$1M fleet of garbage trucks to hit the road

(CNS): Rubbish collection across Grand Cayman should improve significantly from Friday when the fleet of five new garbage trucks takes to the road. Government has spent over one million dollars on three Mack Commercial Waste Collection and two Freightliner residential garbage trucks.
The trucks were handed over to the Department of Environmental Health Wednesday after the Department of Vehicle and Equipment services (DVES) purchased the trucks via the Central Tender Committee (CTC).
The arrival of the trucks represents the first half of a full fleet of ten, with the remaining trucks expected later this month. The next delivery will include three roll on/roll off trucks for commercial waste, one Grapple truck for both residential and commercial waste, as well as one more Mack Freightliner.
With the arrival of the new trucks, officials said, all commercial customers with front loading containers will be on normal schedules and residential customers will see their household waste collected earlier on their scheduled days, with the trucks off the roads by early afternoon.
The trucks are part of a concerted effort by government to tackle the day to day issue of waste-management as it continues on the long haul towards a national strategic plan for the future, which will see the country move toward reuse and recycling instead of dumping most of its garbage in a landfill. The appalling state of the George Town dump is also expected to be addressed through reclamation and remediation, which may include a waste-to-energy component.

ha ha haaa lord a mercy 9 people for pic with 4 garbage trucks. Tailk about want-a-be’s looking attention. Everybody wants to be somebody and no one is paying them any mind. just put the trucks on the road and get the garbage. with all of these liming up should have plenty people to jump on the back oh those trucks
Jus hope we can get back to 2 residential pickups per week. When the trucks don’t come, I don’t see govt holding back on the 2-3% import duty hike.
Ah boy……….and they think this new fleet will sort out the dump problem? And they’re always shouting and bragging from every media house and radio station how educated they are??
No recycling, no dump deal but we got $1M in a new fleet; meanwhile the stench kills yah and the mountain grows taller? Where’s common sense? Hope they take better care of them than the Police did with theirs? Took a good look @ their “new” fleet lately? Dents, dings, scratches and always DIRTY!! That’s what happens when you don’t teach that it is their money too!! Sad
Just what we need, more trucks to dump more Garbage on top of Mr Trashmore..
Seems like the residential side of things are less important, AGAIN, so residents need to start dumping their garbage in commercial containers. I’ve suggested a long time ago to put the commercial containers around the areas and let people just dump into them. It’d be a lot easier and less messy solution, rather than having garbage sitting out in the open and getting torn apart and scattered all over the island.
It is really past time for the Government to exit the commercial waste business. There are private sector companies that are already doing this and more would take up the opportunity. Immediate reduction in expenditure (capital & recurrent). Stick to household waste collection.
Focus on pushing & assisting the ongoing project to develop a viable waste processing solution. The sooner we can get there the better.

The present Government is too stupid to do just that. Out of jealousy they refuse to accept Mr. Dart’s proposal for a modern Waste Management Facility, which is still on the books, they just have to swallow their pride and talk to Mr. Dart
Darts proposal was not a modern waste management proposal. they simply were digging two out of the six pits which would be lined and Government would have to do the rest! There was no waste to energy, recycling or plan to operate the facility, that doesn’t sound too modern to me! Considering everything Dart got in the NRA deal including our Hotel Tax I would think they could have done more!

That would happen only if it was managed by the CIG and they just dump unprocessed garbage in a pile like they do in GT..
I think you should check your facts regarding the “proposal for a modern Waste Management Facility”. A piece of land and a few holes (2 lined) does not make such a facility. Everything else was for you & I to pay for. Plus covering the existing dump and adding a few drainage wells does not seem to help either. Surely we can do better than that.
We should be aiming for ZERO waste going into any landfill. Plus attempting to remove as much of the existing pile as possible and also process that waste through the solutions determined.

Yes, we need to sort out the dump issue foremost. Lovely that our island is visited by tourists who can smell the pile all up and down SMB. And further, when they pick up the garbage how about not throwing trash cans all over roads and parking lots? I would get fired if I was a housekeeper and I just threw the trash can on the floor after I emptied it!

The reason why the fleet became so depleted is because the former Minster Julianna O’Connor took a $1M of it that should have gone to buy such units when the 3% was added to duty and used it to build her monstrosity in CYB.
But Alden pardoned her for all her transgressions just so he could get her as a card in his hand.
And being the person she is, she naturally went to the bidder that paid Julie best.
She should have to drive one of these for free and Alden should have to ride on the back and pick up the d___ garbage.

What happened to you old equipment is that the old phillipino men that used to work on the equipment and teach your kids how to fix the equipment were let go ,fired, gotten rid of .
and your kids were unable to do the work that takes a lifetime to learn. Thus your equipment could not be fixed because you didn’t know how to fix it .

Sorry guys!!! but this is not the answer to our waste management problems. Hand the dump over to Dark, then work on changing the culture of the locals. A Proper waste management facility “not dump” and recycling at the home is the name of the game. We can do it now or we can do it ten years down the road when its twice as expensive.
New trucks can only do so much, what about making changes from the top. If the head of the stream is muddy, what can we expect at the end of it.
Sorry Alden new trucks not going to eliminate the potential health problems at the GT landfill.From now on the people of Cayman will be educated of the hazardous elements emanating from the GT landfill. The poisonous gases floating around in the air for days after a fire occurs, while the people walking around breathing it into their bloodstreams. The leachate draining into our ground water.Time to stop your lies Alden you killing your people slowly!

Now if we could just find drivers who can actually drive those trucks properly and don’t confuse them with a race car!
Can we make sure that the drivers of these trucks drive them as if they paid for them?!!
Many times these trucks are parked at dves having their engine worked on. These new trucks are expensive and should be properly operated.
So true.. but not only driven properly but also CLEANED every day too
They should be maintained properly. Its not about filling the equipment with fuel only.

That depends on Roydell Carter, the manager, to make sure those trucks are kept in tip top condition, but we will see, so far he hasn’t demonstrated that type of professionalism. Poor management has got the Landfill and the equipments in a disastrous state.
