully the police helicopter will track them in West Bay and take these annoying and dangerous bikes off the road.
