Engine arrives for stranded cargo plane
(CNS): The DHL plane which has been stuck on the tarmac at the airport for the last three weeks is expected to leave in the next few days now that a new engine has arrived on a Russian made Ilyushin IL 76 freighter plane. The cargo plane was stranded after it was forced to make an emergency landing at Owen Roberts International Airport on 18 February as a result of the troubled engine.
The DHL Boeing 757 aircraft, which was carrying flammable material, was on its way to Costa Rica from Miami when it made an emergency landing on Grand Cayman on just one engine.
The IL-76 that brought the new engine spent about two hours at ORIA on Monday as the replacement engine was unloaded and the defective engine was loaded back onto the freighter plane.
“A crew of technicians were flown in specifically to remove the defective engine and install the replacement,” an airport spokespersons stated. “The DHL cargo plane is expected to leave Cayman after the successful installation and testing of the replacement engine is completed. This process should take a few days to complete.”

A very ironical situation here. I was in Moscow in early 1992 and there was a long row of Aeroflot Il-76s parked up there with no engines. Apparently the airline’s maintenance program had run out of money. How times change?
Don’t let the Russians in! They’ll never leave!
