Man killed in West Bay Road crash
(CNS): A 21-year-old man from George Town has become the thirteenth person to lose his life on Cayman’s roads this year after a major single vehicle crash this morning on the West Bay Road. Police said the smash happened at 2:14 on Saturday morning (21 November) by the Galleria Plaza. Emergency services were alerted and found Lanado Martin Waugh trapped inside a silver Honda Accord.
The victim appeared unconscious and was not breathing, police said. He received medical assistance and was taken to the George Town hospital, where he was pronounced dead by the doctor on duty.
Waugh was understood to be travelling towards George Town on the West Bay Road when he crashed.
The young man’s death comes just one week after two men from the United States were killed on Cayman Brac, also in a single vehicle collision, and in a year that has seen one of the highest number of deaths on the road in the Cayman Islands since records began.
The police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the collision or seen the car before it crashed to contact the investigating officer, PC Orville Harris at the George Town Police Station at 949-4222. Witnesses can also contact the RCIPS tip line at 949-7777 or Crime Stoppers at 800-8477 (TIPS).
The road was still blocked at 9am Saturday morning and traffic was asked to use alternative routes.

RIP young man. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.
Our roads have become lawless. People drive however they want to with no consequences to them until it is too late.
Speed limit or not, this won’t help. Where I would love to blame government, this time we can’t. It is the person who is driving the car who speeds. With all the so called cctv’s why doesn’t government put in cameras that can clock speeders and takes pictures of their plates, they have this in the states. Send them summons, get them where it hurts before they hurt themselves!
Once again this is a good idea but impossible to implement. Did you see the recent article on 700 outstanding warrants, these would just be added to the pile.
Generally people take the speed limit as a guide.
If the limit is 100 mph most people will drive close to that. Even if it is not safe.
Change the limit to 30 mph on the same road and very few will drive at close to 100 mph.
So many of these accidents happen in the wee hours of the morning when most sensible people are in bed.
I don’t know if this accident was a result of speeding, but it it was, something tells me that even if government set the new speed limit to 80mph, we’d still have people doing 90mph and higher.
Please Please PLEASE, young people, we NEED you. As a country, as a society, as a people, we need every one of you. We cannot afford to lose even one more of you.
Please Don’t speed and don’t drink and drive.
Unfortunately, all you have to do is keep your car between the lines, travel at or below the speed limit, and avoid running in to other cars. Is that too much to ask??
There will be a lot of sad people today. I didn’t know you, but rest in peace.
My condolences to the family and friends of this young man.
Hey, they are likely killing people in even larger numbers by not enforcing the health insurance law, why should a silly little thing like road signage cause them any concern.
Speed limits are recommended limits of speed , they do not control how fast people drive that’s a personal responsibility some of the worst crashes on the island have happened in 25 mph zones , that’s the slowest except the 15 mph in the school zones during school hours , sorry i almost forgot speed limits are law as well , but until the penalty is the same as dui or dwi not much will change.
Speed limits, road signs, educational campaign, all mean nothing if persons won’t stop drinking and driving. So sad.
What the hell are you talking abiut ? There is nothing in the story about speeding, drinking, or driving violations by this person..so why do you refer to them? Maybe he was working late and fell asleep. Maybe he swerved to avoid a pedestrian. Maybe he was cut off by one of our many useless cab drivers
Why don’t you let this poor person and his family have the benefit of the doubt until there are actual facts released about the cause of the accident? You are Heartless.
Where are the new speed limits we have been promised time and time again on this road! Government how does it feel knowing that your dragging your feet on this may have cost a life? How much longer are you going to delay? How many more have too lose their life before you act?
Judging by the way this car looked no speed limit would have saved this man he was driving well beyond 40mph!!
Speed limit change will not save lives. Taking your right foot off the throttle will save lives.. most notably your own & then other road users . Just slow down … we live on an island 25 miles long. Condolences to the family & friends of this young man involved in the accident.
My friend, speed limit has nothing to do with it. Speed limit only tells you how fast you are allowed to go, it does not control the speed (throtle) of the car. If an individual wishes to speed then the speed limit does not mean anything to him or her. Government is in now way to blame for this tragedy that happened this morning or any other due to speed limits. My condolences go out to the families.
If people followed road rules, do you think this or most other accidents would even happen? Changing speed limits wont prevent people from doing high speeds. All it will do is annoy and slow down those who obey the limit.
Also, some studies and statistics have shown that raising speed limits can reduce road crashes. There is a ruled called the 85th percentile rule, that suggests speed limits be set at the speed that 85% of drivers will drive at. It assumes that 15% or drivers drive dangerously.
How dare you blame the government for this. Not because the speed limit is a certain number means that you have to do that speed or higher !! How about taking responsibility for your own life. These kids are driving like crazy and some of them can hardly keep a car in the correct lane. There is hardly any space to speed on west bay road any way. Talk to your kids and grand kids and warn them about the dangers of speeding.
Speed kills. Speed limits are reminders, who takes note?
so the “new speed limits” would control someone’s choice to press more or less on the gas pedal?
I doubt a new speed limit would stop someone if they wanted to speed. Besides, the investigation is still ongoing. The article doesn’t mention speed, liquor or anything. Stop assuming and blaming. RIP young man.
