(CNS): Following earlier warnings of flooding on Cayman Brac, government officials said the Red Cross Shelter in George Town had opened Friday night as torrential rain pounded down on Grand Cayman as well. Residents in the capital and across the island were knee-deep in flood waters when officials began issuing formal alerts regarding the shelters.Heavy rain from the weather system affecting the Cayman Islands since Tuesday (2 June) resulted in flooding in a number of areas across the island on Friday evening, with reports of flooded homes and roads in George Town and in West Bay. The shelter at the Red Cross Building on Huldah Avenue will remain open until further notice to assist people who need accommodation due to flood waters. Some of the areas affected include Anthony Drive, Washington Boulevard, Smith Road in George Town and parts of West Bay.

The Cayman Islands National Weather Service forecasts calls for weather conditions to remain unsettled throughout the weekend. Motorists should exercise caution when driving and avoid flooded roads if possible. Call 911 in emergency situations only.
