Drug dogs and gun seizures at local school
(CNS Video): John Gray High School is dealing with yet another incident involving an imitation firearm after security guards seized a toy gun from students traveling on a school bus from West Bay last week. The recovery of what was said to be close replica of a weapon is the second in just two weeks. Meanwhile, the school has deployed sniffer dogs to deal with ongoing drug issues.
Trained drug dogs are now being used at the school as part of a strategy to try and combat dealing on the campus. Christen Suckoo, the acting chief officer of the education ministry, told CNS reporter Kenneth Bryan that there are some students selling drugs at the school and they are using the dogs to root out the contraband and also as part of a programme to raise awareness and educate students about drug misuse.
The ongoing problems at JGHS that are raising concerns for parents and the wider community come just as the ministry is preparing to launch a public consultation period for a new education law. Officials will be holding a televised press briefing Thursday to unveil the new legislation.
Check back to CNS tomorrow for full details on the new law.

Maybe I am shallow and have no sense to understand this article. Will someone help me to understand from the reading. Did the student used the toy gun to threaten the crew and other students on the bus? or was he travelling to school with his toy in his bag to play cowboy and indian with his cousins after school?
Some of the students at john gray really need to stay focus on they’re education in able to succeed in life. Why can’t these students act more like the high school students on cayman brac?.
Far as I know most of them are well behaved and respectful and more focused on they’re school work than the students here on grand cayman that’s why they will be successful in life and look at the amount of big businesses here that is own by brackers from kirks supermarket to fosters food fair the lists goes on.
Maybe if people here would have the same smart thinking as the brackers then this place wouldn’t be in this type of mess that its in right now.
Unless Government and police are prepared to hold the parents of minors responsible for their children’s action or inaction, nothing will change.
The generation has changed. Kids back in the early 90’s might have been tough or full of trouble, but they were respectful. Now there is a huge disrespect- for their parents, for their teachers, for police, for authority in general.
My kids go to john gray high school and to the best of my knowledge they are bad apples in that school and they are parents that don’t care less and they are some teachers that don’t like the students and that’s not a good combination the place must go to hell !!! Excuse my out burst but things have changed from what I experienced back in 1989 . Two different worlds ……very sad for our good apples that are following instead of leading and not getting the education they need.
To SSM345: The schools you attend must have some lousy security, but then again, the school where I taught for 23 years had 15 or so security guards and 3 city police officers stationed there each day- that may be the difference why the fights were broken up quickly. Maybe more security/police would be the answer?
If you have a gun held to your head, are you going to be asking if it is a toy or the real thing? A toy gun (some look quite real) when pointed at someone can cause someone to have a heart attack, a bus driver to drive off the road in a panic or a police officer to shoot. Parents should think twice before allowing the purchase of a toy gun for their child.
Why is it always only John Gray mentioned. The drug dog goes to both Clifton and John Gray. Clifton is better at hiding their dirt, they have students dealing drugs there as well.
Hiding the problems within the schools is not only JGHS, they ALL hide the realities. Private schools too.
What a beautiful school!
From that report there seems to be alot of problems. Is it legal for the dogs to go inside for drug sniffing? If so, send them in. Re: the issues on the bus- have security, police and the drug dogs meet the bus for surprise inspections. When you do this once or twice they will stop bring weapons to school on the bus. Do you have wands? Wand the kids down before entering a day or two. You may not find much as kids will text each other to let others know that this is going on, but do not let this stop you from doing this.
Students usually fight on school property as they know if they fight in school the fight will be broken up, but they do not “lose face” . If they fight in the streets, they do not know if anyone will come to their aid.
The worst fights I have ever seen in my life happened at our local middle/high school, and I have seen professional MMA live since then.
Once a “ring” forms around the fight by everyone who has rushed to witness it, no one can get in to break it up until its over.
…and what makes you think these surprise inspections don’t take place? They do!
This is what happens when you ignore problems and throw money at them for decades.
Compulsory parenting classes for all parents, compulsory drug education for parents and students would go some way to helping jghs do the impossible.
Are any of the students expatriates? If so can we solve some of the problem immediately. I am getting sick of us spending time and money rehabilitating some foreign nationals who are breaching the trust we have placed in them and bringing down others. Our kids are our problem and we have to deal with them (including more harshly), but the reality is some of the problem is not from our kids. Immigration, where are you?
You are a complete donkey. Since when can expats attend public schools in Cayman? That’s what I thought, never.
Not never. You have however touched on one of the key points as to why the public schools have gone so far down the sewers in recent years.
There are hundreds of expats in Government schools.
Are you suggesting we deport troublesome students back to our close neighboring country, the republic of West Bay ?
Expat kids can’t go to public schools with the exception of kids of government workers. So excluding the small amount of them they are local.Suprise! Suprise!
small amount? where you from? check out new recruits this school year alone, in the Education Department, HSA, Police they all send their kids to JGHS and CHHS, heard of one civil servant who came with 4 kids last year. My dear Caymanians not the ones breeding…
If they are expats on work permits their kids would not be at this school as they are required to put their kids in private school. Chances are they are Caymanian – whether born or by status is irrelevant in the eyes of the law. What is your solution now?
Status is temporary until 18.
Let us get something straight here. Is it a real gun or a toy gun? The headline is very deceiving if it is a toy gun and should read ‘Drug dogs and TOY gun seizures at local school’.. I am tired of the bad news on these islands. Please do not paint anymore. Is it now a crime to have a toy gun?
If you use a toy gun in the commission of a crime, then yes, it is illegal.
If you use a toy gun to intimidate or threaten a person and they think its real, then you have committed a crime.
Need anymore examples?
I agree the heading is misleading. It is illegal to have an imitation firearm IF it is being used to commit a crime.
Crime if you’re a Caymanian, if he has at least one Jacan parent, him aright
No its not a crime to have a toy gun but many crimes have been committed using toy guns idiot
