MLA steering towards public transport plan
(CNS): Joey Hew has revealed that he is working on a national public transport plan to drive people on to buses and off the increasingly congested roads. The backbench government MLA said that Cayman cannot keep building roads to accommodate the growing traffic congestion.
Speaking in the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday, Hew, who is a counsellor in the tourism and transport ministry, said he had been working on a review of public transport and had already expanded bus routes. Read more on CNS Business

The mini-bus system isn’t too bad in theory but it needs to be regulated. We need a licensing regime so the drivers and the buses all meet a minimum standard of suitability and there has to be designated places where they can pick up and drop off passengers without causing chaos.
I dare Mr Councilor Joey Hew to implement the Bermuda Model that would mean taking a whole lot of bad drivers and some of his rich friends off our roads. The only exemption would be need for tourist who rent vehicles. He well knows only those who can’t afford it ride the bus!
Maaan, mi nehvva riskin mi life inna one a dem Mad Max busis!
Cudos to Joey! I hope he succeeds. But it seems to me that it needs a complete overhaul and new thinking. It’s really not rocket science – many, many countries have done it before. But I hope we will not import those huge, smoke belching buses.
When we already have dozens of little smoke belching minibuses??
I am very please to see the government trying to form some kind of proper transportation system on the island. Being a member of the police service this will sure assist us in our fight against drink driving and help reduce the number of road fatalities we experience each year. one of the major contributor to finances of government is the selling of alcohol which attributes to the number of bars on the island. Since the government place such grave importance on taxes come from alcohol purchases, I believe it incumbent on the islands government to provide a second option for individuals when they go out and drink. I congratulate Mr Hew on his attempt thus far. my only regret is that it took this island so long a many lives before we actually see the for proper transportation system.
Perfect example of our police force literacy levels, who are charged with the safety and control of our country…..
I am sure if you read it in the appropriate accent it will sound better.
Joey Who?
I have always thought that a tram up and down West bay Road from Captain’s Bakery up to Public Beach would be a great tourist attraction and provide safe transport up and down the road…..There is perhaps room for two way traffic and a tram?
Before people stop driving in the comfort and safety of their cars, these bus drivers need lesson on proper driving etiquette and safety.
Government HAS to step in and finally put a proper transport system in place. Take it out of the hands of the money grabbing, street racers that now bring nothing but shame to it.
IF I could take a proper bus, that is dependable and SAFE, I would and leave my car at home. But to hell if I will as long as this “one stop driver” mentality runs it…I will drive. I have reported the same bus drivers over and over and over and OVER to the Public Transport Unit for the poor and unsafe driving practises. But, these people are still behind the wheel doing the same things.
If we are aiming on being taken seriously, we have to start acting serious. This mini-bus system that is currently in place is nothing more than a disgrace. The drivers have no care or concern for their passengers or the laws of this country. All they are concerned about is grabbing every dollar they can get.
Proper public transportation is needed with GOVERNMENT properly regulating the bus system period. Proper buses that run on propane, that are driven by properly trained individuals!!!!
Why are we going to wait for one of these mini bus drivers to kill a load of people?!! I agree with Mr. Hew on this.
This style that we are imitating so well is poor and pathetic.
As long as we subscribe to the crazy cowboy minibus model only the desperate and car-less will use it. Heck, even Cayman Airways is run like a minibus service with diversions of the half empty 737 to Cayman Brac to drop off folks while enroute to Jamaica.
Good luck Mr. Hew, but any progress will be glacial due to the unwarranted and outsized influence of a minor business sector.
