Tara Rivers, Minister of Education, Employment and Gender Affairs, in the LA

(CNS): Following the recent publication of both the draft labour bill and extensive amendments to the pensions law, the employment minister and her ministry team are hitting the road next week to begin the task of presenting the proposed new legislation to the public. Starting with the Labour Law, which is a complete overhaul of the legislation, Tara Rivers will be on her home turf of West Bay on Tuesday to begin promoting and explaining her proposed changes and to take on board the comments of the people.

Everyone is urged to attend the meetings to submit their comments on the bill before the final draft is completed and taken to parliament. The public will also be able to ask questions about the proposed laws, which will impact both employers and employees.

Rivers has said the many changes in the legislation will not only create a fair and more equitable working environment but should also help local people in what has become a particularly difficult job market.

Labour and Pensions laws district meetings schedule

The only district with back to back meetings for both bills will be on Cayman Brac on Saturday 18 July.

All members of the public are invited to attend these meetings and be a part of this public consultation process.

In general, Cayman does not need new laws and bills.

Cayman needs enforcement of the existing laws.

Unless the new law addresses the piss poor work that is done by labour officers, a new law will mean NOTHING. The labour officers are pathetic when it comes to enforcing the law in its current form so nothing will change with a new law. What Tara needs to do is to revamp and change how things are done in the labour office, ensure confidentiality and have staff refrain from talking about labour matters when they are getting drunk in bars. When this is done then maybe a law can be given consideration.

CNS, are you sure the ministry told you road show and not dog and pony show?

As far as i’m concerned I want to retire early enough to enjoy my pension while i’m still young enough to go to Vegas (at 55 or 60 max)……. 65 is too far gone for me to be slaving around someone’s backyard waiting for a pension to kick in….I might kick out before it kick in for sure.

I think that might just be the plan……. increase the age so that expats get to keep their jobs and locals die off due to cost of living, no job and no pension, because probably no pension to collect

They are going to explain how the managers they have cant do a case in 6mths so they will make you wait for 2 years for your wages just to make it go statue barred. If they cant do it in 6 mths while people lose houses they certainly wont get it done before it forecloses in 2 years. These are changes that are not in the peoples favour maam. make your officers do their work or get someone who can.

Would go but the crime is another issue…

When is this expected to become law? Or will this all be talk, talk, talk with no action?

Exactly! When will the legal practitioners law be addressed? When will the Truman Bodden Law School be addressed?

You must be easily impressed. Yawn…

They can go on all the road shows they want but if they can’t reduce the number of work permits allowed so that Caymanians can stand a chance at getting jobs then you your road shows and laws are nothing but smoke and mirrors!

    • Anonymous says:

They cannot affect work permits in any way because it is the Premier, not them, in charge of that disaster called Immigration.

I must say I have become impressed with Minister Rivers and Councilor Connolly lately. There seems to be a lot of positive activity in their ministry.

I wish the govt website would allow me to read what the proposed bullsh*t will be but once again the IT dept has failed on making the attachment public at least not with my computers
I am sure the changes will do nothing but destroy cayman some more Its hard enough to have a business in cayman and now I am sure I will be forced to hire more lazy texters that are too lazy to do a simple task I recently hired one that the first thing she did was smoke a cigarette then openly on her desk she had her rolling papers for all to see and to make even worse on her second day she did not show up, no call nothing she asked me why I did not call her or come pick her up Just another POS
