(CNS): An attempted theft of a phone from an employee at Crescent Point Resort on Seven Mile Beach was foiled when the woman chased down the thief and helped police net the West Bay suspect on a local bus. Police said that the 911 centre received the theft report from the woman at 4:15pm on Monday as she was in pursuit of the culprit. The victim said the man had taken her phone from a table and ran off but she chased him and he dropped it. Having retrieved her phone, the woman nevertheless continued her pursuit, and when he boarded a bus, she got in a car and followed, earning praise from the police.

The RCIPS said the suspect had boarded the public bus near 7 Mile Shops after he discarded the phone he had tried to steal. But when a passerby offered the woman a ride, they both set off to follow the bus in his car.

“Both the victim and member of the public then tracked the public bus and provided the registration number of the bus to the 911 operator, who coordinated the information between them and police,” the RCIPS stated in a release about the pursuit. “Officers intercepted the public bus in the vicinity of the Westin.”

Police officers then boarded the bus and arrested a 36-year-old man from West Bay on suspicion of burglary. He is currently in police custody.

“Even though she had already retrieved her phone, the victim persevered, in a safe manner, to assist police in apprehending the suspect,” said Superintendent Robert Graham, Head of Uniform Operations. “I’d like to thank the victim and the member of the public for their extraordinary assistance to police, and the 911 Communications Centre for its assistance and coordination.”

Great result! – This is exactly what we should see in Cayman,

People who refuse to be treated as victims (safely) standing up for themselves.

    Passers-by helping those in need.

Good co-ordination between 911 operators and the Police.

and the Police apprehending the suspect (and releasing a timely, supportive press release).

Well done all, and a Happy Christmas!

Guess if she had been able to inflict a lick or any force on him she would’ve ended up in the lock up, like someone I heard defended his property and was arrested. This is the very reason some people are afraid to defend themslves.
