Health heroes on show at library exhibition

(CNS): Following the celebrations on National Heroes Day this week, when pioneers, veterans and current members of the health profession were honoured, the library is hosting an exhibition of photographs and artefacts that tell the story of the development of health services in the Cayman Islands. On Monday 114 professionals, including doctors, nurses, midwives, dentists, pharmacists, lab technicians, emergency response service workers, medical assistants, counsellors, environmental health workers and therapists, received recognition for outstanding contributions made over the course of the islands’ history.

Governor Helen Kilpatrick and elected members of government lauded awardees’ significant contributions to health and wellness, including the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, as well as the promotion, maintenance and restoration of human health.

People were honoured as early pioneers and for long service and family members accepted posthumous honours

Premier Alden McLaughlin, who is now also the minister of health and who comes from a family of healthcare workers, thanked all those who had fostered the evolution of health services in the Cayman Islands over the years, and paid tribute to those men and women who have dedicated, and still do dedicate, their lives to the health of the Cayman Islands.

“I was brought up to appreciate the advantages of a healthy lifestyle, as well as to respect those who help us to get healthy and work with us to maintain our wellbeing,” he said.

The public can now see the Heroes Day Exhibition at the George Town Library until Friday 6 February, from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm.
