Officials confirm next year’s public holidays
(CNS): 2016 will kick-off with a long holiday weekend as New Year’s Day falls on a Friday. The list of eleven official public holidays for 2016 was released by government on Monday, with just the Queen’s official birthday holiday remaining to be confirmed, though it is expected to be on Monday 13 June. As Christmas Day falls on a Sunday in 2016, Monday 26 and Tuesday 27 December will be observed as the official Christmas Day and Boxing Day holidays.
This also means that New Year’s Eve for 2017 will fall on a Saturday and celebrations for welcoming in that year will once again clash with the current legal restrictions on the combination of dancing and drinking after midnight on Sunday mornings.
Government has plans to review the liquor licensing law but it is not clear if it will be addressing the current restrictions that see all bars and clubs close on Saturday at midnight.
